We call it the Smolt. It has an awesomely tuned double-action trigger pull and puts 38 wadcutters in very small groups.

OK, the picture didn't show up

Guess it was too big. :( Anybody have a suggestion to make it work?

Yep, a model 19-3 with a 6 inch Python barrel screwed into it. Sorry the pics didn't make it.

A friends dad used to have a 1917 with a section of finned Thompson barrel screwed onto it. Looked kinda like a big ray gun. He would pull it out on the line at Camp Perry once in a while and handle it, just to try and break the other shooters concentration a little. Don't tell anyone I mentioned his trick though ;-)

55.2; until you can get your pictures posted, I am providing you with pictures of my 6" and 3" Smythons. Your Smolt should look very similar.

Why was this done in the first place? Do Colt Pythons barrels have significantly better accuracy or was it a cosmetic thing?

"supposedly" better asccuracy, but I think the main reason was the full lug barrel...........see these were made before the 686/586 was introduced

It's always fun to get aholt of a Smolt! Sound's like a nice one, definitly pic's are needed!

I still have a couple of Smolts; the 4" built on an older Model 15 and the 6" built on a 66. Alas, I sold the older 27 Smolt. Not smart. Years ago, I was told by the guys at Bill Davis that the Python barrels had a bit tighter bore and faster twist. Combined with a tuned S&W action, you have pure revolver heaven.

Are these still being made?

If so; by whom?

It's funny, I have just returned to the sport after YEARS away... I have always admired the Python but have always ADORED my 19. I have smaller hands and it always just fit perfectly. Still does. 20 years away from the range and after 50 rounds t felt like I had been there last week.

This concept is very intriguing!

Question for Smolt owners. Did the Python forcing cone have to be flattened at the bottom?
