A friend has invited me to try IDPA, never done it before, but I'm really looking forward to it.

My main question, does anyone shoot IDPA with their Shield?

I've seen a few shoot them. Some clubs have a Backup Gun category that the Shield would fit nicely into it. I don't think you would have much problem in the regular SSP category though. (besides, it's all fun anyway, just go and do it ;))

My idea of fun is to "Run-what-ya-brung", some get waaay too serious to enjoy or continue in the sport. IDPA is set for 10rd 9mm or 6rd .38 but that doesn't mean you should go out and get another gun just to shoot with them unless you really want to. If your idea is to increase your skill with what you carry then shoot it and learn.

I am looking forward t it, and will be doing it for fun, to get better and compete against myself to improve.

My next question, I have a .40 Shield, would it be ok to shoot it with the 9mm barrel***, using the .40 magazines in IDPA?

*** This also assumes I can get a 9mm barrel somewhere.

One of the guys I shoot with is a LEO. On the months he shoots his 'off duty' gear it is a shield. He also shoots with the shorty mags, because that is how he carries.

@MattNH
in my FS, I tried the 40 mags, because for a while you could not get SW 9 mags. Total fail.

My main question, does anyone shoot IDPA with their Shield?

Yes, one youngish lady shoots her shield every time in my IDPA matches, and shoots it very well. A couple of guys are still trying to beat her with their full size Glocks.

I sometimes shoot my Kahr P9 in club matches, and leave a few people mumbling to themselves about being beat with a "toy gun."

Ric, I assume FS= full size, but aren't they double stack mags, vs the single stack for the Shield?

I originally bought the Shield in .40, because that's what I could get. Now the same LGS has the 9 Shield available.

Before I invest more in .40 mags and .40 ammo,, I may be better off with a 9 shield.

I did get the NDZ Performance mag bases with the pinky extension and like the feel with the short mag and the base in the Shield. Per IDPA rules, 8+ gets you 2 extra mags or 25 to 31 rounds, 6 or 7 gets you 3 mags or 25 rounds (6 rounders) or 29 rounds (7 rounders)

If I switch to the 9 shield, use the short 7 round magazines with the pinky extension (which feels the best to me) I shoot a string with 29 rounds. Or stick with my .40 and have slightly higher ammo expense and shoot the strings with 25 rounds.

I'm not necessarily concerned with 25 vs 29, but I guess I need to shoot a match or three and decide on my course of action.

By the way, I carry the Shield 40 every day.

Thanks for the input.

I only shoot IDPA when I can't soot something else so my experience is somewhat limited, but I believe IDPA stages are limited to 18 rounds, so two extra 7 or 8 round mags would be plenty...

I believe that IDPA matches are limited to 10 round mags with a stage limit of 30 rounds per stage.

I believe that IDPA matches are limited to 10 round mags with a stage limit of 30 rounds per stage.

The 30 rounds per stage is for the Classifier.

6.10. No string of fire may exceed a maximum requirement of eighteen (18) rounds.
6.10.1. String of Fire: A section of the course of fire that is initiated by a start signal, and ends with the last shot fired. There may be more than one string in a given stage. *

On pistols, the division capacity is +1 in the chamber for the start of the string. The string can start with a lower round count if the COF design calls for it.

8.1.3. Division Capacity
8.1.3.1. SSP – 10 rounds
8.1.3.2. ESP – 10 rounds
8.1.3.3. CDP – 8 rounds
8.1.3.4. SSR – 6 rounds
8.1.3.5. ESR – 6 rounds *

* From the rulebook that went into effect 10/1/2013 but these sections are the same as the previous rulebook.

I shoot my Shield at our IDPA matches. Everyone else shoots FS and asks me what Im shooting.lol. I want as much practice with my soon to be CCW( IL). Have fun.

I am a big believer in shooting what you ACTUALLY carry. ( use what you already have and carry).
On more than one occasion I have shot an IDPA in a suit and tie because THAT is how I am often dressed when carrying.....get some odd looks however.

Bkreutz was kind enough to post the actual rules on round count for IDPA which is quite different from USPSA. Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback. Yea, I'm gonna shoot what I carry.

Happy New Year!

I am resurrecting this thread as the 2015 v1.1 RB has the CCP Division.

Due to the 4in barrel length, this division will be dominated by the G19.
(a decision I don't think was in the best interests of everyone, although I understand that the survey of members at the nationals shows that the G19 is the most popular carry pistol, so I get it.)

Being an S&W guy, I decided to shoot a shield in this division.

I have a dedicated pistol for this, what if any, modifications are people using for a competition Shield in IDPA?

I don't know about dominated by the G19, though HQ stated that was the CCP poster-boy when the membership was voting on whether the new division should be "compact" pistols or optics.
I don't see an all-steel, 4" 1911 as a "compact", yet that gun is legal for CCP. Lots of guns with full-length frames and 4" barrels already in SSP and ESP, so what CCP really does is exclude the big guns, like G34 and full-sized 1911s, rather than really creating a division for compact guns.
They should have ignored the length, and gone with a max height requirement like BUG, since guns with short butts also have short barrels.

CCP box is pretty generous.

8.2.4.1.5 The firearm with the largest magazine inserted must fit in the IDPA gun test box measuring 8 3⁄4” x 6” x 1 3/8” ( 222.3 mm x 152.4 mm x 34.9 mm.)

Full size - .15 in too long barrel - about 1/7th (.142) (1/8 = .125, 1/6= .166)
But I think it would fit the box:

Overall Length: 7.63"
Overall Height: 5.5" / 13.9 cm
Width: 1.2"
Weight Empty (No Mag): 24.00 oz.

8.2.4.1.4 The unloaded firearm with the heaviest magazine must weigh 37.00 oz. (1048.9 grams) or less.

Not sure what a mag with 8rnds will weigh.

A 9Compact:
Barrel Length: 3.5” (8.9 cm)
Overall Length: 6.7” (17.0 cm)
Overall Height: 4.3” (10.9 cm)
Overall Width: 1.2” (3.0 cm)
Weight: 21.7 oz. (615.2 g)
Empty Mag Weight: 2.5 oz (70.9 g)

A friend frequently shoots his 9 Shield in IDPA, but he does things a little different. He shoots only head shots, takes his time and finishes either First, or very close to it, on the most accurate list every time!
(He does have to change mags A LOT!)

I have one that I carry, but for IDPA my 9 Pro has spoiled me!

I just got my Shield 9mm about a week ago. Just for the purpose of using it in the new CCP division.

My initial impressions are that it is good pistol for the division and I shoot it very well. ( I use a 4.25 inch 9mm Pro in SSP)

So thinking it through, I will be using the 8 round mags along with a 7 rounder for my "Barney" extra round loading on coming to the line.

Sometimes that one extra round makes the difference in how you run the course of fire.

Of course I always abuse myself by shooting revolver division in the sanctioned matches. So having 8 rounds is manna from heaven.:D

I will be shooting the Shield in a couple of weeks and see how it does

Interesting for the thread to show up again. I shot all the regular IDPA matches last year with my Beretta 92FS. I shot the Shield 40 in the BUG match (5 shot strings, no reloads on the clock, no drawing). Then gave the Shield 40 away to one of my brothers.

Now the CCP (or G19) division and BUG division. The Shield I gave up would have been OK for both. The J Frame I carry is now unwelcome in IDPA. I'm going to continue to shoot SSP with my Beretta and continue to have fun and hopefully improve each match.
