There's a gunshop I frequent in my travels that had a glut of local police trade-in shotguns. I've been in the area every 2 weeks for the past couple of months and picked up a shotgun each time. I started out with the 870 Parkerized Wingmaster and then followed up with 2 model 3000's, one parked/speedfeed/chrome bolt/lifter and last Monday one parked with "wingmaster" wood and black bolt and lifter.

I had them all together last night all broken down and as reported they are very much a close copy of the Wingmaster. To my eyes the internals of the S&W are bit enlarged. The ejector looks stronger to my eyes as well. I can't really tell if the vaunted Wingmaster is smoother so the S&W's must be pretty good. Overall, I'm very happy with the purchases. The 3000's aren't in perfect condition so I have no problem knocking them around and leaving them in strategic locations. Not too bad for just over $200 for an "A" grade pump shotgun.

Sounds like a good find. I had a S & W pump for a short period, but I traded it away for a 870. I wish I had kept it to round out my S & W collection.

Here's the lot of shotguns I picked up. The 1st pic is all 3 and the next few are direct comparisons with the 1984 Police Wingmaster 870. The S&W holds it's own from surface comparison.

Nice collection! I've never seen a 3000 pump other than in pictures. My understanding is S&W had them imported for only a short period in the 80's. Good find. Thanks for posting pictures.

I have an old Wingmaster in great condition and a Winchester 1300 Defender. A 3000 would be nice to have.

These shotguns are really undervalued for what you get. They were made for Police so they have that extra something to make them special (to me).

I think in reality, there was not much difference over the 870 to warrant a change in the minds of the police departments.

That, and the fact that the 3000 was sourced out of Japan. You don't see agencies buying Camrys, either, even now that they're assembled in Kentucky.

Will the 870 remington shell stopper plates fit these guns or can they be modified to?

New member on the site. Have an old model 3000 that doesn't eject the spent shell cleanly, have ordered a new ejector spring but looking at the gun, I'm wondering how the old ones comes out so when I get the new spring I can change them out. Anybody know how the ejector spring is removed on the 3000? Thanks....

Just bought one off of GB for $155 too. It needs a new rubber recoil pad. Any sources or alternative with minimal alteration?

The S&W 3000 was, if I recall correctly, the first shotgun for police, including the very popular 870, to completely solve the dreaded double feed problem with the shell elevator-thingy. I always thought the S&W 3000 suffered from the same problem that has plagued S&W many times over the years. They come up with a good idea, but don't for the foggiest reason know why it is a good idea and worse yet, seem to have no idea how to market that good idea. An awfully large number of S&W guns were "ahead of their time."

I bought another S&W 3000 for $165 this makes two of them for me.the second appears to be in better condition than the first one.

When I first started my career, we would check out shotguns from the armory on the way out to the cruisers. About 20% of the guns to pick from were old S&W 3000s and the rest were a hodge podge of 870's. I never minded whichever I got - they all shot the same at the range on on the street. Kinda wish I had one just because....

Yes. I bought a 3000 with the folding stock some years back. After looking online for the answer to your question for years I broke down & tried it. Picked up a Synthetic Remington Police stock on ebay cheap last month.

On the end of the stock that fits into the receiver it's snug up & down. Side to side there is a little play but the trigger guard holds it pretty well & once the stock is tightened up it's solid. The outside surface of the stock fits the receiver perfectly.

I used a piece of 8mm threaded rod, 3 nuts & a large flat washer with the sides clipped off. Used one nut as a jamb nut to lock the rod to the receiver & the other two to hold the stock on & lock the second nut.

Did not like the side folder. Very unpleasant to shoot. Wish I'd done this years ago.

My old agency in Illinois issued 3000's back in 80's. We must of had 20 of them. Good shotguns. Never had a problem with them. Remington just saturated the market.

I can only suggest trying Numrich and Jack First Gun. You may have to call Jack First, as they don't have a ton of parts searchable on their website.

I had a nice slug gun version years ago. Nice blued steel, sharp checkering, S&W logo on the pistol grip. Should of kept it I suppose.

Speaking of the Model 3000.....what's the front bead sight size? 3-56? I was shooting mine this past weekend and the sight flew off.

On another note, I bought one a few months ago via GB. Bad shape cosmetically but internally it was outstanding. Had it painted in DuraCoat and I refinished the wood. It's my $200 shotgun. I can honestly say the action is smoother than my duty 870 and handles better than my Mossberg 500. Just saying.

My VERY first gun purchase was a Model 3000 in 1988. I still have it and still love it. I also bought another one with folding stock and magazine extension for $99 about 10 years ago. Cant go wrong with them.

Any one knows where to find wooded furniture for this model 3000!

I believe it was mentioned in this thread by rat76 that the model 3000 stocks were interchangeable with model 870's.

The part you are seeking is called the STOCK.

Furniture on a firearm is the metal trimmings - this started in the musket days!

I have a yellow set of these. A similar set is on a riot gun currently for sale on GB. My buttstock has no buttpad but has the S&W logo and swivel stud, forend has tube with both action bars. Post is a bit dated but who knows?
But now the more I look at it, maybe it's worth holding on to.

Same here. Got mine new in 83 or 84. It's a field gun with 28" bbl and choke tubes. Still looks and works like new.

Anyone know if an Remington 870 barrel will fit on a S&W Model 3000?

Far as I know NO interchangability between the 870 barrel and S&W 3000 and probably just about all the other parts.

I have 2 S&W 3000's. The one is the parked Police gun with 20" barrel, rifle sights, folder and a 3 round extension, the other is 18" blued with bead and wood stock set. Both are in close to new condition.

Not entirely crazy about the folder. So I've now picked up a SpeedFeed 2+2 Rem 870 stock to go on it. (I've seen enough pics of S&W's with this stock on them)

As rat 76 said, the stock fits perfectly to the receiver.

The standard S&W stock bolt is too short by about an inch so I'm going to do the all thread thing as detailed below.

I hope someone else is still interested in these smooth, beautiful high quality shotguns.

Brings back memories of the old LE and Military "Trench" shotguns.

They were built to take a beating and keep on working.

I am still looking for a "Bottom Eject" that will work for a right or left handed shooter but they are hard to find, in good shape at a price that I can afford.

My brother has a few of the old Remington's and they seem to hold up.
