Default Best sling...?

Hi guys,

I'm still in the process of "pimping my ride" as it were and I've decided I need some type of sling for all the walking I don't do with this gun (20 feet at the "range" tops on an all day trip). Anyway, I would like to know what type of slings you guys & gals are using (1, 2, 3 point) and what is best. Manufacturers and links are welcome as well. I am running an ACS stock and OE tall sights/Bushnell red-dot if that makes a diff.

Thanks,
James.

Default Blue Force gear Vickers Combat Applications PADDED 2 Point Sling

I have only had 2 point slings on hunting rifles before, so I'm NOT a tatical sling expert. Having said that:

If you are considering a 2 point, look at the Blue Force Gear - Vickers Combat Applications PADDED 2 Point Sling:
Blue Force gear Vickers Combat Applications Sling

I'm very impressed with it. It's great that it quick adjusts without ever having any loose ends hanging off. Hard to explain, take a look.

The OD green Vickers sling is selling for less than $25 on sale. I just ordered two. This is a two point sling.

One point sling only had any use posturing on the range like you're an overweight, underage, or overage member of a SEAL team. Also known as the Pendulum of Pain unless you're wearing a cup. Impossible to move single-slung unless you're holding the rifle which defeats the purpose right up front. Two points work very well side swivels.

Thanks for the replys. I've been trying to decide what is practical without becoming the "tacti-fool" everyone laughs at when they're at the range. Honestly, I think my preference for a dropped thigh holster/mag pouches on the range will probably put me closer than I want to be already. Single Points are definitely out.

Back to the question at hand: Does a 3 point sling provide any advantage over a standard 2-point to warrant it's use. I run the old style leather military shooting slings on my hunting guns and like them well enough, but I saw a youtube video (man the internet is starting to cost me money) about the multiple positions a 3-point can provide and it looked very useful to me. I am mainly looking for something to allow a transition to sidearm and maybe carry some weight if I ever use this gun for hunting.

James.

Wolfe 21 - I have the same distance "challenge" you do and went the cheap and easy route. Bought one of these for the front on ebay:
QD Sling Swivel with 20mm Weaver Rail Mount - eBay (item 390265398073 end time Dec-23-10 21:58:36 PST)

and then went to Walmart and bought their cheap $7 Winchester sling. 2 point sling works perfect for my needs.

It's hard to beat a standard sling with standard QD sling swivels for price and versatility.
If you are going to carry a rifle for extended periods, check out an item called the compact rifle holster. You can walk hands free, or with walking sticks, jump on a trampoline and even do cartwheels, with you rifle on your shoulder.

I don't think there is such a thing as a one size fits all perfect sling. It all comes down to personal preference. Th perfect sling for me might not be the perfect sling for you. That being said, I like to have a sling that can work as either a 1 or 2 point sling. 1 point if I wanna be quick and be able to transition to secondary quickly and 2 point for hikes.

If your doing your thing at the range who cares if people laugh at you. You're there to either have fun or train not measure eachother's you know whats. Lately I've been going alot to practice because I want to earn my expert marksmanship badge next qualifying test for rifle and pistol. But if someone is there because they wanna have some fun with some tac gear I don't see why they should be ridiculed. Even if none of us want to admit it as men, we all have something we do thats a little nerdy. For me my 15-22 is a great example. While I actually do use it to help develope skills, I still do have fun making it look meaner than it really is. If somone at the range laughs at me because its painted or has rail ladders sh** on em.

I have a MAGUL MS2 and have had alot of success with it. I have also tried cheaper combo slings but have always had issues with the clip not being beefy enough. Considering you can find it for about 35 bucks shipped online I think you should go with the MS2 instead of paying 15-20 for a cheapo one and it breaking in the long run.

Dito on the Magpul MS2 Sling. I use the MS2 on both my 15-22 MOE and my RRA - Elite OPpr2 w/ Magpul ASAP (Ambidextrous Sling Attachment Point).

I get a similar "hanging position" for both Rifles. I've added a Front Sling Adapter with Swivel to the left side of the railed hand guard on the 15-22 MOE

When you need a two point, pull the adjustment tab on the sling, pop the MS2 latch clip, and reattach on the front swivel.. ta da...a two point!

Regardless of the type of sling... get a "quality made sling" you won't regret spending a few dollars more.

Aim small,

TAT

+1 on VTAC, though I favor the original (non-padded). The quick adjust setup is nice.

Lightbulb check out vickers or boonie packer

I decided to try out the VCAS 2pt from Vickers/Blue Force Group... it's not exactly a budget piece at $45 or so. I'm still waiting for it to arrive.

However, there is also the "Victory" sling based on the VCAS design (lesser hardware) that runs from $25-35 depending on color.

As yet another 2pt alternative, I found out Boonie Packer apparently designed the basis of the Vicker design... and their versions only cost around $16.

For normal people, single-point is just not practical, imho.

I'm pretty sure you'll like it. If for whatever reason you don't, since its MAGPUL you can re-sell it for most of your money back on eBay or post it up in the classifieds on here and I'm sure someone would relieve you of it .

Got a cheap Blackhawk Tactical 2-point with my last parts order. Surprisingly good quality for the price, but will probably end up on my 590. Will work on the 15-22 for now, but I will upgrade to some type of 3-point sling in the future.

I received the BFG VCAS today... and by chance, also the Boonie Packer 2P-TQA (w/ M4 attach kit).

Design-wise, they are pretty much identical. Some things I noted:
  • VCAS is lighter weight (about 1oz. less)
  • VCAS uses a heavier, stiffer webbing material than the BP 2P, but both are 1.25" wide versions
  • VCAS uses "Acetal" (plastic) buckles and hardware, the BP 2P uses metal.
  • Both seem equally smooth in terms of the quick-adjust option and have attached strap-tails about 4" long to grab and rapidly pull. The BP 2P version actually has a stiff rod sewn into the tail to make it even easier to grab.
  • The VCAS has a quick-release buckle at the stock end if this is important to you (presumably for quick egress if you are jumping out of helicopters or into water...)

If I had to do it again, I think the Boonie Packer 2P-TQA (w/ M4 Kit) for $18.95 shipped is a tremendous value. Esp. compared to the VCAS which came to $46.95 shipped. I'd highly recommend the Boonie Packer for anyone who is considering a 2-point sling setup.

As for the Magpul MS2, It's good in theory, but to properly apply it as designed, you need a 1P end plate such as the Magpul ASAP (among many others) which is difficult/impossible to mount on the 15-22. DD does make a rather expensive "EZ mount" rear sling mount that clamps onto the receiver extension that works, but you lose the shortest stock setting when it is installed. Some other owners have gone the route of drilling/installing their own sling mounts or just resorting to zip-ties and paracord to get around this. Whatever floats your boat! The 15-22 MOE edition has a sling mount at the rear of the receiver, I believe, but it's not designed for the 1P slings, afaik since it has a conventional sling swivel installed.

IMHO for the majority of us, a 2-point sling is by far more practical, esp. on a 15-22 unless you have specific training needs. This is a good read by Larry Vickers if you would like further discussion of 1P vs. 2P vs. 3P sling "technology."
