Default Accurate Ammo Testing

So I've been reading and reading and have seen interesting posts about accuracy....but it raised some questions that maybe those that have done multiple load testing sessions.

Let's say, for instance, I saw one post that had the 36gr HP CCI's against the 40gr Mini Mags and the 36gr won out. Makes sense, we only got 1:15 twist barrels which will shoot better with lighter loads.

But, what I'm wondering is, what happens if you sight it in for the 40grains? Will the 36's still be better?

Are the people who test different rounds adjusting their sites to compensate for each round to even out the playing field of the tests?

It would seem to me that unless you adjust your sites for each ammo, you're not actually showing how well each INDIVIDUAL round performs on it's own, on it's own settings.

I understand that just shooting groups of each will give you a general idea, but doesn't seem optimal...any thoughts????

As long as you hold on the exact same spot on the target, the group sizes will always be the same size even if the group itself isnt on the bullseye.

Ah yes, that makes sense. So as long as it's group size measurements and not how close to the bullseye, no need for adjusting sites. Makes total sense.

Good call.

Wow, hope thats not sarcasm.

If you want to know the mechanical/potential accuracy of the gun/ammo combination all that matters is group size. But yea, once you know which ammo makes the tightest groups in your gun you zero your sights for that ammo, thats a givin.

Just sucks how tone can't come through in text haha. No worries. Every barrel is unique so you gotta get out there and test your own ammo to see what ur 15-22 likes best.

There are three components of accuracy: Ammo, Rifle, Shooter.

The only way to accuracy test ammunition with your rifle is to take YOU out of the mix. This means a rock solid shooting bench. Clamped in a large vice would be best. Some ammo will shoot better in your rifle than it does in mine.

You also need ammo that feeds reliably. This may not be the ammo that shoots the tightest groups.

Once you find ammo with acceptable accuracy that feeds reliably zero for your normal shooting range. The M&P15-22 will battlesight nicely at 50 yards and hit nicely at all ranges out to 75 yards.

When zeroing adjust the sights, not the sites... Unlike the M16/M4 you're probably going to have to adjust the rear sight for elevation.
