Scope mounting problems

I attempted to mount a 6-18 scope on my 15-22 using the Burris PEPR mount. Mounting was simple enough, but when I attempted to boresight it at 25 yds I ran into a problem. The scope was dialed toward the point of impact as much as possible, but I ran out of adjustment with my point of aim is still about 3" high and 2" right.

I suspect the problem is with the mount, either my mistake in mounting it or a problem with the PEPR. Has anyone experienced a similar problem, in particular with the PEPR?

My understanding is that the PEPR retains its zero, which in this case exacerbates the problem. If I remount it, is it going to remain 'looking' in the wrong place?

I emailed Burris last week, and called them today. No answer to the email, and I couldn't get a human being on the phone.

Any ideas? Shim the scope perhaps? Remount the scope in the rings? I'm pretty much at a loss.

For clarification on your statement, are you aiming center mass on your target and the point of impact is 3" high and 2" to the right?

Are you getting a good cheek to stock weld (for consistent alignment shot to shot) or does the height of the scope cause you to lift your face off the stock to get a clear/centered image through the scope? If you are lifting it could be a parallax issue. (please don't be offended if you already know this). I would suspect that a 6-18 power scope has a fixed parallax of ~100-150yds. At 25yds, apparent parallax could be pretty significant even with slight movement of your eye from the center of the scope.

Parallax in Rifle Scopes

Is the mount square on the rail? Are there any burrs on the rail that might affect proper mounting?

If you suspect a problem with the mount, turn the mount around and re-install the scope so the mount is backwards on the rifle. Re-sight the scope and see if you are still maxed out with your point of impact still 3" high but 2" to the LEFT. If this is happening, your mount isn't parallel to the bore and it is a problem with the mount.

How does the scope function on another rifle (i.e. can you rule out the scope)?

Dan,
I use a PEPR on my M&P15-22. No issues with it obtaining zero for that rifle.

After verifying the possible parallax issue, have you checked to see if your scope will zero properly on another rifle?

Here is my PEPR with a Millet DMS-1.....

they are the best one-piece mount bar none under $100, it shouldn't be any problem.

Good point, but it's actually a Colorado-made Redfield Five Star. Older scope, probably circa mid-90's, but it's a good one.

OK...so it is either the scope of the mount....or the parallax issue, which would really have to be bad to be off by that much. I mean, I'm using a scope intended for a .223 and so the parallax for it is probably 100 yds. Nothing at all close to what is commonly used for an intended .22LR type scope.

You gotta test one or the other.....mount or scope.

Put the scope on a known good mount or put a known good scope on the mount.

Thanks for the input, all.

I'm confident in the scope. It's been on other rifles and performed just fine.

I bought the mount from the Bargain Cave at Cabela's...which leads me to suspect that the former owner may have experienced similar problems. I've read very little negative feedback on the PEPR; I'm thinking I may just have a lemon.

Too bad - I really like the mount.
