M&P 15-22 Ambi Safety Selector

Does anyone have any experience with ambi safety selectors on the 15-22? Will it accept std. AR style ambi safety? Is so, which one is best?

A standard AR15 ambi-safety will not fit on your M&P 15-22. If you are a southpaw like me, and just want the safety on the right side of the frame, the safety is reversible.

No, standard AR Ambi's do not fit, the receiver is wider than an AR15.

This however might with some tweaking.

Since both levers are removable and 'mate' with the center cylinder, the tangs on the levers might be long enough to grab the cylinder when it's in the proper location in the receiver with respect to the trigger. Some sort of spacer(s) (or JB Weld..??) might need to be fabricated to fill the gap between the female slots on the cylinder and the male tangs on the levers.

Here's what I'm thinking....

In order to make an ambi out of the existing safety you have to get one of these and modify the end of your existing safety to accept the lever.

It's not that big of a deal for a plinker anyway. Was just curious. It's my son's gun and he is rt. handed. I was just gonna Dr. it up so I could play with it properly myself. Perhaps I just need to go buy another one for me and reverse it's safety as ADN suggests.

Battle arms development make one specific for the 15-22. I have installed one in mine and works great.

You literally just remove it and install it backwards. It is a really easy mod. Take the bits out, turn them around, install again with the switch on the off side.

However, there isn't much need for it, you can manipulate the safety with your left hand. It does just require breaking your shooting grip on the pistol grip, but that isn't much of an issue with a plinker and you can train to do it really fast.

In all honesty you don't need yuur thumb to be behind the pistol grip at all and can use the grip in a similar fashion as a "conventional" wooden stock would.

I worked with Battle Arms Development to bring their Ambidextrous Safety Selector kit to the 15-22. The kit gives the shooter the ability to customize the safety selector to their liking by having several different style of levers.

I am thinking of getting 1 of those safety selector. Love the look of them. But what i really interested in is that Brass Detlector the that has the Release that lets it swing up...
Anytime on when those might be ready for sale...???

Magpul'd out. MBUIS, stock, rail covers, afg2, BAD lever, ambi safety selector, grip, and sling (not shown).

Just for the record... the Magpul selector is a sixty degree selector... meaning it only rotates sixty degrees in order to deactivate the safety, not ninty degrees. Just some added info for those who may look at the lever and think it is binding on the safety guards on the receiver. It does not bind at all.

The Battle Arms Development safety which is made for the 15-22 works GREAT!!!! Also, he will let you exchange levers until you get the ones you like....

For the 15-22, it's a much superior product to the MagPul.

If have to disagree. It's a matter of functionality and what you're looking for. If you say it's superior because it fits better, that's not a reason for classifying superiority. Actual functionality would be. Now superiority to the OEM... Sure. It's a hunk of polymer with a polymer pin and weak spring.

The STS lever is the product... It just has Magpul branded levers.

The STS lever is the exact same lever I use on my AR. I did put an actual AR spring and detent pin in as well... But it gives the same feel as my AR. It's also a 60 degree lever... Which I specifically selected for my AR due to a faster weapon ready to fire situation.

Duplicating the operation in most areas of my actual weapon is important to me for training purposes. Due to the location of the outdoor ranges to fire my AR, I purchased the 15-22 to emulate that platform. So it's only natural to have the same safety on each. I wouldn't want to train on a 90 degree selector on my training rifle and then use a 60 on my operational weapon.

Regardless... Maybe a more accurate statement would have been "in my opinion it's superior to levers not specifically designed for the 15-22".

Another reason for my choosing the 15-22 was its ability to accept actual AR platform upgrades/modifications. It's also cheaper then buying another full AR platform and just putting a .22lr conversion kit in it to replicate my AR 100%.

However, I'm not putting a conversion kit on an operational platform. I won't even get into how fouled the weapon would be following a range trip.

Whew... Okay... So, "superiority" is a matter of opinion. Long story short. Haha.

How were you able to make this work? I Tried one and it wasn't wide enough. Thanks in advance.

I know it may sound bogus, but I got the left side on first, then lined up the right side... The screw hole was just a hair off, but when I started screwing in the retaining pin, it lined up fine. I did use a small electronics screwdriver as well.

There was some slight friction when moving the switch initially, but it worked it's way smooth after actuating it every now and then.

You do lose that tell tale "click" once it's installed, but there's no denying it's functionality.

I have made my 15-22 mimic my actual AR to the T for training purposes... So I love the ambi safety.

ok so you did't do anything special thats what I needed to know, thank you, I am doing the same thing replicating my 15-22 to my ar and I run these Magpul/Noveske 60 deg selectors on all my AR's so I want one on my 15-22 as well. Thanks again.
