I once lived in Troy, IL. St Louis is across the river in MO.
Yes, the FOID is a BIG deal, and you need to get one ASAP when you become a resident of IL.
Outside of Chicago, the possession and transportation laws are fairly easy to understand. Pay attention to the requirement to use a case that completely encloses the gun.
Despite what some activists claim, there is no provision in IL law to carry a handgun for protection.
AFAIK, the semi-auto .22 is still legal in Troy.

IL law allows local laws that differ from the general state laws on firearms, so watch out for East ST Louis, IL, Chicago, and other towns near Chicago.
Given a choice, I would live across the river in MO if at all possible. However, I was stationed at Scott AFB and had to be on the IL side. Southern IL is not bad generally, but the IL gun laws are dictated by Chicago politics and have severe penalties.
Oh yes, welcome to the forum!

I actually created an account for the forum just to answer this. I live in Belleville and have a few S&W's myself. Illinois is one of the nastier states, but not the worst. At least we don't have any current restrictions on magazine capacity, stock or grip type, etc. You absolutely have to get a FOID card once you become a resident, or you won't even be able to legally transport your owned weapons. The Belleville Fairgrounds is having a gun show this weekend (June 25-26th) and there is usually a guy in the middle with a big banner who does FOID card applications. I think it was $20 a month or two ago, but part of that goes to him to cover his time. you can do it on your own, but this guy makes it easier for the extra $20 or so. Roughly 4 weeks later you'll get your card depending on how backlogged the state is.
So far, in cities in our area (St. CLair and Madison County) nothing is banned and every version of the 15-22 is legal. There is a proposed law up for discussion that will ban almost anything "black" in Illinois, so get them while you can. I hear this law is up almost every year, but what happens if this is the year it passes, you know?
To transport any firearm in Illinois, all you have to do is keep it away from the driver (trunk, hatch, etc.) in a fully enclosed case like OKFC05 said, and make sure it's unloaded. You can have loaded mags right next to it, but nothing inside the weapon or chambered.
Also like OKFC05 said, move to Missouri if you can. I worked at Scott AFB for years myself, and now work across the river. I'm definitely moving to Missouri when the timing is right! Enjoy your new 15-22!

That is terrible you have to go through so much to use a natural born right that is guaranteed in the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
How did people let it get so bad???
Can you imagine if we had to do all that to be one these forums? First Amendment and all that. How about paying for the Fifth Amendment? No pay, no protection from being deprived of life, liberty, or property. Or pay to vote, or to have representation. There would be an uproar like nobody has ever seen. But the Second Amendment??? It seems as though some people think it does not really mean what it says. Our "leaders" are not that at all, they are the employees of the Citizens of the United States.

In Canada , to acquire and possess firearms , a citizen needs to have a license which is granted only after a test is passed.
In addition each firearm must be registered with the data kept in a central registry by the police. For some firearms...pistols, AR15s..which are restricted ..a citizen also needs a separately issued Authority to Transport to be able to take them anywhere . The terms of these ATTs usually permit moving them between a person's residence and a licensed range ONLY.
How did this happen? The election of statist governments which believe that government knows better than individuals how the citizens should live their lives and that the government should have a monopoly on weapons.

Stay out of Cook County in general. I am so happy to have moved out for so many reasons. Many villages do not allow for any ownership of pistols. My sons Yugo SKS is not allowed, just a good place to be from.
They (folks in Cook County) just accept graft a natural and normal part of politics and life.

In Florida you pay $167.00 for a concealed carry permit and you get your constitutional right to walk down the street with a firearm, if you cover it up with your coat. It is against Florida law to do it any other way. I have a nephew in Illinois who teaches the Florida concealed carry classes near Marion . , Illinois. He has never had an Illinois student send their money to Florida and not recieve a florida carry permit.@ 167.00 ea. (Go Figure) Permit is recognized in 34 States. A lot of states are realizing that Florida is getting to rich, and are starting their own rip-off, charging you for your rights, permits. Good luck , In Illinois,
Mike
PS. Rumor has it that Trapping Licenses will be required with Mouse traps.

Thank goodness we don't have to pay for our First Amendment rights or get a license to type or carry a laptop.
