Hey all. I'm deciding between 40gr and 36gr HP Mini Mags and wanted to understand the differences and pros / cons between the two.
Pricing is pretty much the same. Other factors include:
- Accuracy
- Which one is 'dirtier' for the gun?
- and just general differences between the two like what does a 4gr difference mean?
- What's the "HP" mean?

What personal experiences have you all had?

Thanks in advance

HP = hollow point
The missing 4gr is from the hollow point hole
Everything else is the same.
Some people report better accuracy with a hollow point bullet due to the uniform bow wave, but in a semi-auto .22 the gun is unlikely to show any difference. (might in a bolt target rifle)
The .22 rifles are the most individual about ammo of most any caliber, and you just need to shoot them and see what you and your gun shoot well.

With some autos, feeding from the magazine could be a consideration as well.

Otherwise the difference is 4 grains and that ain't enough to worry about.

thank you for the info...

are these relatively "clean" bullets?

I consider the Mini-Mags, a premium brand. A bit more money than the "bulk" buys, but worth it.

Hollow points are much more effective of small game.

The MiniMag HP may have better bullet expansion than the solid bullet. For me I am only looking to kill any animal I shoot my 15-22 at so I use the MiniMag HP. That said the HP doesn't have great bullet expansion and I would like to try the MiniMag segmented ammo.

thanks for the feedback all.

I'm lookin at a pretty good deal (i think) for a bulk order of mini mags for about 6 cents a round after shipping for 2,500 rounds.

I might just pull the trigger on the 36gr HP's if y'all think it's a good deal

I've heard the same thing, the bullet is a little shorter because of the hollow point and doesn't load the same.

also check out cci tactical. they seem almost like bulk mini mag sp ammo.

you may also want to check walmart for mini mags as the one near me has them for about .06 rd for purchase in 100 packs.

I also stock a lot of CCI Mini Mags, purchased primarily at Walmart.

They usually seem to have more 36gr hollow points so I have about a 2:1 ratio in my collection, but also some decent amounts of the 40gr round nose.

The thing is, Walmart has pretty good prices. The one I shop at, they don't always have all their ammos and of course the selection is hit and miss, but the prices of what they do have is pretty good. For a long while it was $6.47 per 100, went up recently to $6.99 per 100. (All the ammo seemed to have gone up at Walmart but at least in my area, I'm in Jersey but we don't have ammos at Walmart so I cross the river in Pennsy and buy their)- we are the most expensive area in the USA in the TriState NJ/NY/PA area but from my internet reading, our Walmart let us off easy. Ppl on GlockTalk and other sites are talking about several dollars a box increases, from like $10.99 boxes of 9mm all the way up to $35 boxes of bulks. I can't complain about a .50 raise on Mini Mags- because its STILL about the cheapest you'll find around. Online is certainly POSSIBLE to find cheaper but- its about the best deal when you consider you usually have to order a nice chunk of moneys worth of them to get the better price, THEN add on the shipping.

So for me, buying things like Mini Mags, 525 Fed Bulk & 325 Fed AutoMatch, etc. is great to buy at Walmart. IS it as cheap as a 50000000 rd buy at Cabelas etc. when they come down to like .0298 cents a round? No. But you ain't got to spend $100-$500 on them either, so for me I like that.

CCI is the bomb, Mini Mags most reliable for the dough there is.
