Default Scope or Reddot?

OK, I just traded for a 15/22 and have shot 50 rounds. I am thinking about flip up sites and either a scope or reddot. This rifle will only be used plinking. If I go with a standard scope I will for go the cost of the flip up sites. What does everyone run?

Arrow My penny and a half........

I'm a HUGE fan of the .22, but not in an AR platform. I have no experience in this particular area. But, I do run an Eotech 552 holosight on my M4 Bushmaster. I also have the mini-Y comp. so I can shoot repeatedly and keep my eyes on the target/sight or sights. I've used a scope, and had no issues. I do, however, prefer a no magnification 1 m.o.a. dot for speed and accuracy. I also see the value of flip-up sight covers on any optic as well as flip sights (must co-witness with optic). JMO

I run a red dot for my 15-22. My 10/22 uses a scope.

I use a 1x red dot and MBUS for offhand plinking fun at soda cans, shotgun shells and other debris at distances typically no further than 50-75yds. I use the red dot about 90% of the time with MBUS flipped down. For shooting offhand I like to keep things light. The 15-22 is one of the lightest rifles among it's competitors. The combined weight of the red dot and MBUS (below) is about the same weight as the 15-22 factory iron sights alone. // If you do most of your shooting from a supported position then I think a magnified optic with crosshairs is the way to go.

It all matters what you want to do with yours- I am not a scoped rifle type on my ARs, neither my 5.56 Bushmaster nor my 15-22. BUT plenty of people certainly are!

One of the best things about the 15-22 is it is ABSOLUTELY VERSATILE - the same exact rifle can be set up as a complete dedicated CQB rifle (like me) , a Patrolman's Carbine like.... a scoped rifle, a SPR, or a hunting rifle with a tactical look.

For ME, I have two other .22LRs that fill two other roles... my Remington 597 is a sporter rifle but it has a high power quality scope, internal upgrades, a bipod, etc. so it's my semi auto sniper rifle. My Savage Mark II GXP .22LR is a classic looking, wood stock, bolt action, high power high quality scoped rifle... For absolute reliability (bolt action), accuracy (bolt action Savage!) and classical looks and feel, i got the Mark II GXP... For autoloading accuracy, speed, and tactical urban rimfire operations, I got the 597.

So the 15-22 became my CQB weapon in rimfire. My stock is pinned all the way closed, the AFG and XTM panels all invite CQB holds, the MBUS are perfect for 25 yds ,and it wears an Aimpoint Micro R-1 . PERFECT. When you sling it in front of your chest, you could really make the caase its the perfect little carbine. it's not QUITE as portable or concealable as the MP5-PK or even the former 15-22P but, it's got a full size barrel and stock too so, it's more accurate.

Again, there is no right or wrong answer here. Many people have done many different things and they all love theirs. The only thing you have to realize is, no matter what you do, mine will be cooler than anyone elses because, my 15-22 is The Benevolent Dictator For Life.

Well a tough question, but try this:
Since the M&P 15/22 is a tactical copy of the AR15, lets say it will be more used for CQB up to 50yrds, so a non-magnification optics like a RED DOT is your solution with iron sites as backup (flip rear only needed).

Now, if you plan to do small game hunting, squirrel, ground hogs, then a scope with magnification 9X30 with no iron sites. That should fit the bill.. Happy hunting great white hunter!

Primary Arms red dot sits on top of my 15-22. Great little sight for the money. I also have a scope for it also that I can slap on if needed.

If properly mounted a red dot sight does not need the expense of folding sights. A telescope usually requires removing or folding the rear sight. If you use the Aimpoint (M68 CCO) dot sight on your duty or go-to carbine a clone on the M&P15-22 will work wonderfully.

Note how the top two rifles are set up. SightMark clone on the M&P15-22; M68 CCO (Aimpoint CompM) on the LWRC M6-SL. (The M6A1 has an Eotech 553 and the M4 is "dotless" in this photo but carries an other M68 over the handguards normally.)

I couldnt decide either, so I went with an illuminated scope. Best of both worlds.

Question 'nother question

Just got my MOE 15-22. Added a red dot and got it sighted in nicely. Is there any reason I should use the (flip up) iron sights either instead of or in conjunction with the red dot? I seem to be able to hit a milk jug at 100 to 150 yards pretty consistently with just the red dot. Thoughts/recommendations anybody?

Just received my Sightmark Red Dot model SM13041, I have to say it is very well built, ordered on Amazon and it came super fast (10-25 rec. 10-27). Came with cantilever mount (not quick release) but I have a A.R.M.S. quick release on order as well. I'll test on my M&P but since no real recoil I don't believe I'll have a problem. Great Red Dot guys..

Getting old, I forgot to mention, I have a Vortex Strikefire on one of my AR15. The Strikefire has a removal 2X magnification attachment that comes free with the order, so that's another option, kinda best of both worlds... Good luck. Also good price as low as $139 on Amazon & Ebay.

nm-
I only wish I knew enough about computers to do do a website. I just yesterday learned how to post a link! ( and I don't have a friend who owns it) I just stumbled upon it, finally decided to try it and was very satisfied. When I find something I like I don't mind spreading the word. Another place people seem to like is RRAGES, but I have no first hand experience with them.

Deleted this by accident so am putting it back up because I do think it addresses the question well.

one thing I'd like to add for ppl just new or starting out and reading this:

THERE IS NO WRONG ANSWER HERE AND THE 15-22 IS SO PERFECTLY CUSTOMIZABLE YOU CAN USE ANYTHING YOU LIKE.

And I mean that, whatever YOU *LIKE* ... It's all about personal preference in my humbling bumbling opinion.

The 15-22 can be a scoped rifle, a CQB carbine, an assault rimfire or a gentle squirrel shooter. It can have a Designated Marksman look or a Special Forces configuration. What do YOU LIKE? Also what HELPS YOU The most? In my personal portfolio, I have (had at the time of purchase, as well) two scoped rifles, an autoloading scoped rimfire and a bolt action scoped rimfire. I did not really NEED another scoped rifle for rimfire... Just didn't make any sense. I could absolutely use the Aimpointed CQB carbine assault rimfire i made it. Not that I'm ever gonna do any missions but hey, now I'm covered. so there wasn't a lot of reason to put a 3-9 etc. on it. you may find, hey I bought the 15-22 and I could really use an small animal rifle ,ad n I have no scoped rimfire- and the 15-22 is such a great weapon it's perfectly capable of serving the role of a target shootin rimfire rifle that happens to look awesome, so you put a rifle telescope on it and it instantly fulfills your needs.

For me the 15-22 is all about wants. My rifle looks absolutely amazing and it is all custom pimped and honesty, I could probably replicate it and mass produce them and sell them as the Scrapmaster Edition- CQSC - Close Quarters Scrappy Carbine , Magpul enhanced lol.

But YOU do what makes YOU happy and what helps YOUR weapon needs.

And when you're finished, take the pictures and compete for the #2 spot on best looking, because as far as #1, the Best Looking 15-22, i got that all locked DOWN son!
