Default Painting M&P 15-22

Hey guys Im new to the site. I have a MP 15-22 that is all black from the factory. If I wanted to paint the grip, stock etc like the new ones how would I go about that? I like the ones with the OD green or desert khaki accessories but dont want to screw up my rifle. I also want it to be durable and not chip or flake off. Something along the lines of this picture.

Hi Rob,

Welcome to the forum.
Those pieces are not painted they are accessories from magpul. Magpul Industries Ecommerce I am not sure how you could paint your stock stuff, maybe a plastic paint or die? IMO you are better off buying new pieces like the grip and stock.

Hi the easiest way would be to just replace the parts with the magpul parts in the color you want! as the picture your reffering to is what they did.
No chipping and realy hard to screw it up.

Painting well you could try DuraCoat Firearm Finishes
Linky...DURACOAT FIREARM FINISHES DIRECT

They have all kinds of colors and paterns avaible

Some have even used krylon fusion paint for plastic

Welcome to the forum. You will find a lot of experienced members who are very willing to share their knowledge.

Here is a link to a YouTube video on painting an AR-15. A couple of years ago the TV show Shooting USA showed how to camo paint an AR.

I've used krylon and rustoleum camo paint in od and tan on a few different rifles and they all turned out excellent and have held up very well just take your time and do multiple light coats instead of 2 thick coats

If you want to paint, it's all about the preperation.
Make sure everything is de greased, free from dust, and completely dry.
Mask off those parts you can't remove and don't want paint on.
If it's going to be a pattern, think out what you want to do before you start laying down paint.
And when ever possible, paint from lightest to darkest color.
Above all else take your time, don't be in such a hurry that you smudge the job or don't allow enough time to dry before reassembly.

ETA:
And wear gloves if you want a perfect finish, skin oils can play havoc with a nice clean surface.

Excellent info guys thanks. I am fairly new to guns but have gotten the "bug" and now can't get enough of them. So if I ask stupid questions I apologize in advance. Please be patient with the newbie.

We've all been in your shoes, some of us just longer ago than others.

One caution on the painting; whatever drying time is listed, add 50 percent. Paint must be fully cured and under some conditions that can take longer than the instructions specify.

Good luck with the project.

Default Painting

I painted mine with spray paint. I used a plastic primer first, then Rustoleum camo tan on top. Once it was all to my liking, I finished it off with a clear coat. I used multiple thin coats of primer, paint and clear. A for the how I did it, I took the stock and grip off, disassembled the magazine and painted them and I masked off the receiver area with newspaper and the barrel, I inserted a used paper towel roll down into the handguard all the way in and wrapped the rest of the barrel with paper. Long, tedious process, but I like it better than buying the Magpul stuff. It cost me $20 and have a completely new gun vs. &100+ for the Magpul version. One additional thin I did was paint the knurled end of the buttstock with rubber coat spray paint. About 4 layers, pretty thick, and took it just over the edge and finished the edge off with black pinstriping to protect the rubber painted edge. This is an awesome mod you could do to any 15-22 as it gives some serious grip to the stcok instead of the slippery plastic. If you want any other help/advice, feel free to ask.

No such thing as a stupid question.
Just stupid mistakes from those that were afraid to ask.
