Okay, we all love our 15-22's. I get that. But a light bulb lit up in my little mind this week after some range time with my beloved old Marlin 782. What about a 15-22 in .22 Magnum? I personally would buy one on the spot. Sure it would be more expensive to shoot, but I do love the .22WMR cartridge. It would make a great little hunting rig.

What say all of you?

I think it sounds like a cool idea. I'm sure people will buy them. I just wouldn't be one of them due to the cost of ammo.

I have to agree with JaPes. I traded a savage model 93 .22WMR on a new 15-22 today. I shot more rounds through the 15-22 this afternoon then I did the savage in 10+ years. Average cost of .22WMR is over $9.00. I can almost shot 9mm for that.

Yes it sure would be cool to have one in 22 mag; but it would just sit in the safe due to the cost of the ammo.

A lot of folks have these little 22's due to the cost of .223 ammo.

I've often wondered myself why it has not been offered in 15-22 or as an option for an upper for the standard AR? It would be sweet for praire dogs, etc. It definitely would not get the use of the 22 version but there is a market for it.

You would need new mags with a different internal design for one. The barrel would be the least of the problems. I see no practical use for it since it will not outshoot a bolt gun in that caliber. Maybe .17 HM2 instead. You could use the same mags I am pretty sure. HHMMM a suppressed semi-auto in .17 HM2, I wonder.

I too have two 782s, 22 WMR. Love them and I would love to see the M&P 15/22 chambered in 22WMR.. I would get on in a heart beat. I wouldn't use for plinking but it brings the M&P into the larger and further varmit area. I posted this same question on an earlier post...

Alexander Arms just made a .17 HMR but I'm sorry to say I bet they go over like a lead balloon. Bewteen the safety concerns of ruptured cases and cost of ammo I don't see this being a big seller. Add to that you can't reload the cases or hand make your own ammo. The .22 WMR would be pretty much the same.

Well Gents, you raise some very good points that in my haste I forgot. Sigh...I guess you are all correct. So much for that idea.

I have heard that the Alexander Arms 17 was very problematic and did not function well at all. This was from Tom Gresham's Gun Talk radio show...a man I trust. He did offer that he may have just received a bad rifle, but you would think they would have sent their best stuff given that he has a national radio show.

and the cost of .223 ammo doesnt cost much more than .22 wmr. if you reload you can make your .223 ammo cheaper than .22 wmr and more capable

I would buy one also.. Price of ammo aside I think it would be another "fun gun " to shoot and hunt with. I have read that someone is working on it but like posted before its not as easy as would think.
