I did a search but couldn't find anyone talking about using an ambidextrous mag release on the M&P 15-22. Anyone try one of the few that seem to be available? They all seem to rock over the body of the upper receiver to pull the mag catch out, but I was wondering if the polymer would hold up to that kind of force repeatedly. Also, I've seen that there are aftermarket mag release buttons available, but are the rest of the components standard? If the body of the upper is wider than a standard AR-15, would a standard mag catch even work?

The Troy & Knights Armament both have a lever that pivot lever to pull the mag catch and it does rub on the body of the lower receiver. I do not know if they will work on the 15-22. I will be buying those to test, once they are in stock at my distributors.

The Norgon Ambi-Catch™ will work on the 15-22 and does not pivot off of the body of the lower receiver. It will work with the factory mag release button and should work with most aftermarket buttons.

I use an oversize mag release button from NDZ; makes it east to just reach up and release the mag with the tip of my trigger finger. My two grandson's 15-22s are so equipped, as well. I also have NDZ's bolt release lever installed, so both the mag release and bolt release are readily accessible with very little movement of my trigger finfer.

I must have missed how the Norgon worked when I was looking at it. The picture on the Midway USA sight actually shows it best. I like the way it doesn't touch the receiver, but I may wait until you get the others to try out and hopefully report on.

That's the problem with shooting lefty...I can hit the bolt release easily with my trigger finger, but not the mag release. You got off easy though, the ambi bolt release is a bit less expensive than the ambi mag release ;)

Yup, that's an inconvenience to be sure.

It's interesting that I am left handed ... eating, writing, and a couple other things. For everything else, including shooting, I am right handed.

But I'm happy and so am I. :D

I have a Troy on my M&P15 Sport. I did try it out on the 15-22 and the receiver is too thick on the 15-22 for it to work properly. I couldn't get it to secure a mag. I've looked at the Knights Armament one and can't be sure if it would work or not.
The Norgon is probably the way to go. I'm not thrilled about it's price tag though...

$90!!!! Yikes!!!!

Well if the Troy does not work then I doubt the KAC will. I will probably still order one to try it out later this week.

Do they have a patent on this?

Yep, US Patent 5,519,954

The price is a deterrent for some, but it is a well made piece and functions perfectly.

Yeah, call me a sell-out but I just bought a Norgon, like not even 5 minutes ago. I choked the price down the way a kid would their vegetables. Damn EBR disease... Like I said I have the Troy on my AR15, and I love it. Being a left hander, it makes me feel less retarded when trying to work the rifle the way a right hander would. But the way the Troy release is designed, it just won't work with the 15-22. The price is more reasonable but it won't work. Norgon it is. Bottom line, I want the same functionality out of my 15-22 as I have with my M&P15.

I am SO happy I shoot right-handed! :)

I consider it an excellent trade-off for my crappy left-handed handwriting. :D

Major, you are so lucky! I too have crappy handwriting. The bright side is I can always lie and say I'm a doctor and purely based on my handwriting people will believe me.

It's weird the way it works. Though with shooting I feel it has more to do with your master eye than your dominate hand. I can hold and operate a rifle right handed, it's just the aiming part that feels awkward...

Even my printing is almost unreadable once it gets cold. :)

Fortunately, I am also right-eye dominate. I can "shoot from the hip" left-handed with no problem, but aimed fire takes real concentration. The same applies to weak-hand pistol shooting.

Huh? Next you are going to tell me you shift with your left hand and you clutch with your right foot.....and if that's true, then you're my hero, lol.

I did try driving a stick shift, right-hand drive vehicle once (the clutch was still on the left, though) but gave up after almost destroying the transmission. :D

When I order mine I will be sure to get it from you! I take it prices are all the same? Looking to get a charging handle aswell!!!

Prices should be the same across the board, if you do find it cheaper let me know and I will price match it.

Charging handles are still are probably still 3 months out.
