I pickup my new 15-22 tomorrow and I was curious what case people use to store it. I'm in a tiny townhouse so we don't have room for a safe anywhere so I have to use the cable locks for now. I have a cheap Mossy Oak zippered case I use for my Marlin .22 that's pretty nice for the price. So, what do you use?

I picked up an Uncle Mike's Law Enforcement 33-Inch AR15/M4 Tactical Rifle Case at my local gun shop. It has one long pocket for the manual and some small adjusting tools I keep on hand. The long pocket can also hold 8" Dirty Bird targets. There are also three magazine pockets. Three was sufficient when I purchased it, but now I wish I had five (the Uncle Mike's five pocket case is 43" long, and that's just too long for me).

I lock it with a combination luggage lock through the holes in the ends of the zippers.

I do have a safe for my toys but when transporting I use a Blackhawk Tactical Rifle case. It's black, padded, has pockets for up to five magazines, and has a long zippered pocket that can hold a scope, sling, or what-have-you. They aren't too expensive and can lock easily also. The only downside is that it LOOKS like a tactical-type rifle case and that can attract unwanted attention sometimes. If you are looking for something semi-armored for home storage, Stack-On makes some unassembled locking gun cabinets with a very small footprint that can be secured to a wall to deter thieves. They have pretty good key lock systems and can fit in a bedroom closet very easily. The best thing is you bring them home in pieces, put it together in private, and your neighbors are none the wiser. Good luck with whatever way you go.

I transport in a soft padded tactical type case that holds 5 magazines in separate pouches. The fine wood stock rifles transport in a padded plastic hard case. The firearms are stored at home in a Liberty safe.

I picked up a Flambeau hard case from Academy for $25 for mine. Great case and $10 less than Amazon.

I got their 2 rifle sized case for about the same price from amazon. Good hard case. Only thing is the foam does not come glued to the inside of the case so you have to do it yourself. Has a few holes for locks.

I use a 5.11 36" AR case for transporting my 15-22. I strapped four magazine pouches to the outside webbing and it works quite well for the rifle and accessories, back up parts, etc.

A locked soft case is good only for keeping curious little hands out. 15 seconds with a box cutter and the firearm is on someone's hands. A hard case is somewhat better, but not a lot.

These kinds of cases are for transport, not secure storage.

Curious little hands is my #2 concern. Driving from Pennsylvania to Virginia and West Virginia through the Peoples Republic of Maryland is my #1 concern. With the luggage lock, I can tell the Maryland KGB that my gun is "locked and inaccessible" in my vehicle.

In my home, I have different long term storage.

As I said ... curious little hands. :D

For that purpose, I would use a hard shell case with a couple of prominent external locks.

Optics planet has Uncle Mike's Tactical case for about 60 bucks, padded zippered area for carbine, padded zippered area for a pistol on each side, both zippers are lockable, padded shoulder strap, individual pouches accomodates four magazines and a center storage pouch. A real bargain and quality product....36 or 42 lengths. I have one for each AR and one dedicated to the M&P 15-22.

I consider transport to and from a range and interstate (or even intrastate) transport to be two different circumstances requiring two different solutions. Truly, there is no such thing as "one size fits all" or one case fits all circumstances.

As for home storage, if one cannot afford a safe, it is relatively easy to turn a closet into a semi-secure storage area. Install two dead-bolt assemblies on the door, one about 24 inches from the bottom and the other about 24 inches from the top. Then instead of the usual two hinges, use four anti-removal hinges. These have pins on one half that mate into corresponding holes on the other half. Even if the hinge pins are removed, the door cannot be removed from the frame. Using a solid-core, rather than the usual hollow-core, door adds to the security.

While not a vault by any stretch of the imagination, it will provide a storage area that the kids or casual visitors cannot get into and will cost less than $100, not counting the cost of a solid-core door, which runs $50-$80.

Even if you have one of the cheapie Stack-On sheet metal gun cabinets, putting it in a secure closet makes another level of inaccessibility to your firearms.

I ordered a S&W 15-22 tac soft case. It great except the Mag pouches are for 10 round ones. So the 8 - 25 round mags are in the 2 separate compartments. I need a good ammo box now. It takes about 10 seconds to break down the rifle so it is considered unusable / taken apart in most states. U don't have to worry about lil kids for a few years that o way.
