Unhappy S&W CUSTOMER SERVICE; Some hope after all :)

Greetings from Homer Glen Illinois,
Just joined the forum, as I recently bought a new 15-22 last month to be a partner for my AR-15 platform unit. The 15-22 rifle has been nothing short of a dangerous nightmare right out of the box. (Does S&W reps monitor this forum like other forums I use?). Hope so. Anyway, I have used/rotated through all the ammo recommended by S&W, bought 3 extra new S&W original magazines, and all I get are constant mis-fires, jams, failure to feeds, stove pipes, crushed brass and brass flinging out at 4 to 5 o'clock (when it does fire), and it is always hitting my right arm (I shoot lefty) and a few casings going right into my face. I would think ejection would be straight on at 3 o'clock and fairly consistent at 3 o'clock? At least that is what I see on the web? I also noticed the tops of the magazines are getting a bit chewed up? Called S&W to get a Return Authorization today. I asked them to consider replacement in my complaint letter. I really do not want it serviced? It is not even a month old. What are your experiences with the factory? Seems the logical and most cost effective way to handle this would be to just send me a new unit? Advice? Thoughts? Recommendations? Did I get a lemon? I have heard nothing but rave reviews regarding the 15-22. Warm Regards, John Z.

Definitely not normal -- obviously something isn't right. Rather than try to figure out what is wrong send it back to S&W and let them look at it.

Thank you. Waiting on the pre-paid shipping label and pre-paid insurance from S&W. Absolutely going back! Very disappointed though. Regards, John

did you happen to use a bore snake to clean it before it's first shooting? if so, it is possible that the bore snake caught on the extractor and bent it. i did not have this happen but have read of others doing it. the entire rifle does not need replaced, just the defective part(s). once you get it back from smith, you will very happy with it.

Does not sound like any 15-22 I've ever seen.

Keep in mind that they are mechanical devices and any company can produce a bum one.

Not for nothing, but always contact the company first. If you don't get satisfaction, complain on the forum. Don't get yourself all worked up over something that can easily be rectified at no cost to you. Sure it's aggravating, but assemblers are human, and thus imperfect. S&W has some of the best customer service. Actually, I've found gun manufactures have some of the best customer service, period.

And, welcome aboard.

Remember, if you want them to send you a new rifle instead of repair you will most likely have to pay for the transfer fee, do a background check, and wait period all over again due to new serial #.

I hope you get satisfaction. I understand you are disappointed. I shot mine yesterday for the first time, and I was a bit anxious as to whether it would perform as intended, or that it would have "issues". Fortunately for me, it worked as advertised. One of the reasons I bought a S&W is the good reputation of customer service of S&W; I am confident S&W would / will make it right. Please let us know how S&W resolves this for you.

My 15/22 MOE flings empties, everywhere!!

There isn't a pattern to the ejection cycle that I've found.

I place a queen bed sheet on the ground to the right of the shooting going on. Some are ejected beyond the border, some fall to my feet.

I really want one of the ejection port deflectors offered here but I guess they are still being tested.

Not the norm. My M&P 15-22 is probably my most reliable semi-auto 22 in terms of eating absolutely everything. S&W will take care of you.

Thank you ALL for he helpful comments and encouragement. I am most grateful. Regarding my cleaning, I use J. Dewey products and rods for all my "items"; 4 pistols, 3 rifles. And minty fresh and natural "Frog Lube" from the beginning due to other product "toxicity" issues; I am battling leukemia and I don't need any "outside" chemotherapy entering my system so to speak! I have heard S&W does well in the customer service area. So I am hoping for the best. I already purchased a new 15-22 (a base unit, product # 811033) since I pretty much know I have an obvious lemon here. Plus I was planning on a second one for my son regardless. That should be here today or Monday. It will be interesting firing it and seeing how it performs! I'll also take note of the serial number; hope it ain't close to my bum units SN. I will keep everyone posted. Happy week-end. Warm Regards, John

So sorry to here about your leukemia. God Bless. All the more reason not to get excited over a lemon. They will contact you regarding your options, don't worry. You have to keep your immune system up.

Hang in there, sir. S&W will make it right.

And having lost several family members to cancer, I hope you kick your ailment's butt! I'm wearing a yellow arm band on my wrist for all of those folks whom I know that both won and lost. I hope for you to end up on the WINNING side!

Sorry for you problems most don't have any but like stated it can happen anyone can make a lemon once in a while. Send it back give all pertinent information and ammo used.

As for brass deflection you might want to read here as they make a brass defector. It happens with some lefties with any semi auto. I know why spend money on this, but just a inconvenience of a right handed world.

SWS Brass Deflector is now available

You won't like my reply....

My 15-22 was a blast to shoot, but then one day my son was rapid firing and he had a round go off outside the chamber. Debris flew out and the sound was really off from a normal shot. He kept shooting because you kind of wonder if what just happened actually happened.

When the gun fired OOB again, we knew there was a problem. Then the gun fired without pulling the trigger, and once the back of a shell blew completely off.

After a trip to S&W where they replaced the entire bolt, the gun now has light primer strikes (up to 10 per magazine) and sometimes the bolt hangs OOB and has to be pushed forward with a finger to fire.

It's going back to S&W as soon as I can get through for a return tag.

When I first got mine I was getting a few stovepipes per magazine. Sent it in and I haven't had another in over 1000 rounds. They'll get it working right.

Thank you all for the kind words regarding my leukemia. My battle continues. Finished 4 weeks of chemo several weeks ago and my doc said go do some shoot'in to relax. So went and shot this new 15-22, my AR-15 platform and my various pistols. It does relax me. I am sure you guys and gals agree. I do wear a mask though indoors. Anyway, for this problem 15-22, I used CCI Standard, CCI Mini-mags, CCI AR Tactical, CCI Stinger, Federal 550 bulk, and even tried Remington Yellow Jacket HP's. Used 4 different magazines. Just constant issues. As my relaxation turned to frustration, I decided to stop and send it back. YES, need to watch that immune system. And things of this nature can trigger a flair up. Thanks again for the kind words. I do hope S&W makes good. I am sure they will? Regards, John

Yes, I do not like your reply! Considering this polymer upper and lower probably costs less than 10 bucks to manufacture, I am sure hoping they just send me a whole new unit. Cannot see wasting labor time trying to fix a seriously messed up right out of the box unit? Ah, feel my white blood cells rising. Must relax! Regards, John

They won't replace the lower it's a "firearm" and there isn't likely anything wrong with it. They will check the ejection system and make sure it's set correctly, if not they will correct it. The Ejector is mounted into the chamber block and if need be they can replace the chamber block and/or ejector arm.

Stay calm, S&W will make it right, and keep fighting the good fight!

Thank you. Will do. In carefully reading their warranty, they can elect to replace the lower at their discretion, but it must go through the FFL process like a new unit. Shows on page 32 of the manual. Yes I agree, surely the ejection system is malfunctioning. BTW, I find this forum to be one of the best I have ever seen. Others that I belong to always have smart as_ remarks from trolls and trouble makers, that seem to be tolerated by the moderators. I only see real human beings here. What a nice change Some forums I have just quit. It is a shame since so much knowledge can be gained from a good forum community. KUDOS to this FORUM and all the super fine folks I have met on-line thus far.

this is one of the best forums around...and there are the smart donkeys, but they reserve that for the lounge threads or if the communication warrants, and it is usually known that a smart donkey comment will be made by someone, and usually a disappointment if said comment is not.

back to the topic...mine ejects all over the place too...the only thing i have had trouble with is remington thunderbolts that are about 25 or 30 yrs old

Hope S&W can solve your problem. As for them replacing the entire gun, I hate to say, but that is pretty unlikely. The FFL transfers involved are too costly and time consuming, so unless your gun has a major issue with the actual body of the lower itself, they likely won't replace it. I would personally recommend against a full replacement anyways because the more you mess with serial number transfers the higher your risk is for ending up with a gun you do not physically possess being registered to your name. It sounds far fetched, but I have had this happen to me and heard of it happening to a few others too.

The good news is that it is extremely unlikely that the body of the lower is responsible for the problems you are experiencing. Itsounds like and extractor arm or bolt carrier group issue. S&W has excellent troubleshooting and customer service. Short of giving you a new lower receiver, they can (and will) replace every other part on the gun that has any issue. I'm sure that when you get your gun back from S&W, it will be fully functioning. If it isn't then you can keep sending it in until it is.

I know the process of sending in a gun can be aggravating. Especially if the gun is brand new. The silver lining is that S&W will confirm that your entire gun functions, it won't cost you a thing, and S&W have even been known to throw some free stuff in with your returned gun package (extra magazines, t-shirts, etc.). S&W has outstanding customer service, as many here have said.

Be sure to let us know how everything goes for you. I hope everything works out in the end so that you can love your gun as much as the rest of us love ours .

John,

Not to toot my own horn, but this is the greatest "in-stock ammo" thread of all time, lol.

OFFICIAL (IN STOCK) 22LR AMMO THREAD

This site GunBot find 22lr ammo in stock is an excellent source for in-stock ammo and magazines.

Here is the weapon's parts breakdown. http://smith-wessonforum.com/attachm...6&d=1364433537

Excellent advice. Thank you so much. I agree, it must be the upper, no question. I can see the issues with Serial number transfers etc. Especially in a locale like mine, I cannot take any chances! I will keep everyone posted. It is all boxed up waiting for the labels. In the meantime, I am waiting to pick up the one I ordered for my son. A base unit #811033. I'll be firing that with him as soon as it gets here. What are the chances that I'll have another "lemon"
I highly doubt it..................It is good to know that S&W has such a strong reputation. One of the reasons why I chose this over the others. I am optimistic, and everyone here has helped me tremendously! Warm Regards, John

Here is the trouble maker before being boxed up. Behind it is my AR-15 platform with Aimpoint Red Dot and Magnifier. It looks as though it is mounted on the 15-22. I have both a Sig Sauer CP1 and a BugBlaster for the 15-22, if I can get one that works

Finally, Here is what keeps me busy during chemo downtime. To test everyone here. Can anyone tell me what make and model this car is, and when was the last time you saw one? Hint; It was known in the 80's as a "basket" car. They are pretty much all gone/scrap now. Still re-building this one. John

Pretty close. At the time, it was called a "Golf" across the pond, but VW decided to use the french word for convertible; "Cabriolet" here in the States. Only about 400 are still known to exist in the US. VW did not use any rust proofing so most here rotted away very quickly. Found this one sitting is a yard, under a tree, for 15 years, covered in algae and moss. The conditions including the moss kinda preserved it. There is not a speck of rust inside, outside or underneath. Weird. Regards, John

I knew what it was but Dart beat me to it!

Also there is a "Notable Thread Index" Sticky at the top of these forums and inside is a gold mine of info, including all of my Video Series that I shot way back when... Cleaning, Breakdown, Upgrades etc!

Yes, thank you. It was the first thing I did when I received my "busted" 15-22

That's very surprising. Must have been "magic" moss.

Thanks SpicyTunaRoll. Your making me hungry. Yes, will fight the good fight. And shoot a lot. Got a few thousand rounds piled up waiting for a 15-22 that works
As I mentioned before, as my bum unit gets a look by S&W, my son's will be here hopefully tomorrow. I'll wipe it down, frog-lube it a bit, and hit the range. Plus it is doctors orders!
Warm Regards, John

Recommend when U get the firearm back from repair that U go to the range and learn to shoot offhand. Thing with an semi automatic, it can eject high energy projectiles if it malfunctions for any one of several reasons. Shooting Right handed gets UR parts out of the way more so. With a few trips to the range U can become accustomed to it and do better each time. When I had my old place I could fire my 1911 offhand driving down my ditch in the back timberland and never have to search for the casings. All would be in the bed of the pickup box. I got perty good offhand while moving past targets by the bank of the ditch. I had bulldozed the 1/8 mile long bank and enjoyed many intrigues in that thar area. Maybe 60,000 rounds into that bank, sometimes from the Combine when moving it to the other place.

Thank you; excellent advice. I do shoot lefty and righty with my 3 pistols. I am spoiled by my lefty RRA AR-15 platform unit. But I plan on trying to get accustomed to shooting righty with the 15-22. BTW, still waiting for paperwork from S&W to send this bum unit back! Getting a little frustrated on how long it takes to get this paperwork? Hope to get it soon?
Warm Regards, John

i'm surprised it is taking this long for the label. mine had to go back also. i called them on a thursday, they suggested that i fill out the form online and i had an email with the label early the next morning. i'm not sure if they automatically generate the email or someone has to process it.

Thanks. If not here today, I will call them. I sent an e-mail, however they "auto replied" that they are backed up 5 business days! Regards, John

Well, it has been over a week since I first contacted S&W to arrange shipping back my lemon 15-22 MOE. Nothing so far from them regarding shipping labels as promised. Called them today and they indicated they are very backed up. I should have by next week! So, two weeks wait just to get paperwork to return the lemon. Wonder how long it will take to get looked at and repaired? In the meantime, my son's base unit arrived, and I quickly readied it for the range. It fired perfectly. No more brass shooting out at 4-5 o'clock or straight into my face. No misfires, no stovepipes, nothing. So, now I hope they fix my MOE in a timely manner? Here is the new unit along side big brother. Regards, John

At this point nothing from S&W to get this rifle returned. If anyone has any suggestions, please advise. They do not respond to e-mails and after waiting on the phone for 45 minutes, the answer I get is that the paperwork is in the mail? I get USPS mail from all over the country in 1 to 2 business days. So lemon gun sits. Cannot wait to see how long it sits at S&W; (if it ever gets there). This thing did not shoot properly right out of the box. Of course gun shop will not accept return. And credit card will not allow any recourse (refund) because it is a firearm. My return number is 1617016 issued 8/16, if anyone here has a string to pull! Will keep you posted. Warm Regards, John
