Bipod for the 15-22?

This is my first post here on the S&W forums, so hi all!

A couple of weeks ago I purchased my 15-22 (standard model), and I've been looking at different accessories I'd like to get. It's pretty mind boggling about what all is available, the 15-22 is my first foray into the AR-15 platform.

So, I'm a plinker, and looking for a bipod to have some alternate shooting fun with my new rifle. Ideally, I'd like one that swivels (I like to shoot soda cans, which like to move alot when hit), and is of course tall enough to clear the 25rd mags. An adjustable height bi-pod would be nice as well, so I could potentially use it as both a bench rest, or to go prone on my deck.

In the future, I also plan on getting a 50rd mag, but I'm not sure how much bigger those are than the standard 25 rd ones, so that's something to consider also.

Price range? I don't know much about bi-pods, but I'd like to spend less than $150 if possible.

Harris with a roto-pod? Not sure on the combined cost in the US, but it's bound to be a lot less than here in the UK!

Look at a Harris in the 9"-13" height. That keeps a 25-rounder up off the bench when shooting from one.

Welcome to the Forum.

The Harris swivel (S-BRM) does not work as I think you are envisioning for bouncing cans around. The swivel is for cant to deal with unlevel surfaces. It's not something you can swing the rifle left and right for aiming purposes, though there is a rail adapter http://www.harrisbipods.com

If you want a reasonably steady platform with flexible movement from the bench or prone, you might consider a broomstick style foregrip, using your grip for elevation adjustments. Use a short 10rd mag. You'll be able to steady the rifle as well as it shoots with bulk pack ammo.

My personal opinion is that it's blasphemous to hang a bipod from the bottom rail of this great lightweight rifle... but that's just me. :D

Yep, important point to note, that's why I suggested the Rota-Pod as it'll give you a true swivel (traversing) function and is a picatinny adaptor for the Harris too, so you can hang the bipod off the 15-22 rail. See http://www.harrisbipods.com/RBA.html

That being said, I'd agree that the 15-22 is not an ideal rifle for using with a bipod: it's not particularly a tack-driver as far as accuracy goes, and unless you decouple the hand guard (removing the end cap goes some way to floating the barrel), you're likely to find that leaning into a bipod on the bottom rail will shift your POA somewhat...

I have an AFG & VFG on my 15-22 (greedy I know!), and keep the bipod on my CZ :)

If you want to hit something moving yet still increase your stability, I highly recommend the VTAC sling. With just a simple tug on a strap, the sling tightens up & provides a great brace for freehand shooting. In essence, it gives you something to push against, which I find almost as nice as resting the gun against something... yet gives you complete mobility for quick shots.
 
I have a good quality bipod for my Black rifles.

However, the one I use the most is a fairly tall cradle type set of shooting sticks that can become a actual tripod.

(It's a Cabelas' three in one tripod. It works between about 24" to 62")

If I'm not sitting at a bench, I usually shoot in a sitting position, that's where the taller bi/tripod really shines.

I used it recently when I was deer hunting with a crossbow.

The Fab Defense T-Pod G2 will do almost everything you ask and it acts as a vertical grip as well. It will clear the 25 Rd. Mag when shooting, but the stock of the rifle wont rest on the ground with the mag in place it will be one or two inches short and will instead rest on the mag.
It is rather large for a vertical grip as well. But it is well built and very solid to say the least.

Thanks for all the input guys. I didn't realize that 'swivel' and 'rotating' meant two different things for a bi-pod.

I realize that a bi-pod on a 22lr firearm isn't what most people would consider ideal or necessary. But the thing is, I've owned only a handful of rifles, two .22's (3 including my new M&P 15-22), and a Winchester 94 that shoots 44 mags. All other firearms I've ever owned have been varying shotguns for clay pigeon shooting.

None of my rifles have ever been customized in any way, so I'm just wanting to try some stuff out and have some fun with different shooting techniques.
