Default AFG2 placement

When I bought my 15-22, I installed the AFG2 at the rear position. However, to mount the rifle on my Lead Sled SOLO, I had to move it forward. Looking through the pictures thread, I see different people mount it at different positions along the rail. Is this a matter of arm length, shooting posture, or is there an advantage to one position over another? I really can't tell much difference between locations. BTW, the SOLO isn't adjustable for length, so the forward position makes for a more stable mounting.

As with most accessories -- ultimately it's where it fits and where it feels good to you. On .223 platform ARs there are some that will say holding the rifle further out enables you to stabilize the rifle better. That's fine if you can do it. If you can't reach that far because of physical limitations it makes no sense to force it. Some people shoot fine holding the magwell -- it's all personal preference.

I have an AFG2 on all of my AR platform rifles (.22, 9mm and .223). It took a bit getting use to but it works for me having it far out on the rail - it now feels weird to me to hold my grip close in.

Besides that -- I think it just makes the AR look more bad ***. In my state (the uninformed voter) thinks adding a bit of plastic on a rifle makes it more lethal.

If you have an AR, try the distance out on your AR platform... then put it as close to that position as possible on the 15-22.

The reasoning is, the AFG2 is designed to provide the user with a more stable grip of their platform during maneuvering and firing of the weapon. It's also to assist with the grip as you "Drive" the weapon forward when targeting.

To be honest... It's really unnecessary on the 15-22 because stability is not an issue as their is little to no recoil when firing the weapon. I know a lot of people like the look of it (myself included)... so therefore it's purely whatever makes you comfortable and provides you with arm positioning that will produce the best results for you.

The reason I say fire your AR and then place it is that you will learn with the recoil of the AR what is comfortable for you and where you will want to place it.

Decide where you want to put it for the way you shoot.

I mounted mine back at first, then mounted it out forward. However, it was most comfortable when I mounted it in my parts drawer.

I only shoot offhand and mounted the AFG close in. Having my arm further extended for long shooting sessions with the 1522 is more fatiguing and the AFG provides a more comfortable wrist angle than the handguard for me.

I'm experimenting with Magpul's Hand Stop on my AR but will likely go back to AFG.

I have them mounted on all my ARs, so I put one on my 15-22 as well. Even though I have various length barrels and handguards on the various caliber rifles, I want them all to "feel" the same when I picked them up. Therefore they all have the same stock and pistol grip as well as the AFG2. I placed mine on the shortest handguard first, and found a comfortable position. I mimicked that position fairly closely on the rest of them. So, it's not all the way out at the end, but there's enough room to grip the magwell if I wanted to.

This is really going to depend on how you shoot. The farther out you go the more stable the rifle becomes but the farther out you go the less stable you are. It will be easier to hold the rifle for a longer period of time when your grip is in close and your body can also help in supporting its weight so my vote is in close.

Mine are mounted in close. I can't do that whole Chris Costa tactical driving the gun
scenario, that just causes arm pain due to tendonitis and carpel tunnel syndrome!

When they are in close, for me, it makes it easier to pivot the rifle from a fire position
to a muzzle down, the transitioning is smooth for me using the AFG towards the rear.

Default AFG2 placement

I understand the responses... And most are basing their positioning on the AFG2 on an AR-15... But remember, this is a 15-22... So technically you could mount the thing on the top of your rail just in front of the rear sights if you want. It's not going to make much difference other than the comfort of your hand on the rail. It offers no real stability benefits on a .22lr recreational weapon. Much the same adding a vertical grip would.... Unless you're six. Mounting them on an AR... That's another story. That's why I suggested finding your comfort zone on your actual AR, then duplicate it on the 15-22... It will assist in your training.
