Picked up my new M&P 15-22 from my LGS the other day. Had to get the compliant fixed stock model as I live in CT. Gave me one in a factory taped box. Also bought 2 of the short 10 round magazines to go with it. Opened the box and it had one of the long 10 round marked magazines in it but noticed there was no pull down button on it. I figured someone at the factory forgot to put it on so I e-mailed S&W customer service to see if they would send me one. Got a reply from S&W stating that the compliant magazines do not come with the buttons. Found this strange as the 2 short 10 round magazines have them.

It is kinda strange but that's the way it is. I got some of the Raveneye buttons and split my long mags, installed the buttons, and glued them back together. You have to be somewhat careful when splitting them, but all of mine came apart fine. I crazy glued them back together and then clamped them for a little while. I've got 4 of them, each one probably has a few hundred rounds through it since I installed the buttons and zero problems. The buttons can be had here...Raven Eye Custom - M&P15-22 Upgrades

cxwrench, why did you split the magazines to install the buttons? Wouldn't they fit thru the normal hole that was there? I'm just curious before I buy some buttons.

You can also just go to the hardware store and buy a handful of small, plastic nuts and bolts. They work just as well as any of the aftermarket parts, and you don't have to do any disassembly to get them on.

The 10 round long magazine has the pin inside to limit it to 10 rounds. Yes, you can insert a button from the end, but isn't the pin between the button & the rounds?

This works for those converting the 10 round long magazine to hold 25 rounds but will not work here, will it? With the conversion, you remove the pin.

Good point. I forgot you can't take them apart to clean them. Stupid law... I have the shorties.

Correct. You cannot without removing the pin permanently, use the load assist buttons on the 10 round long magazines.

They didn't forget to put the load assist buttons in the 10 round long magazines, they do not install them. Only on the 25 & 10 round short magazines.

No, I put the pin back in easily. I've got 10 round long mags w/ buttons and the pins to limit them to 10 rounds.

We are talking about modifying without breaking open the magazine. I don't think you can insert a button without first removing the pin. In that case, it requires breaking open the mag... which I would never do.

I just re-read your post. Why would you break the magazine apart? The way I did mine was punch the pin out with a long screwdriver without damaging the magazine or putting holes in it or breaking it apart.

I live in CA, I have to keep them limited to 10 rounds so I had to keep the pins. Since you can't drop the follower past the pin w/o either doing what you're suggesting OR splitting the mag and then putting it all back together, that's what I had to do.

Any problem loading the 10th round? If I lived in a communist state, I would do this as opposed to splitting the magazine.

If I ever have a problem w/ any of mine I'll post about it, but they've been fine for a while now. Of course I'm not doing any 'tactical' reloads and dropping empty mags, but so far, so good.

Just curious if adding the bolt takes up enough space to cause trouble loading the 10th round? Seems like it is about the size of a 22, & wondered if this option only allowed you to load 9 rounds?

Someone explain it to me, because I don't see how sticking something through that hole would diminish capacity.
