Im thinking of cutting the factory handguard down to about 4". Is there any issues you guys can see in doing so? Other than Id have to buy a tacticool22 barrel nut and new handguard to make a longer handguard.
I guess cutting the barrel is out up here on Canada. So to save weight, is there any lighter stock I could switch to?
My end goal is under 5lbs. I know it would be simple of I could cut the barrel. I might even get close to 4lbs but again, unless I buy a already cut barrel. This isnt a legal option.
What do your guns weight in at??????? Optics on and off!

To answer the original question, there's no problem in cutting down the factory guard. I've done it with two. Matter of fact, I have one of them here I don't need if you'd rather have a "spare" to play around with. I bought one when I decide to convert mine to an SBR.

There are only a couple places you can cut it in order to not have an open semi-circle at the end. So, you may not get the exact length you want, but will have to compromise.

Definitely not going to say it's a weight saver...but it's easy to do. Cutting my barrel down to 4.5" however, is a whole 'nother story as far as weight reduction goes. :D

Thank you very much for answering the handguard question!
I also tried the crayon trick. The fire safe turned out great.
The m&p logo not so much. Ill pick it out and try again.
Im really suprized that there isnt one gunsmith turning barrels for these guns.
What are the laws in the US about barrels anyway?
Up here they have to be longer than 110mm and to make non restricted, then gun must not be shorter than 660mm. However the 15-22 is restricted because its an AR veriant. Thus we cant cut the barrel shorter than 18.5" and if we want a shorter barrel. It must be a manufactured barrel. We can flute and thread barrels of any length.
Gurr silly laws

If you want a barrel less than 16" or have an OAL of less than 26", you have to file the paperwork and pay a $200 (one-time) tax.

Depending in how you do it, the approval could take anywhere from a month to a year.
