NEWS JUST IN!
I think I have just found out that Scott Volquartsen of Volquartsen is about to unveil a brand new carbon fibre barrel for our beloved 15-22's....shot show 2018 I think is where...do not know yet when. Nothing on the VQ website yet.
Wow....and as far as I am aware....we still have a contact in the UK that deals with VQ....so we won't be ITAR controlled.
Anyone with any info get back to confirm....and the first one to get and install and shoot one....a video review please

Cool? What does a carbon fiber barrel provide that the oem steel one doesn’t? Accuracy, weight, cool factor? Options are great for those that desire such items but my 15-22 is a plinker and I don’t think any accessory or mod would change that for me.

Accuracy, weight, cool factor...yep. Plus it gives longevity to the rifle....I highly doubt I will be able to shoot out the 15-22 barrel in my lifetime, but my children will be able to benefit from it
It is nice that there are options as you say....and good quality options at that. For those of us who don't abide in the land of the free, where AR's are readily available...and .22lr are our main go to rifles, this brings joy to my heart. I use mine in competitions and have tried everything to squeeze out every bit of accuracy, if this barrel helps or assists in doing that, then as Jean luc Picard would say......'make it so'

I shoot Rimfire Challenge with my 15-22's and a lightweight barrel would be a welcome addition. The light weight tricked out 10-22s I shoot against swing much faster/easier. I definitely want a light, accurate, cool CF barrel. I sent an e-mail to VQ. We'll see.

Glad to see the addition of aftermarket parts for the 15-22, now if they would just make a better firing pin. Only getting about 15-20k before failure.......

Tacticool 22 has you covered, new pins in the pipeline I think. Failing that there is a company this side of the pond who are making pins for the 15-22. Not sure if they are better...but they are available.

There's always one and it's usually that guy. Also, there is nothing to stop you swapping your old barrel back in if you encounter any issues. Plus I highly doubt a company of Volquartsen's repertoire, who are known for their top quality barrels, would jeopardise that by building an inferior quality, problem prone product..... unless they are in cahoots with appleseed....dum da dum dum
I for one have already contacted the uk dealer with Scott to express my interest. What was that internet meme. Well that's me

Rumor confirmed. They're supposed to start shipping mid Feb.
16.5" barrel with the usual 1/2-28 threaded muzzle. I have one on order.

Yippie, have just had confirmation as well....also just had a chat with my man over here and he is in talks with Scott, regarding import licence and is willing to go for the extra licence if they will not comply with his already agreed 10/22 barrel import licence...sounds complicated but he is keen, just waiting to hear what Scott replies....I also have put in an order....don't tell the wife
Nice to know we wont be left behind due to ITAR.

I totally get it for those who are into competitions and want a lighter barrel to swing around, but as for the idea of less wear and longer life I am a bit confused.
Has anyone actually had or heard of problems with the 15-22 barrel wearing out?

I haven't and don't expect to. That wasn't a consideration for me ordering the barrel. For Rimfire Challenge I want a rifle that swings better. A pound plus lighter barrel is a big difference and I need all the help I can get.

Bassnuts is always looking to stir the pot pay no attention to him. I have said all along the interceptors work best with my slide fire then somehow after arguing other brands he comes to the decision all on his own.... what a mystery. Lol
So how do I order a barrel and whats the cost?

Tom: I'm not worried about warranty ,I have never sent anything back for Warranty and never will!, I have 4 15-22's
That comment was directed to those who are always complaining and saying "send it back"

I just ordered one this am. There was no note of out of stock or back order on the sale listing on the VQ website nor on the order confirmation email I received after completing the order. Hope they ship soon.

My actual sales order/invoice? (the attachment you download from their order confirmation e-mail) says: "*No payment captured. Item currently backordered. de". In the e-mails we exchanged before I ordered I was told they planned to start shipping mid Feb. One loooong month from now.
Maybe not what you wanted to hear but I hope it helps.

Seeing as though this will be a long haul for us this side of the pond, import licences and such, it will be closer to 6-12 months before they arrive over here, plus the obligatory price hike. (speaking of which what did they not charge your CC to the amount of?)
I will be expecting a detailed review with sexy pics after you have installed and tried it out Whet my appetite.

I had read your post before placing my order and was fully (and still am) expecting a back order situation. It very well may be wishful thinking on my part that they will ship soon. However I was just stating that I didn’t get the back order notice on any of the correspondence and they did fully charge my card.
I will report back if and when I get a notice of shipping.

Interesting. My CC was showing a $346 "pending" charge which isn't there now. They had said I wouldn't be charged until the barrel ships and the invoice reflects that.
FWIW I did specify i wanted a "sport" chamber.

Will do Ghost. I just installed the new aluminum fore grip from tacticool22 and a gazelle 3G trigger. I am anxious to have the whole combo together with the new barrel. There do seem to be a few pics up on the VQ website that I don’t recall being there a few days ago.
Tomcat, I didn’t know you could request a specific chamber. Do you know what the standard chamber they supply?
Also does anyone know what diameter these barrels are?

I'm assuming it's like their other barrels and it's a match chamber and you can specify you want a sport chamber. They seem to kinda keep that a secret. It's also THEIR "proprietary" sport chamber and not as big as what is usually called a sport chamber.
I called and asked after ordering the barrel and was told the barrel is .750" OD.

What is the difference between the match and sport, in real terms?

Bigger diameter. Easier for rds to chamber and they get free of the chamber easier so they eject more vigorously. The sport chamber makes for a less finicky more reliable gun. It's what you want for things like rimfire challenge, steel challenge, bowling pins etc.

So the match chamber is more tight fitting and harder to eject, for more deliberate accurate, slow firing?
Is this barrel going to be a big difference accuracy wise? more so with a match chamber? would a sport chamber offer less accuracy but more reliability? Learning new stuff here....I'm all spongy

Good grief... my first thought is "gimme a break!!!".
But then... If you want to shoot expensive match ammo for bench rested groups the match chamber with the ammo it likes best should give best accuracy. Will it in a polymer gun? I dunno.
What I do know is I have (pistols) Ruger 22/45 Lites and and 2 VQ Scorpions. The VQ's are a 6" with a match chamber and a 4 1/2" with a sport chamber. I started shooting the pistol part of rimfire challenge with the Rugers and have switched to the 4 1/2" VQ.
The Rugers have the biggest chamber. They also shoot the worst. With the ammo I usually shoot I'm not sure I can find an accuracy difference between the sport and match chambered VQ LLV (Scorpion) uppers. I can tell a difference in how they run. I have to run different recoil springs to get reliable function. The Rugers with their looser chambers get the stiffest recoil springs. The sport chambered VQ a step lighter and the match chambered VQ upper gets one a further step lighter. You walk a fine line on the pistols getting their bolts to run full cycle distance but not beating up the bolt stop and frame. The tighter chambers are more finicky. If I wanted to use the 6" match chambered VQ upper for speed shooting like steel matches I'd ream the chamber.
How will the trick 15-22 VQ barrel work? We'll see. I certainly expect they'll shoot better but their lighter weight was what I'm after.

Well I am back on here again after a year or two (former photoracer but can't use that now as my email has changed).
I actually ordered the new CF barrel from Scott about the middle of last month. I think the ordering info was on their Facebook account and was put there my one of my fellow competitors/gunsmiths who is also a member of the Rimfire Raceguns forum on Facebook. They don't have a confirmed shipping date as of yet but at least I do have a confirmed order. Been shooting my race 10/22s in RC and SC almost 100% except for the PSA Rimfire Shootout which requires mag changes and no 10/22 can beat a 15-22 in the area of fast mag changes. The VQ barrel kit comes complete with a set of Tacticool22's barrel tools as part of the package also (and you can't delete it either if you are like me and already have them). Barrel price is about $336 which is in the same ballpark as other VQ CF barrels like the VQ Ultralite on my 10/22.
My 15-22 already has a Taccom CF handguard and a Magpul Fixed Carbine stock to reduce weight.

I have one on order too. Anyone have any idea of how we will install these without crushing the Carbon fiber shroud? Maybe the CF is strong enough to be clamped in a vise without harm? Anyway, I’m sure they will come with instructions.

If you have never taken the front of the upper off, here is a short version. The handguard is held in by kind of nut way down inside the handguard that is actually the barrel nut also. That is what the Tacticool22 tool is for and the kit should come with a pair of aluminum vise plates for your vise. Slide the tool in and then clamp the end of the barrel and turn the tool to loosen everything. Should come with a replacement barrel nut but not sure as VQ may expect people just to reassemble the rifle with the stock on back on. Anyway VQ CF barrels have stainless steel ends so the vise panels should go around that fine. Reassemble and use the tool to clamp the barrel back in. If it does not include the Tacticool22 barrel nut and you want to put a different handguard on it now would be the time to buy that. It installs differently than the stock S&W barrel nut.
Race AR22.jpg
This shows my 15-22 (top) and my AR-22 with the same Taccom CF handguard thanks to the Tacticool22 barrel nut adapter.

NEWS JUST IN!
Ok cool so there is enough steel exposed at the end to clamp. I have taken the existing barrel off to mount a new tacticool22 aluminum hand guard. I just didn’t know that the VQ barrel had some steel to grip to replace the nut. Thanks for the info.

Volquartsen just called to verify my CC info. Seems they're about to ship barrels. All will have sport chambers.

It's here, it's installed. VQ barrel weighs 14.4 oz, S&W 16" threaded barrel weighs 1 lb 9.8 oz. Ejector sits exactly where it should. Barrel sticks out of my Taccom CF forend 1/2" further. 1 1/2" vs 1". You have to really look to notice anything's different. Guys I shoot with are far more likely to notice the three shiny SS button head screws (had one black oxide button head) now holding my CF forend tube on than the barrel.
The weight difference is very obvious. Just swinging up onto target from low ready there's no doubt which gun I have in hand. I have a second duplicate 15-22 as a back-up gun (only difference is the barrel) so I can do a real back to back comparison. Shooting it is next. Need to make time to get to the range...

That means you'll probably shoot one first. Was grabbing my gear to head to the range and realized it's tied up with set-up for our big deal yearly USPSA match this weekend so it will be next week for me. Will be interesting to shoot some groups and then see what the shot timer says across a couple steel stages.

Mine arrived yesterday. I will try to install it tonight or tomorrow.
I had asked this earlier in the thread and after looking at the barrel still have the same question. How do you clamp the barrel to tighten the barrel nut? There is not enough steel showing to clamp onto. I’m a bit worried about putting the carbon fiber section in the aluminum vise jaws and cinching down on it enough to get the nut tight. I know with the stock steel barrel, I had to tighten the vise pretty firmly to keep the barrel from spinning in the jaws. I don’t want to crush the carbon fiber outer sleeve, or break it loose from the inner steel liner. Maybe I’m just being a little too concerned about this. I called VQ to ask them but the their tech guy was out today.
Tom, how did you hold your barrel to tighten it?

Just curious;
What does the barrel ship with?
Does it come with the barrel nut tool?
Do you use the OEM barrel nut or does it come with it's own?
Is there a suggested torque for the barrel nut?
I am assuming that the barrel comes with the barrel extension and ejector looking at the pictures.

Barrel blocks to hold the barrel at the muzzle so I was on the steel end and the carbon fiber. Two pieces of pine 2x4 clamped together then I drilled a 23/32" hole down the "joint line". About the right crush with soft pine on a 3/4" barrel. I can't see any other way.
I did the same thing but drilled a 5/8" hole when I made blocks for the S&W barrel.

Yes a tool that fits the OE barrel nut is included.
OE barrel nut or the Tacticool adapter. The VQ barrel has the same threads as the original.
Only torque spec I've ever seen or heard is "about that tight".
What you get from VQ is a direct replacement assy for the S&W barrel you removed.

Thanks Tom that seems like a logical approach. I will give that a shot.

I got the barrel mounted and was able to take it out to the range this weekend and punched some paper and a little steel. The light weight barrel really changes the feel. The gun points and swings quickly. I really like the way the gun handles shooting steel.
Conditions were not great for testing accuracy on paper. The wind was gusty blowing 10 to 15 MPH from a crossing direction. Despite the conditions, I was able to print some nice groups at 50 yards. Using CCI AR Tactical, I shot a few 10-shot groups that measured an inch or slightly less. Given the strong gusty winds and the fact that the reticle on my 7X scope covered the aiming point, I was pleased with the performance.
So far I’m really liking this barrel[emoji106
