First question . Do you get better performance shooting hollow point or round nose ? I shot Aguila hollow points, SK hollow points point at my first range visit . No problem . Then I tried Federal Range , Winchester white box, 36gr hollow points . Multiple fail to eject . Maybe , I need to lube better ? Thoughts and opinions respected .

15-22 runs well when everything is fine, but is finicky on ammo. I use nothing but 40 grain, round nose, Aguila or Blazer high velocity. Try different loads and see what works.

You MUST keep the 15-22 clean and oiled. Unlike many 22 rifles, you have to clean every time you shoot. Get a dental pick and pay attention to the recessed bolt face where the cartridge rim fits.

My 15-22 eats everything I feed it with zero malfunctions. HP, SP, HV, SV, Fed, Win, SK, Rem, Wolf, CCI, it doesn't matter. It goes BANG every time and functions perfectly. .22 rimfire is known for being dirty ammo, some brands are dirtier than others. Keep you rifle clean and PROPERLY lubed.

Agree about keeping the bolt face clean. I have had my 15-22 for 8 years. Never a problem. My personal opinion is that 40 grain round nose seem to be a little more accurate at 50 yards. I have a bi-pod that I attach and a Nikon P-22 scope and shoot mostly 50 yards. Try to buy mini-mags whenever I can find them.

Could be ammo related. Wwb isnt primo stuff. I call it malfunction drill practice.
I dont have many malfunctions but I polish the action internals, and run it dripping with Mobil1

What's the best defense pistol?

Mine is consistent with all types of rounds thus far though I mostly go with CCI Tactical. Seems to be noticeably cleaner than others. Once in a blue moon I go with the CCI polymer stuff.

Depends on what you're shooting I suppose, though growing up 50 years ago we used round nose for pretty much everything and it got the job done.

My 15-22s are intended for family use in an urban SHTF situation, and velocity is the prime requirement. A CCI Stinger or Aguila Interceptor is ideal for mass incursions. A single round of hypervel .22LR to the chest can incapacitate or kill, and a double or triple tap against non-armored insurgents is highly effective.

John Wooters used to say, "Go ask the gun". Seems that's what you did, as your gun prefers round nose ammo.

My 3 step process for fussy .22 autoloaders:
1. clean it
2. lube it
3. run it with Minimags

Both the target and varmint Minimags have proven to be the most accurate, cleanest and best functioning .22 round for me. The CCI Tactical seems to match that but I haven't shot that much of it yet. The CCI Stingers don't group like the Minimags but function reliably and are MUCH more effective on bigger critters like raccoons and woodchucks.

Federal bulk .22s also function reliably in most of my rimfires, but again they don't group like the Minimags.

the doctors don't like hollow point slugs or "dumb dumb" ammo.
