From a bench with scope at 50 yards? Looks like I am getting 1" with Aguila Super Extra 40gr. A bit larger with CCI SV 40 gr and much larger with SK Rifle Match! The SK was a real shocker. I thought I would be getting .75" at 50 yards I will compare the Aguil to Norma TAC 22 and CCI 40 gr MM. What size groups are y'all getting from the bench at 50 yds. I was using a Caldwell Deadshot from bag and rear squeeze bag. I have a Caldwell Rock BR mechanical rest but I find it a bit of a pain to tote about and diddling with setting it up so I usually use the bag.

Presently I am shooting a Winchester 52 Sporter made in 1935 with a Leupold VXII 3-9 scope. The best ammo in this rifle is Norma Match Target, which shoots 1/2 to 3/4 inch 5 shot groups at 50 yards. My 25 yd groups have been 3/8 inch, 10 shots. Wolf Match Target groups are slightly larger. CCI Stnd Velocity does not give any groups to be proud of, but it is ok for just plinking. The Norma Match Target performs mush better than their Tac 22 loadings.

I get pretty much consistent 1"-1.5" at 50 yds. off the bench (using the same Caldwell rest you have) with CCI Mini Mags. But also use a scope. I haven't shot a whole bunch off different ammo for group testing purposes because I mostly use my 15-22 for fun, (plinking, spinners, steel plates, dueling tree, etc.). I have other .22lr's for bullseye shooting. I think 1" or a tad bigger group at 50 yds. with that rifle is pretty acceptable.

I forgot to add that this is for 10 shot groups. I have two very good .22lr target rifles but I was interested in determining what the 15-22 would do at 50 yards and maybe at 100 later if I found medium priced ammo it liked to make it worth while. I understand the SK Rifle Match was the only match grade ammo I shot. I have I have some CenterX and Eley Match but not going to waste these on a 15-22. The Sk shot the worse of all followed by the CCI SV and the Aguila being the best thus far. I was hoping for a consistent .75" 10 shot group with somethin no more expensive than SK, Wolf, Ely Club, ect. Aguila can be bought for .05 cents a round and thus far it is the "winner".

If my 1522 shoots 10 rounds into an inch, I'm having a pretty good day.
I've never expected match accuracy from it. It's a fun gun, not a target gun, that for me, has kilt more than it's share of vermin and bottles and cans.

This is an apples to oranges comparison with only one point to be made-----if barrel temperature is even a consideration with .22 Long Rifle.

I have a Colt "Sporter" (AR-15, 223), with a Trijicon ACOG, fired from a BR Pivot (That which Caldwell either bought the patents for, or just plain copied---excepting the tolerances for the center pivot---Caldwell's is looser/easier to assemble/disassemble, with no noticeable effect except for shots beyond 300 yards.

To the point: This outfit makes for 3/8" groups at 100 yards---from a cold barrel---kept cold by f i r i n g----s l o w l y!! Increasing the rate of firing opens up the groups to soup can size----right now!

Thanks guys for the comments. I realize the 15-22 isn't a target rifle. I have three target rifles which are very accurate. The 15-22 is basically a trainer for my AR for manual of arms. I thought it unusually accurate at 25 yds (one hole round groups) but I knew the test of accuracy would show at 50 yards. I was a bit surprised that it shot worse with match ammo than higher grade non-match-ammo. I will compare the Aguila with the Norma TAC and CCI 40gr MM. One inch at 50 yards for 10 rounds is certainty acceptable for a non-match rifle.

I am unsure of the mechanics involved but it is not unusual for standard velocity ammo and match ammo to perform sub par in semi-auto rifles. Perhaps because these rifles are designed for use with higher velocity ammo whose increased force on the bolt/feeding mechanism yields more consistent results.

I shot this group at 50 yards with a stock Ruger 10/22, cheap Simmons 3-9x scope, using bulk Federal Automatch 40gr on a simple Caldwell bench rest.

Not too shabby for everything being basic and nothing custom or match grade.

Like you mine is a "trainer" or fun gun for the "Boys"..... so most shooting is fast double and triple taps....... easy to keep 20-30 rounds in a fist size group at 50yds.

Can't recall the last time I benched it........ that said


Shooting Off hand mine will break a 4"[?] clay at 50yds; then brake the two halves and dust off the four quarters 8 out of 10

I shoot CCI Standard Velocity all the time in my 15-22. Never had a cycling problem. Keep the receiver and bolt cleaned with a drop or two of good oil and you are good to go.

This is my Winchester 52D with a Lyman SuperTargetSpot 25X scope. I have probably tried 50 different kinds of .22 LR over the years. You just have to find what shoots best in your rifle. Mine will do this with iron sights at 50 yards, but now I need cataract surgery, which starts tomorrow.

What gun are you shooting? It makes a big difference in group size.

This is a British SMLE Trainer that I have with iron sights at 50 yards. Not a real pretty groups (all touching). But with right ammo it does pretty good. There are 10 shots in that target.

Was out on the range at Castle AFB, burning bricks for smallbore team practice. As I took a few minutes rest, my buddy swung his iron sighted rifle, to port, and popped a cottontail at about 135yds, that was moving slowly. He put down his rifle, jumped in the air and shouted, Dinner.

I don’t know offhand what the drop of a 22LR is from 100 to 135 yards. I’ll bet it’s a lot. Range estimation had to have been exact, as well as the wind call.

That rabbit had 4 lucky rabbits’ foots (feet?). Not a one of them did that rabbit a bit of good! lol

He and everyone used the Anschutz rifles, finest leather and not sure which sights.
I had a USAF Win 52D, great glove and canvas jacket with some leather. Four position smallbore.
The 52D gave me a 200-18x prone, and an Olympic Gold Medalist, gave me a beer. He shot 200-16x in a fun league opening prone, meet and greet.
My buddy, also part of the B52 Gunnery Sim shop, was often TDY with the all SAC team.
IIRC, at Perry, he was clean with two shots to go in 4 position.

Story was the his verbal words into the head of Remington's factory rep, blasted a hole from ear to ear.
One day a 12 year old Lad, took everyone, Masters thru Marksmen, at the Western Nations in El Monte, to school in the two man team, 50&100 yards, after the 4 position outdoors.
He got me by three points, on windy mirage afternoon.
Glad he was my team mate and we each won a pewter mug,
My beer and his root beer was yummy.

I first tried to get an age appropriate young Lady to team up with, girls and boys were not allowed to shoot together, but they invited this just 21 year old NCO to the square dance that night.
The young Ladies, all in tight brown leather and an Anschutz in their arms, love in bloom.
Moral of that story, should have driven down from Castle in my own car.

I think my buddy was surprised by that shot.
Some kids grew up with ranch chores.
Up before sunrise, to get ready and drop critters that dig holes and cripple the cattle and horses. 22-250 was the caliber.
The 12 year old kid's Dad said, that was his daily chore since age nine, and he rarely missed out to 400yds.
The kid used an Anschutz for smallbore.

With any gun chambered for .22 LR, try as many ammos as possible, standard and high velocity, and not just the cheapest bulk ammo. CCI SV is not the best for every gun, but will shoot quite accurately in more guns than anything else I've found. If you have a variety of .22s it's well worth trying. It does cost more than the cheap stuff, but it's far from the cost of expensive target ammo. Always shoot groups using a good quality bench rest setup at 50 yards on a very calm day. Maybe try the same at 100 yards.

My wife and I both have our own 15-22 PC. We both are equipped the same. Monstrum Guardian 3-9X32 Scope with MagPul Bipod. We both get less than 1/2in groupings at 25yds. (Max of our indoor range) She is a better shot and has put two bullets thru one hole many times. RO's have mentioned to me several times "Dude don't piss her off".
