Default Can M&P autos be shot "dry"?

Fellas,

I am considering a M&P9. I have heard so many good things about them and how they rival a Glock. I was wondering if the M&P's require a lot of lube or if they are built to basically fire "dry" like a Glock can.

I did a forum search and didn't see this topic come up.

Thanks for any replies.

Just about all combat handguns can run "dry". It's usually the tighter fitted match guns that need a good lube to run, especially when they are using lighter loads. I do use a needle oiler with a drop on the 4 rail pads, sear and barrel block/lockup area, may not need it but sure won't hurt.

There is still metal-to-metal contact with the polymer semi-autos, so to me there are two questions - will it work dry (probably) and should you keep it appropriately lubed to minimize wear (yes).

Actually you can change that "probably" to an unqualified "yes". When I got my M&P 9, I cleaned it and took it to the range and intentionally put 300 rounds through the weapon without lube. Firing was done fairly rapidly with little down time between mags (had a buddy loading for me). Not a single hiccup first shot to last. No signs of any excessive wear. However, I have followed the manufacturer's lube suggestions from then on out. Still not a single issue.

For those interested, we did the same 300 round dry test with my buddy's Glock 23 the same day with the same results. No issues whatsoever. His ammo just cost more.

There is absolutely no benefit to putting more lube into combat tupperware than the manufacturer recommends, based on millions of rounds fired by thousands of competitors. Putting too much lube, or into the wrong places, can cause problems.

if you read the M&P owners manual, it recommends 5 specific lubrication points only and advises against over-lubricating the gun.
