I want to add a .22 LR pistol to my collection. I've pretty much narrowed it down to either the M&P 22 or Sig Mosquito.

Internet review research shows the Sig to be a favorable performer, but I'm not too wild about the double action / single action trigger. The double action pull is extremely heavy.

I guess I'd be considered an M&P fan as I currently have a 9C, 40C, 45C and 15-22. I just can't seem to find a whole lot of reviews regarding the quality and reliability of the M&P 22.

Any experience you can share regarding either pistol would be greatly appreciated.

get the m&p

I have experience with both and currently own the m&p 22. The reason you can't find much online is because they are still very new. My experience with the Sig was it was very finicky about ammo (like many 22 autoloaders). On the contrary my m&p had some issues cycling bulk pack 22 ammo for the first 100 rounds or so. But after those initial break in rounds it cycles EVERYTHING I throw at it. Beside ammo related problems it has cycled federal, CCI, Remington, Federal, Winchester, and Aguila ammo perfectly. I have even run Aguila sub-sonics and they usually cycle fine. Some complain the trigger feels too different due to the internal hammer vs striker fired action, but I think the trigger on mine is quite good and I'm sure somebody (apex?) Will be coming out with mods. Anyway, overall I am very happy with the purchase of this 22 as it is the most reliably cycling and least ammo finicky 22 autoloader I have experienced. I think you will like it too since like me you already have the centerfire version and the 22 will make a good (and cheap) training aid.

I recently picked up the M&P .22 for a plinker.
I've been extremely happy with mine.
It's been reliable even with some older Rem bulk I have laying around.
I haven't hear any bad reviews on it .
I have no experience with the Sig

Can't share any experience with the MP22 yet, even though they are made 10 minutes from my house.... they are not legal in Mass yet. But I can tell you what a junk the Mosquito is, first hand. My wife purchased one after being advised by a LGD that I won't deal with anymore because of this gun. WE purchased the Mosquito on her recommendation, was told her husband would tweek it if needed. Long story short, it was nothing but trouble out of the box and my wife has zero patience for trouble... :) The gunsmith tweeked it said it would be fine, I went to the range immediately after picking it up, it cycled through the 1st magazine fine, after that it was a quick decline, I had all I could do from not throwing it out into S&W shooting range and breaking out my MP40 and finishing it off!! I took it back to the shop with me pissed to the max, I played with it trying to figure out what was causing it to not go into full battery and discovered if I oiled on top of the hammer and the bottom of the slide where it contacted the hammer it worked much better. By this time I was done, cleaned it up, put it back in the box and stuck it in the back of my vault....... went out and bought 2 Ruger Mark III's!! Now I'm just waiting for the MP22 to be available in Mass.. :) Oh ya, when I stopped into that gun store after buying that Mosquito, which they apparently sold a bunch of.... I noticed 2 or 3 used, like new, Mosquitos for sale..

Happy Holidays,

Coming from a SIG guy, don't buy the Mosquito. Had one and traded it. The M&P22 is much better in every way. Bill

Another vote for "not the Mosquito." The lower half of the Sig is plastic, even the trigger. Had one for 2 weeks, sold it for what I paid for it. It's a SIG in name only. Joe

My experience with the Sig Misquito matches the other replies, had one, very finicy about ammo, could not get it zeroed, even with 3 front sights. Got rid of it. I then got a 22LR P226 , does everything I wanted in a training gun. I just got a M&P 22 last month, shoots everything except cheap standard velocity. Again, it's a fine training gun for a centerfire M&P. BTW, they are built in Germany by Walther, not in Massachusetts. Go for the M&P. Bob!

S & W M & P model 15 22 cal pistol

I got one for Christmas last week. My wife was working midnight both Christmas eve and Christmas day. I went to the range and fired 100 rounds of CCI std velocity ammo. Gun shot fine after I adjusted the sights to shoot POA POI at 25 yards. Gun is a nice shooter. I don't know how the finish will hold up, time will tell. Right now magazines are scarce. I need a couple but S & W will be reopening on Tuesday and I will order a couple.
That being said If you want the Cadillac of 22 pistols spend a couple bucks more and get a model 41. I have one and they put the bullets in the same hole. Its such a pleasure to shoot.

m&p22......or maybe the walther p22?

A few years back, I was in the same situation. I wanted to pick up a 22 "plinker". I rented both the mosquito, and the walther p-22. Given the feel in hand, the mosquito felt the most like a "plastic" gun that I have ever tried on. What pushed me over the edge was the mosquito jammed even with cci (mini-mags) ammo at the rental range. I subsequently went with the p22. After seeing the inital lukewarm reviews that the early p22's have been given, I consider myself lucky, in that after a 3000-3500 rounds (nearly all CCI), I have had a total of 5 misfires. Quite the excellent plinker!

Wondering what this has to do with the M&P-22? Well, the M&P-22 is manufactured by walther (umarex). As such, I consider it to be a "p22-v3" with the majority of the early teething problems with some p22's cleared up in the new m&p22.

Most assuredly, go with the m&p22.

Alternatively, you might like to check out the walther's current p22 (polymer frame now modeled after the new 9/40 walther ppq).

I was thinking that when I was typing... :) but then I figured, WTH.. I still live 10 minutes from S&W... :) I'm still putting a Govenor on layaway the next batch that hits the retail store... gotta buy something while I'm waiting for the MP 22 to get legalized.. :D

I bought a M&P 22 to replace my GSG 1911-22. The M&P has a better trigger and is more accurate the the GSG- so much so that I have just put another 2nd M&P on layaway - once my wife shoots the 1st one , I'll lose it anyway.
