EPA to phase out stop/start systems on cars

EV - NO!!!
Hybrid - No!!!

GAS POWER BABY!!!!!!!!!!!

I drive two older vehicles, old enough such that they do not have GPS/navigation screens, no backup cameras, etc. I dread the day when I have to obtain a vehicle with all of those assorted gizmos on the dashboard.

Vehicle number one is a 1998 Nissan Frontier with 200,000 miles and almost every major part has been replaced. An exceedingly useful vehicle. Vehicle number two is a 2010 Cadillac CTS and it is my fifth used Cadillac; it has 47,000 miles, nearly a third of which I have put on since March of 2024. It drives like a dream just as all of the previous Caddies did and I didn't have to shell out $40K and I have no car payments. THAT is what I consider to be a wise investment in gas-powered motor vehicles.

And, not to be critical of colleagues here, but you stay healthy and alive by paying attention to the world around you. Depending on your car to stop automatically when it senses danger is nice but being alert is just as nice.

And worrying about the earth warming is too silly to discuss on a gun forum.

When driving, always remember AAA. No, not the idiots with tow trucks, it's an acronym. Safety behind the wheel is due to Alertness, Attention, and Ability. Some of these driver's aids take away from that. As far as auto braking in particular, I've always thought to myself, "What if I want to drive through a wooden fence to escape a parking lot of ninja zombies?" 😁

I've had my Lexus RX 450h for 15 years. It has the auto start/stop system. I've never had a problem with it. It is so smooth and seamless I don't even notice it, so it doesn't bother me. But then, it is a Lexus. ;)

Step daughter had a 1992 Sentra bought new for $9999. Backing out of a parking space with a pickup with a cap blocking her view, she was hit by a car driven by a woman who was running an illegal day care, with 5 kids in her car, had no insurance and was going so fast she totalled my step daughters car. Had an imprint of her face makeup in the drivers window glass and it was bent outwards by the impact.
I cut the rear end off and welded on another in 4 days at my shop. Her insurance covered the damage and she won a wet t shirt contest at the hooters where she worked. Cleared $9200 tax free and drove that same car another 100k miles then sold it for $1200.

Wouldn't have happened in my new Prius.

The woman who hit her was driving on the wrong side of a parking lot that had 50 feet of clearance behind my step daughters car. No ticket issued since it was a parking lot. No way my stepdaughter could have avoided that stupidity by the other driver.

No big deal in a hybrid set up like the Toyotas. My wife's RAV4 stops the engine (runs the accessories off the big battery) at stop signs or stop lights. As someone stated earlier, no starter and when the gas engine starts you won't notice it most of the time. Sort of feels like an automatic transmission changing gears at some times and not noticeable at other times.

I keep it turned off on the BMW. Hate that hesitation/vibration when it starts up at a stop light/stop sign (makes me think something bad just happened to the engine). On one of the forums I belong to some people were suggesting some BMW models were experiencing engine failure issues due to the constant starting/stopping of the engine so often when it's at operating temps. Doesn't make it true but one engine size seemed to have a lot of failures vs. the others.

My F250 doesn't have it. I wonder if it's just not "required" on the bigger trucks?

Having a starter or battery fail in your driveway or parking lot is a pain, it's happened to me several times over the years. Having it fail in the middle of the street at a busy stoplight, big pain.

Stupid idea that was!! Somebody had to have a reason for being to keep their job. Did some cars have a button to shut off that feature?

I bought a 2017 Escape at the auction. On the way home I had to stop for gas. I opened the gas door and cursed the "auction thief" who stole the gas cap. Nope...capless system. Then at the next red light..I said to myself....this is the smoothest 4 cylinder engine Ford has ever built! Then I noticed the tach was on zero. Welcome to start/stop. Never really bothered me..but I don't drive much, and none of my car have it anyways.

The price of a replacement battery for a stop/start car is quite a bit more than a conventional setup and some battery companies won't warranty a battery placed in a stop/start car.

I always thought it was irritating and useless. The minute amount of fuel saved is offset by the wear and tear on the starter and other parts. I can bypass it on my truck, just have to remember to do it every time I start.
My wife bought a 2025 Outback and she does the same thing. She gets irritated easily. This is on her long list.

4.4 cents a mile is $4400 per 100k miles.
At 15 MPG you are spending 65/15 times the money on fuel. That's $19000 versus my $4400.
$14600 in my pocket every 100k and this car can go 341,000 miles on the original brake pads.
Your V8 engine burns .5 gal per hour idling. My car can go at least 32.5 miles on that same fuel while yours sits there and goes nowhere. If I drove slowly I can average over 90 miles per gallon.
But you drive a Prius...I drove big rigs, going through So. Cal on the freeway Many times a Prius would exit the carpool lane at the last instant to join a backed up exit lane stopping in front of my truck trying to commit suicide...and to your point. I haven't driven 100,000 in the last 8 years. Far less . I can live with the cost of driving my diesel 4x4.

There is a plug in bypass, i have one in my 20 f 150. Have not had a problem since I plugged it in 2 yrs or more

Better write this one down-Uncle Sugar doing sensible things is like seeing a unicorn at Walmart. I can't wait.

I would never have bought a car with auto-stop, let's start with that. And it occurs to me this particular "feature" only works with automatic transmissions. See where I'm heading? Nope, not really, I do own a 7-spd CVT Honda now, and love it. It's smooth, efficient and has paddles for easy downshifts (saving brake pads), and also gets better gas mileage than the 6-spd manual (never thought I'd read that!)
