I just bought a M&P 40 VTAC (love the sights, BTW!) in DE. I ordered some spare mags for it, which have the black butt plates. It got me to thinking (dangerous and seldom undertaken) that I'd like to have a little bit of a two-tone look. So, I am going to put on a black grip insert and a black frame tool to match the black magazine butt plates, which S&W generously said they would send to me for free. (Love their CS!)

So, what to do about the DE magazine butt plates on the two magazines I have? I asked the rep, and he said he didn't have any black butt plates with the hole in the middle, which mine have, and in fact so did all the other M&P magazines I have ever had. He said he was going to send me a couple of plates with the end catch and tab. Has anyone ever heard of this?

I also wonder if the magazine butt plate from a 10 round magazine might work? Does anyone know?

I sure didn't want to quibble, since the rep was being so generous!

You can put the new plate on the older mags. Just be sure to use both parts they send you. They went to a new style.

I am a little confused by your comment. The magazines that came with my pistol (which was made in 2012) have the center hole. There is no "catch" as the rep described to me. Is the "catch" the older style?

I've never seen any M&P magazines with anything but a center hole, and no other part or catch...so I'm having a hard time visualizing and describing this.

When the parts that S&W is sending me get here, I can post pictures, or have a better understanding, I suppose. It's not like the ones I have won't work...I was just wanting to change the color scheme! :p

You know, I just had a thought (this may be a record...two in one day!) but why couldn't I paint the DE floor plates? Clean then with denatured alcohol, and then spray paint them black with some kind of polymer-friendly spray paint?

Would that work?

Post a ad to trade with someone for black ones, there is a Cabellas only special edition in FDE. being sold that looks a lot like the VTAC but comes with black floor plates - I'll bet one of those guys would be willing to trade.

That's a good idea, thanks!

I had already sent Krylon an e-mail, asking them what process and product they would recommend to spray paint handgun polymer. They answered back, saying they didn't have anything that they could recommend specifically, as tested on polymer. They suggested I try one of the Fusion line on a small section (which a base plate is small) and let it dry completely for a week. If by then I couldn't remove the paint easily with a finger nail, then it should adhere.

I may give it a shot (pun intended) or if I don't get any takers on my trade offer, I did find some extended base plates on Midway, and I may buy them and put these DE base plates in the box for safe keeping, along with the other DE parts I am changing to black. In the event I ever do sell or trade the pistol, the buyer may want to go back to all DE.

I got the base plates that S&W sent in the mail today (very fast, S&W! Thanks!) and they actually match the style of base plates on the magazines I ordered from Greg Cote...which also came in the mail today.

So, I switched them out, and now all my mags match...and my OCD is satisfied for the moment. :p
