ok guys and gals!

we got to take the shield 40 out to the range today... and it was a great day!!!

first off we had NO mag drops, that being said i'll post what i did to fix the mags.

we just went thru a box of 20 FMJ Ball 180gr. American Eagle's...

at first she was having trouble saying it was 8" low vs POA but it was also FTF. so i had her breathe, re-grip, concentrate, and explain the trigger. then she was about Dead on with POA and no FTF.

so after a full mag of both 6 and 7 i had her chamber one, then install a full mag. again no issues to FTF or FTE.

so back to just installing a new clip and dropping the slide. it would FTF only on the 7 rounder and only the first two shots.

i had a go with it and it would lock the slide on those first two shots like it was empty, but by dropping the slide it would chamber and go into full battery.

NEVER an issue with the last shots in either mag...so my question is this. i cut 1/2 of the 7 and 1 coil off the 6 rounder as she couldn't even load it. is it possible the spring is so strong its keeping those first rounds from feeding? when they come into shock i was going to buy two more mag springs and keep cutting them till it had FTF on the last shot.

pics and targets included.

What do you think??

P.S. She gave the gun a 10.5 and loves it! My report to you guys is it acts alot like a Series 80 1911. very comfortable to shoot (but not a range gun), kick is little less than an Officers sized 1911 (3.5" barrel), but half the weight... A++ in my book...

COPIED FROM ANOTHER THREAD

hey guys and gals! new guy on the forum but long time shooting/collector!

i have been following the site/thread for awhile before picking up my shield 40! i was lucky and got on the Sept 5th...

Anyways i got it for the girl for SD and conceal Carry and she loves it! but we havn't shot it yet. so after reading this entire thread i figured i would throw in my two cents.

my shield 40 is a DXY4*** model, i bought it damn near right off the truck, and it did not come with the "factory Modified" mags as you guys are getting when you send them in.

So in normal fashion i broke down the entire gun for a clean and look over, as well as the mags to do the bump out... now i went to where it just made a groove in the mag well and then barely backed it off, but as stated it still wiggles.

so then i put two strips of everyday electrical tape on both backs of the mags. it was to tight and would not install, removed one piece of tape and went in tight, and pop's out about 1" but will not fall out.

the other complaint i had was how freaking tight the mag spring was to fight while installing rounds! HOLY ****! so i took one half coil off the 7 rounder and one off the 6. this seemed to make it a little better but dont want to take anymore off till i see how it feeds on the last one (though i think i will be able to take another 1 coil off each.

As stated this needs to be at least noted to all shops that are selling it, mine had no idea to the issues, and all in all its an easy fix, BUT S&W needs to do the right thing...

going to shoot a box of 180 grain Ball FMJ American Eagle tomorrow so i'll get back to you.

Thanks for all the info and hope mine helps!

P.S. with these mods their is NO Rattles or clinks on the shake test with slide open of not...

bump...

as soon as they are available im gonna order a couple of the mag springs and keep cutting them down... i think the FTF is due to the mag spring tension...

The mag springs on my Shield 40 are both the same length. Probably a way to save money. The 7 rounder should be longer than the 6 rounder.

The following link is a five minute video showing flip and recoil differences in my Shield 40. I am using Federal target ammo and high power CorBon SD ammo for the comparison. The slow motion takes up nearly half of the time.

Looks like she is shooting very well. Good groups for the shield from what I have seen....

when i cut them i did a 1/2 coil off the 7 and 1 coil off the 6. but yes i agree the they did it for ease of manuf. and cost...

i have to ask im not sure what you were trying to show ME with this vid? i understand the cor-bon was hotter...

I have seen many posts about the recoil on the 40. Many people fearing the 40 would have too much recoil and flip for them to handle. The video shows the recoil between target and high power ammo and allows a way to measure it.

I am not into posting shooting videos. We all should know how to shoot and accuracy varies between technique and practice. I love those people that find fault with their shooting accuracy and question the accuracy of the gun.

I use an UpLula speed loader. It works great and not only speeds loading but makes it much easier getting the last few cartridges loaded, as it allows for more downward pushing pressure. I use it on my 9mm, 40 S&W, and 45acp mags. It works especially well on high capacity mags.

i agree... the gun 99% of the time can out shoot the shooter so to speak... and as i said its like my 45 1911 officers, little less kick, way smaller package...

yea we were both on! i only got a clip but it was still fun! well get it broke in and the bugs worked and then will get her some distance practice and hip shooting...

another range day!

so far no mag drops and this is 100 rounds...

so here is what we had... #,#,# means out of each mag

Both 180grain ball

on the 7 round Mag FTF FTE
Magtech Ammo 0 0
Winchester Ammo 1,0 0

on the 6 round Mag FTF FTE
MagTech 1,0,0,0 0
Winchester 0

so notes...

the slide release is really loosening up, FTF went from 1 or 2 on every mag to 2 for 50 rounds, which is a Very big improvement... i think before i mess with the mags more i will just have to throw more rounds down range, just needs to be broke in... Also i thought the Magtech ammo was more accurate, but the Winchester had more kick so it might have more punch behind it...
