That is the question. I have a M&P 9c for CCW and want to change the stock sights. I am impressed with TFOs but also like the HDs. What say y'all on this CCW sight choice? Also- which ones for my duty weapon (M&P40 fs)? Lay your collective knowledge on me.....
I have TFO's on one of my "house guns" a XDm .45. They are very nice and do what they are supposed to day or night. I have been in a quandary over what to put on my Shield. I am leaning toward the HD's. I think they probably offer the best of both worlds. Quick pickup of the front sight, and precision if needed. I am older and wear glasses. It would be nice to have a larger, more visible front sight to help cheat the system and Trijicon HD's and Ameriglo both offer that option. I am aware that Big Dots are in the mix, but everyone that owns them always reminds me that are not for precision shooting. That turns me off even though, if the SHTF, most of us will be point shooting anyway.
After using a variety of tritium sights over the years, I could never tell much difference in them. The TFOs are a breed apart though. They are, by far, the best sights I have ever used under a variety of lighting conditions. The dual fiber optic/tritium illumination is very good. Tru-glo has an awesome product in the TFO sight.
I have TFO's on multiple guns, they are far superior, in my opinion, to Trijicons for several reasons:
1. TFO's are easier to pick up in low light, dim, but not dim enough to glow.
2. I can almost buy 2 sets of TFO's if I shop hard for what one set of TJ's cost.
3. In the daylight, there is absolutely no comparison in the 2. TFO's glow, in direct sun/glare, TJ's can be hard to see in the same situation.
All my M&P's have Tru Glo sights, but they are not all TFO and the TFO sights are definitely the best, I took Trijigon sites off two pistol and replaced them with Tru Glo sites. You can see the TFO sites under any lighting conditions not with Trijigon sites which are only good at night.
Fortunately I have the MGW M&P sight tool as well as the Talon M&P rear sight tool that makes changing my sights a simple 15 minute job! Since I have 6 M&P pistols and my M&P15 Sport rifle it can be expensive to change sight if a gunsmith charges you 45-65 each to change sites so for me having my own tools seemed like a best investment!
I have the Trijicon HDs in orange on both my 9c and 40c. Took forever for me to decide on what sights to get and once i learned about the HDs and did my research, i knew that the HDs is the sights i wanted to get. Fronts sight pops, rear sight is dark and it has night sights. Everything i was looking for.
Only down side is that for some reason, the HDs for the M&Ps are the most expensive. To me it is an investment so it was worth it, especially since it is our CCW firearms.
I heard too many story about the front sight of the TFOs falling out. It looks good during the night and day but I didnt want to take the risk. I will say that the night sights on the HDs are very visible but the night dots are small compared to the TFOs.
I have TFO's and I have to agree, in lit or bright conditions or in the dark they work extremely well. Not so much for just Dim lighting, plus I don't know what they use to finish their sights but whatever it is it wears off quick. Mine already have silver edges after only about 8-9 months of holster wear. I do like them a lot however and it is very comforting to look over on the nightstand and see those three little glowing lights.
For just a night sights Trijicon are better but for all day carry Truglo TFOs are the best. TFOs have the best of both worlds, you can use them at night, day, range, indoors and outdoors. I have TFOs installed in almost all my guns. The ones that don’t have them are because Truglo still does not manufacture them.
I will add my vote for the TFO as well, it seems to be the right fit for every kind of light condition, I have yet found a scenario that I didnt look at the sights and think that I may have made a bad choice in that model, I have them on my daily carry 9mm and ordering them for my 40 cal too. My only downside is when I get my vtac I may end up wanting to swap the vtac sites for the tfo as well
All my M&P's have Tru Glo sights, but they are not all TFO and the TFO sights are definitely the best, I took Trijigon sites off two pistol and replaced them with Tru Glo sites. You can see the TFO sites under any lighting conditions not with Trijigon sites which are only good at night.
What Trijicon sights did you remove? Was it the regular Trijicons or the Trijicon HDs? Both of them should not be confused.
Also for those of you that have the TFO's, have you tried the HD's? I keep hearing that the "Trijicons" are not good during the day and only at night. I can tell you first hand, that the Trijicons HDs are great during the day. But then again i dont know if you guys are confusing the regular Trijicons with the Trijicon HDs.
I am not knocking the TFOs in anyway. I have them on my sig which is my night stand gun. I just wouldnt use it for my CCW gun.
Here is a video (not my video) of a guy doing POV shooting during the day.
I am currently running this test myself....
Trijicon HD w/ Orange circle front...on 357sig S&W M&P
TFO on Glock29 shooting hot loads...no loose fiber optics yet.
TFO's are awesome, no doubt about it. I have some on a G26 and I like them alot.
But... IIRC, the warranty on them is nothing compared to the Trijicons. So, if you don't mind the possibility of picking up the cost on repairs for the TFO's go for it. I had to silicone one of the rear sight tubes back in on mine, I'm glad I caught it before I lost it.
