Just got my (Shield) two days ago...after firing the first magazine the 'white' dot on the front sight was missing. Fired 100 rds of cheap steel case Monarch and 25 rds of brass ammo with only (1) FTE due my daughter limp wristing it I think. Otherwise, I am 100 percent satisfied with the pistol. I still think the sights are off a little bit but they are not 'easily' adjustable (shooting at 7 yards). Should I send it back to S&W or is their an easier fix...like using fingernail polish/paint and make it work. Thanks!

Yep, finger-nail polish works great! I've got a can of white "sign paint" that I bought at an art store that's particularly bright. I've owned 3 M&P's, and the white dot disappeared before break-in on all three. So I say just fix it, as you said.

Call Smith and Wesson and ask them what they recommend. I hear they are very helpful.

After doing some research (which I should have done before posting) I found out this is not uncommon. Got some good ideas/info on how to 'fix' my problem. Thanks for all the responses.

I had that happen to my 9mm Shield. I just borrowed some of my daughters neon orange finger nail polish and painted the front sight. I like it this way cause at the range, the sunlight washes the normal 3 white dot sights out. I'll use the orange until my Ameriglo night sights come in.

Same thing happened on my FS M&P. Called S&W and a new front sight appeared in the mail a few days later.

I have a "chunk" missing out of my fs dot.... I have a set of XS Big Dots on the way so I'm not overly concerned about fixing it but I will patch it with white nail polish in case I ever go back to them.

My S&W Shield lost a dot after a couple of range trips also. It makes me wonder why the boys at S&W even bother to put the paint in the dots to begin with...

S&W will fix it, but you will be without the gun for a few weeks. Another option is for you to do the job yourself and keep the gun home. The bonus is your dot application will likely stay there!

I would think the 2-way FedEx shipping and time to fix a ****** dot job costs S&W much more $$$ than applying the white dots correctly in the first place. Call me crazy.

They told me to send it in or use finger nail polish or model paint. I used white finger nail polish. The orange was harder to see or some reason.

Been there done that. It pissed me off that S&W would produce it like that. Get yourself some white paint, worked great for me.

s&w sent me a brand spanking new front sight for free with no questions asked. Customer service to the max.

Use white out...cheaper VERY easy to use. Not the water based stuff. And yea I keep the bottle in my range bag....Why get a new frontsight when you can just fix..better.

Although it is regrettable that this is a recurrent problem with S&W, it gives us an excuse to try different colors. I've settled on fluorescent green.

I found some glow-in-the-dark paint in the craft section at Walmart. They had neon yellow, green, and orange & it was just a couple of bucks. I do recommend with a base layer of white, then add whatever color you want on top of it. Doing it this way seems to make the color a lot brighter.

Just another reason to get Tru Glo TFO sights they work well under any light condition including total darkness as well as noon sunlight and do not need batteries they are pricey but try Amazon or Ebay, I am waiting for mine to replace some night sights that are hard to see on my S&W M&P 40 Compact all the rest of my M&P's have them already, what great sights for old eyes, and even better for those younger than myself!

Thanks for starting this post and the answers! My Shield lost its front sight some time during my 2nd trip to the range. Sounds like I have a lot of really cheap options; or the $60 to $80 Truglo.
