Hi,

New to the forum, Hello from CA!

Just picked up my S&W M&P 9mm Compact about 2 months ago.
Cleaned it right away. Put about 400 rounds through it & cleaned it again today (rainy day activity).

Here's my issue. I know there will be paint lose on the rails & most any moving part internally.
Though after cleaning the whole gun (hoppe's 9 bore solvent) & oiling (again hoppe's) then assembling back together. I noticed at top where the slide is & the ammo ejects that the paint on the plating after its recoils back is wearing off. I included a photo, you can see right where it starts to slant down into the frame (it's worse then the photo leads on).

my main concern it's going to get worse since I ONLY PUT LESS THEN 400 ROUNDS through it & it's only 2 months old.

Guns always lubed (not to lubed) & I keep it pretty clean.

THIS IS MY 1ST GUN, Be kind to my lack of knowledge.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or knowledge.

You are right that the photo doesn't really show the severity of the problem. If you are unhappy, I'd take good pics from all angles and send them to S&W and see what they say.

Yeah, The photo really doesn't get the point across hah.
I figured I would give S&W a call tomorrow.
Thanks for the reply!

Unless they have change something, there is no paint from S&W on my barrels marking the caliber. Lots of folks would add paint to mark them.

If you like it, you can easily redo it with fingernail polish. I believe there are several threads about how to do it. Some have used crayon also.

The area you have shown will be slightly scrached as the weapon cycles. Really no harm to the weapon.IMHO

What you are seeing is normal. If, we are talking about the slope area just forward of the 9mm lettering.

I have a M&P40 with a little over 10,000 rounds thru it, and the wear on the paint/coating is much more obvious than what is shown in your picture. On my 9mm M&P with a lot less rounds, the pain/coating looks a lot like yours.

You have a super pistol, enjoy it.

I have included a picture of my Shield after 800 rounds and pocket carry for 9 months in my Desantis pocket holster.

I owned a Beretta Nano prior to my Shield that had much more wear after 200 rounds.

I have a wear line right after the "m" on the hood where two different angles intersect.

Same issues with a $1000 Sig. This a spot where they wear off the finish.

Thanks for the heads up!

I'm new to guns so I was not sure if it was called paint, coat, or another method of coloring to the gun.

I have come to terms with the gun fading with time & rounds put through it.
Though I would be surprised if after less then 400 rounds that it would fade already.

Could the Hoppe's barrel solvent fade it?

Don't have a M&P but the barrels are blued aren't they ?

Whenever you have 2 pieces rubbing together you're going to have wear.

It's common sense.

Take a look at my Springfield Armory xDS after only 200 rounds

It's gonna wear no matter what

I have no idea if Hoppe's is the cause. Recently I attended a concealed class and the police officer presenting was down on Hoppe's. He recommended slip2000 Add the .com and you will locate the product.

The police officer told us metal is porous and solvent will be absorbed into the metal which he told us was not good.

All of you guys have been AWESOME!

Thanks for all the info & tips!

Also, I miss spoke. I have only put about 200 rounds through it.
Guess I was only daydreaming about be able to shoot more. hah

Living in CA, It cost easily $40+ to shoot 50+ rounds.
Dang range fees.

The wear is completely normal. It starts showing up even after the first magazine. You can remove the bluing and go with a polished look. The wear is not as bad that way, but it's still there.

I have a full size m&p 9 and shows the same wear as yours. No worries. Enjoy!

Avoid products that contain ammonia says S&w. some legacy products contain it. S&W has their own line of cleaning and lube products.
No doubt a private label product.

I think the barrels have a Melonite finish, but don't quote me. Hoppe's is not going to hurt your barrel, but I wouldn't get a lot of it on the frame of the gun. It probably wouldn't hurt it, but I wouldn't do it anyway. When you are done cleaning your barrel just wipe off the Hoppe's and it should be fine.

The wear on the "hood" area of your barrel is completely normal. The front locking surface of the barrel is going to get "bright" as the gun is fired. You can't stop it and it is nothing to be concerned about as long as the wear is smooth and even. If the wear starts to look like gouges or deep scratches, that is not good (usually referred to as "galling") but its not likely your gun would develop anything like that. Just put a drop of oil on that locking surface when you go to the range for target shooting. A high-pressure grease is better, but oil is a lot handier to apply.
