Default Magazine Carry

When you carry your Shield, do you find yourself carrying spare magazines?

Debating on if it's worth it to buy another spare magazine, double magazine holster for twice the price of a single. Then I have to send another magazine in separate to be refinished. I think one spare is enough for a light carry. That's just me. Just looking at other opinions and seeing what everyone else does.

Having the one spare, I just have to spend $28 + shipping on a magazine carrier.

To have 2, I have to purchase a magazine ($32) + $58 magazine carrier + $10 or so for refinishing and $10 for return shipping.

Basically it's a $75 difference. I am too OCD to let it sit.

I just ordered a shield and a spare 8-round magazine. That'll give me 2 8-round magazines and a 7-round magazine. I'll only plan on carrying it with 1 spare magazine, for now.

This will be my first carry weapon and I can't carry yet (application sent) so hopefully other's will chime in.

I have been carrying for 35 yrs, I carry 2 mags, or 2 speed loaders. Yes for the 38,357,41,44 have not found one for the 500, 2 15 rd mags 40 sw, occasionally 2- 13 rd 45 acp. Why ?? Mags/speedloaders break!! If I am hunting with 357/41/44/500 and I shoot it will take one shot to kill the animal. I will use the rest as a signal device when I fall and break my leg, protection from predators ( 4 and 2 legged ), use powder to clot bleeds when my Quick Clot runs out, fire - ( lost my flint in my pack remember), and on and on. I will not die cold, alone WISHING I HAD ONE MORE CARTRIDGE!!!!! Be Safe,

Thumbs up

chrischoi:

Generally, the most likely failure mode of a semi-auto is related to the magazine, not to mention actually having to empty it in use. Carrying at least one spare should be engraved in stone someplace.

I don't have a Shield, but my EDC rotation is a pair of single-stack 1911's "outdoors", and a 40C around the house. At least one spare mag, either way. I do cheat just a little - the spare for the 40C is from a 40FS. It's no harder to carry, and adds a little extra, just in case. I tried that with the 1911's, but it didn't work - the single stackers don't have a tapered feed area that stops the magazine before it protrudes out the top of the slide ....

For something like a Shield in 9mm, or even .40, a pair of spare magazines might be a very good idea, but having at least one is sort of a requirement.

Regards,

I currently do not (unless wearing jeans and can put one in my left pocket) , but not for lack of trying. Have a horizontal mag holder being made, so I can give it another try.

As a female, I am not straight up and down, and have been unable to conceal one comfortably. I think a horizontal holder will solve the problem.

I carry an extra magazine. Currently I use the DeSantis Pro Stealth, which has a mag sleeve on the front end of it. In reality, I would prefer have the spare on my left hand side.

DeSantis Pro Stealth N87 Ambidextrous Firearm Holster Black N87BJD6Z0 N87BJD6Z0. DeSantis Style N87 Holsters, DeSantis Style N87 Concealed Holsters, DeSantis Concealed Holsters.

My EDC is a Shield 9mm and I actually prefer the 7rd mag to the 8 rd. I have large hands but the small mag feels great with two and a half fingers. I plan to buy multiple 7rders asap.

All depends on the situation. I prefer to carry my Shield 9 with the 7 round mag in it, though I put the 8 round mag in it at night or when it's not on me and is at the house. Since I keep both mags loaded all the time, I'll usually grab the 8 rounder and throw it a jacket pocket or pants pocket, but I will carry just the Shield without a spare at times.

One should always carry a reload no matter the weapon. Dress around the weapon as well as the reloads.

I picked up 2 extra 8 rd mags. Why?

Well, I'd like to carry 2 extra, and they were cheap ($32).

In addition, I am limited to 1 hr at the range. It is a hassle and time consuming to keep loading.

To get my money's worth out of range time, I figure the extra loaded magazines will allow me to concentrate on my technique vs. fighting with loading the mag.

Also, as others have mentioned, mags break, and there is NO GUARANTEE that there will NOT be a magazine shortage in the future (of course, this always occurs when one desperately needs it). Be prepared. Worse off...you can sell it separately, or it adds value to sale of bundle - gun/mags/etc.

I don't carry a spare to have more rounds, I carry a spare in case of a malfunction. Most self-defense situations are over in a matter of seconds. The need to shoot ten rounds, reload and shoot ten more is very unlikely. However, a malfunction can happen any time without warning. I at least want the ability to fix it and still be able to shoot back.

I always have one spare magizine for each gun that I usually carry in my truck. If I feel the place I am going warrants it, I take spare with me. Short stop, getting gas, etc., I might not take one with me. Situation and surroundings I guess is what warrants rather I have extra or not.

i'd like to carry a spare, but i'm still waiting on my IWB mag holder from crossbreed. great reputation, but slow build times. the one time i carried an extra mag for my shield i used my leatherman pouch, but didn't like it sitting on the outside of my pants and (just my opinion) not easily accesible with the velcro flap instead of being in a form fitted kydex.

I have alot of extra mags for all my handguns, however I never carry a extra mag, and have plenty of holders to do so. I do carry everyday and see no need for the extra baggage....I'm 60 years old and never needed even my magful to save my life or others..so for me, I'll keep the backup ammo at home and at ready there. Young guns with extra mags aren't really what CC is all about....walk away is a real option too.

5-Star has speed loaders for the 500. I have two for my 460XVR. 5 Star Firearms | Speed Loaders | Range Blocks | Leather Pouches | 100% American Made

I carry a Sig P238 .380 AP in my right front pocket and a spare magazine in the small pocket above it. My routine urban carry is adding one of my 1911s and a spare magazine. For rural carry, I switch to a FNH FNX-45 or Glock G20 10mm and two spare magazines. For woods carry, I go with either an S&W 460 or .44 magnum with two speed loaders.

Ammunition fails, guns fail, and magazines fail. Your first shot could be a squib shot with a bullet stuck in the barrel. Your second shot may fail due to gun or magazine malfunction. God Bless the pessimist, for he brings extra guns and ammo.

None. It's completely pointless. Not only are you never statistically going to get into a civilian shooting BUT if you did, statistically you'll never reload. I've been involved in several police shootings and no one I know has ever reloaded. Simply one more thing to lose, forget, drop or.... IF you've missed with your first 4,5,...6 shots at pointblank range, you are already in huge trouble and don't need to reload.

Carry a reload and pistol for same reason. Rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Like I said previously, I carry an extra not for more rounds, but in case of a malfunction. Your statistics are correct and it is unlikely that any of us will ever get in a shooting, let alone a drawn out one. But that's not why we carry.

The extra mag is in case of a malfunction. I may not have time to clear the malfunction, but I'd rather have the opportunity to fix it than not.

If we follow your logic all the way through, no one should ever carry a gun because it's unlikely that they'll need it. We shouldn't pay for fire or flood insurance either. We should also get rid of the spare tire in the car. I could go on and on with it.

If you don't want to carry an extra mag that's your choice, but advising others not to carry one is not good advice.

Safariland makes a nifty horizontal magazine carrier. It is easy on and off and the case protects the magazine from little dings and so forth if you take it off and put it in your glove box or purse. It is very low profile.

The Shield if my usual off duty gun. I carry it appendix in a Raven Concealment holster and I carry two spare mags (short seven rounders) in a Raven mag pouch.

Two mags (or one) in a well built carrier is light weight and easy to conceal. There is really no reason not to carry at least one spare mag.

The idea isn't that you will expend all of your ammo in the pistol (though it is possible, especially with a single stack gun) but that it may be needed due to malfunction or the magazine in the gun may have been dislodged during a struggle.

Statistically most LEO's will never find themselves in an officer involved shooting. Does that mean you won't carry a spare mag on your duty belt?

Lets keep in mind that departments with above average training are still looking around a 20% shot to hit ratio. I would be willing to bet that in the multiple shootings you were involved in, there were more rounds finding air and the ground than meat.

Also, just because you "hit someone at pointblank range" doesn't mean the fight is over. Just because you fired doesn't mean you hit them. Just because you hit them doesn't mean you hurt them.Just because they are hurt, that doesn't mean they are stopping their actions right now.

It may take 3,4,5 or more shots to stop someone. Add in the factor of another bad guy or two and that single stack magazine quickly runs out of BB's.

Carry a extra loaded mag for the Shield in my back left back pocket. I use either a Remara mag carrier or Blackhawk #3 holster.

No matter what gun I am carrying I carry two spare reloads; either mags or speed loaders. With a good pouch they are invisible.

I carry one spare with my 14+1 round pistol. When my M&P40C ever gets delivered that gives me only 10+1 rounds in the gun. I plan on carrying two spare mags then. Not so much that I think I'll need the firepower but now I'll have two mags to malfunction & will still be able to reload.
