Default M&P 40C trigger issue

I have a new M&P 40 C and after 100 rounds I had an issue where I pulled the trigger and nothing happened. Seeing no apparent issues, I kept the gun down range and pulled the trigger some more times. After 4 pulls with no firing, the 5th pull resulted in a firing. This happened once more so I put the gun away. I cleaned it that night and saw nothing apparent. Dry fire after cleaning resulted in no obvious issues. Has anyone had similar issues with the 40C?

Perhaps the ammo you were using? Did you look at the spent brass to inspect how the primer strike looked?

It's not the ammo. If it were the ammo it wouldn't matter how many times the trigger was pulled. Once the trigger on an M&P has been pulled, assuming the sear is released, the slide must be articulated to set the sear again. So, you can pull the trigger as many times as you like and it won't do anything.

That's not what happened here.

It sounds like something was interfering with the trigger bar. Let me explain how it works...
The trigger bar moves under the sear. As the trigger is pressed, the trigger bar presses the sear to release the striker. As the slide moves to the rear it moves the trigger bar to the right and out from under the sear. When the trigger is released the trigger bar moves forward, in front of the sear, and then back to the left. This is the point where it is reset.

It sounds like something prevented the trigger bar from moving back to the left. By pulling the trigger multiple times it may have worked back into place. Since it happened twice, it needs to be checked.

Pull the slide off and inspect the trigger bar. Look closely at the area around the trigger bar and sear.

You handled this safely and did the right thing by quitting when it happened again.

I suggest contacting S&W right away and not using the the firearm until they get it in their hands and declare it good to go. Their customer service is great and you won't regret having the assurance from them.

+1 nice job being safe.

As explained by Rastoff, each pull should release the striker. The only way this would not happen is something interfering with the trigger bar travel, either forward movement (trigger not resetting) or rearward travel (sear not releasing the striker). You can easily see if the sear loop is resetting under the sear, with the slide off. Check the sear movement with the slide off. With the trigger fully pulled back the sear should move back to level or just slightly past level. If so it is working correctly. Check that nothing is interfering with the trigger movement, either forward or rearward. With the slide on, if dry firing, you should hear the striker being released every time the trigger is pulled, after racking the slide. Check the reset with the slide on. Pull the trigger fully back and hold it there. Rack the slide and then slowly release the trigger. You should hear a click (sear loop resetting under the sear) and by pulling the trigger, the sear should release the striker. After the sear releases the striker, there should be about 1/16 inch or more of further trigger movement to the rear (over travel), after the striker is released.

If all checks out OK, then take it out to the range again and test. It should be fine, as you made all the checks. If you have any more issues, call S&W and send it back for warranty repair.

Bob

Thanks for the inputs. I agree and don't think it is an ammo issue. I will contact S&W and follow up again once I get their feedback

I forgot to mention that per Bob's comments....I did check everything after a good cleaning and it appears to be functioning fine now. I will run all this by S&W before I take it back to the range.

Roger....I have seen some awfully unsafe actions on the range so I try not to join that crowd.

Well, I went back to the range and after going through 3 mags without issue, the failure to fire reappeared. I have now sent it back to S&W for evaluation. I will let all know what they come up with.

It might just need a little breaking in. My first FS 9 did that a few times when new, but eventually overcame it.
