"QR" Code on my new Shield 9
I was fortunate to find a Shield 9 at my LGS a few days ago and I snapped it up. Serial number prefix is HPT, and it was test fired at the factory on 7/18/2013. I notice that there is a "QR" bar code on the plate containing the serial number. It is too small for my iPhone 4S to scan, but I inspected it with a jewelers loop and its definitely a QR code.
Does anyone have any idea why they would put a QR code (that is to small to scan) there?
I'm beginning to wonder if there is an RFID chip buried in there as well....LOL

Are you referring to the location of the serial number on the gun itself? If so my 1+ year old Shield 40 does not have a QR code in my gun's serial number space, on the right side of the frame, above the grip. It would be nice to know what that code shows, serial number, model number, or ?.

Is it possible that it is too small to scan with an iPhone, but perfectly able to be scanned with a better scanner?
Those things are used, in most cases, for easy inventory control, whether it is being tracked as it goes through the factory, or whether it is in the armory of a large agency or government.

I have one on my .40 Shield. It is either to small for a QR reader or my Droid X scan will not work on it.

My shield 40 doesn't have one. Bought 5 weeks ago. Don't remember the exact test fire date but was pretty recent.

I don't know about S&W, but the QR codes on FN's take you to their website. Just have to find a scanner good enough to read it.

5/13 on mine and my Shield 9 does not have a QR code on the serial number plate. Must have been a pretty recent change.

Got my 9mm shield with the same date as pvq with a HPT serial # and the QR code on it. Maybe this is what the future will be with the S&W guns and the QR code.

QR Code on M&P9c
I bought an M&P9c almost 2 years after i bought a full size M&P9. The 9c does have a QR code next to the serial number and my full size does not. I did manage to scan the code with My Galaxy Note 4 (I had an iphone 4 that was not able to) and it came up with a numeber. 11021377... not sure what that means.
