I just purchased an M&P 22. I need to get a 9mm companion and can't decide on the M&P or XDM. I also need to purchase a holster for the 22, and was wondering if the M&P 9mm and 22 would take the same holster? Is it correct the XDM weighs 32 oz and the M&P weighs 24 oz? A half pound difference? I think the XDM looks cooler, but having a 22 and 9mm M&P makes more sense. Help please.

I have a M&P 9 full size & M&P 22 pistol. They share the same Blade Tech Revolution holster perfectly. All Springfield pistols have intrigued me but I can't get past the grip safety. I absolutely HATE the idea of it and that's the only thing keeping me from buying an XDS 45 or other XD.

I have the answer for you...

Get the M&P 40 compact.

Then get a .357 and a 9mm barrel for it so you have three guns.

Then get an x-grip adapter and some full size mags and you end up with 6 guns (kinda - sorta). :D

I have 8 of the M&P pistols so far. I like them. The trigger is easy to polish to make it great. They are reliable, and they are inexpensive.

And the M&P has a changeable backstrap that your .22 doesn't have, and it's striker fired instead of hammer fired like your .22. Other than that they are pretty close to the same.

.

Rent both of them and try them. I really like the sights on the XDM. When I shot my daughter's friends XDM in .40 I liked the trigger a lot and I found the fiber optic front sight really nice. I ended up trading my .40 (another brand) for my 9c and I don't regret it. I still have my eye on the XDs in 9mm though. But what someone else loves you might hate and vis versa. They are both good guns so go with the one that you like the most.

Don't know about the M&P but I own 2 full size XDM's, one in 9mm and one in 40 S&W. They shoot to point of aim and have been totally reliable.

I have to recommend the M&P but I've never shot or even handled an XDM so take that into consideration. I have an M&P40 & a 40C & they're great pistols. They feel good in the hand, accurate & reliable.

The grip safety just kills the XD for me. I have seen a few people under time pressure come out of the holster and heard nothing instead of a bang.

Baffles me why it exists really, and other than that they shoot great - as well as any other defensive pistol I have shot.

If the grip safety doesn't bother you, rent or borrow both and shoot them. You will soon know which one fits your hand better… just remember to try all three straps on the M&P - I know a few big guys that like the smallest strap, so don't just rule it out.

I totally agree with this. If not for the grip safety I'd probably already own a couple XD variants. Love the look, feel, sights and trigger on the Springfields - HATE the grip safety.

I like them both. However I LOVE THE GRIP SAFETY. it has never gotten in the way of shooting. I have an XD9 service and XDS. Both have been super reliable. Qualified for my CCW with the XD9 in fact. The grip safety is a great feature that won't allow a gun to fire ever unless its depressed. This works great for IWB re-holstering and its a safety that never needs to be physically turned off in a bad situation. Its really an added comfort that doesn't get in the way. I have a Shield as well so i am not here promoting XD's but they are fantastic.

Most people that say they hate the grip safety have never even fired an XD with one. I am not saying the posters here have not, just saying most people. It depresses so easily i am not sure how anyone can say different. You can't even feel it. When you grip the gun, its activated. No moving around to find it, or readjustment.. Just grip the gun and you won't notice its there. At least i can't. I really like the idea of a passive safetly like this instead of one you have to conscienously turn off.

I have a XDm and 2 M&Ps, both are great guns but I shoot my M&Ps better, don't know why...just do. Try em both before you buy one if at all possible.

I would say that the ability to use the same holster for both (per BillK01's post) is a very big plus. I owned a XDm 5.25" 9mm for a while and I liked it a lot and shot it very well. However, for me the stock grip texture looks like it would give a good grip but I still found it slippery, especially compared to the texture on the backstrap on my new M&P 9L C.O.R.E. (which I love). My XDm's grip was stippled by a custom smith. The M&P grip is very easily, attractively and effectively improved by adding a Talon grip, but I doubt same would adhere very well to a XDm (due to lack of smooth surface area).

I have both an M&P 40 and an XDm 9mm compact. I got a fantastic deal on the XDm so I had to buy it. To me, the XDm was "ready" out of the box, and the M&P took me a few hundred rounds to wear in the trigger a bit and then I bought the apex stuff. They are both great guns, but a local gun smith made a good point: In 15 years when I need some work done to my gun, the fact that the M&P has a lifetime warranty, and that it is common in LE settings, I will have Access to tons of parts over the XDm, not sure how true that is but eh. Don't feel bad to try something new out though, the XDm is a solid choice

I've owned several of both pistols...M&Ps and XD/XDMs...and my preference is for the M&P line.

The XD/XDM pistols are good guns...but they don't feel as good in my hand as does the M&P. I like using the small palm swell/grip adapter on M&P pistols, and the texture of the XDM pistols is a little more uncomfortable to me. The bore axis is higher on XD/XDM pistols, giving it a different, upward-twisting recoil impulse than the M&P (or it seems so to me.) That's a plus for the M&Ps.

SA's customer service is top notch, so they will take care of any issues, as will S&W. That's a tie, IMO.

The XDMs are usually more expensive than the M&Ps, at least in shops around here. So, that's a plus for the M&Ps.

The final consideration for me is, S&W is made in America and the XDMs have "Made in Croatia" in a couple of places on them. I prefer to buy American products when I can. So, that's a plus for the M&Ps.

Overall, my choice is the M&P line of pistols.

The grip safety on the XD is not a problem. There are extended versions if that is a concern. It has a nice trigger and it has some capacity.

The M&P is pretty much fool proof in the way it comes stock, at least mine was. With an Apex FSS it is on par with the XDm and made in the USA.

I find I shoot them equally although my comparison was XD45 to M&P 9. They both shoot well at 15 to 25 yards.

I have to agree with this. I have an XDm in 40 caliber and 3 1911's and have NEVER had any problem with the grip safety "locking me out". However, I have had issues with that STUPID FLIPPY TRIGGER on the M&P "locking me out". A result of having skinny fingers and hitting the trigger high.

BTW, the XDm was my very first semi and I took a lot of time trying rentals out before settling on the XDm. Tried a Glock 19 and found it didn't point naturally for me and had the styling of a 2 x 4. Tried a Walther P99 and just hated the trigger, however that was mostly an issue with a rental that needed a good detail cleaning because the trigger didn't reset consistently. Tried the Sig Sauer P250 and wasn't at all impressed, trigger was gritty and didn't like the grip. The two finalists were the M&P and XDm and the XDm won because it pointed just perfectly and didn't "lock me out".

The grip safety on the XD and XDm models makes sense to me because the XD and XDm models' strikers are fully cocked when you pull and release the slide. This arrangement is very different than the M&P or the Glock.

Where the grip safety does not make as sense to me is in the XDS models. The XDS models are more like the Glock and the M&P as it only has the striker cocked a percentage when you pull and release the slide. When you pull the trigger it then fully cocks the striker and eventually releases it.

So I am not sure why they put a grip safety on the XDS except that they wanted a safety on the gun and perhaps they wanted it be more passive in nature than a slide safety that needed to be swiped. Or maybe they wanted to be like their other models for familiarity for folks who have the XD and XDm models.

Xds45 for me. I tried Glock,M&P,Xds and went home with the xds. Grip safety was a plus for me and it just felt so much better in my hand. No issues before and post recall.

The grip angle is different on the XD compared to Glock and M&P. I have no comfortable place for my weak hand thumb while shooting two thumbs forward.
I'm a Glock and M&P guy.
