Can't Decide - M&P vs XDM 9mm

Thanks for all the replies. I'm leaning towards an M&P pro series 9mm with night sights. I think I can get it for about $600. The S&W site says the pro series bridges the gap between main production and the Performance Center, but they don't really say what the difference is between production and pro. Other than the sights, do you think they are the same gun? Also no one commented on the weight difference. I checked the S&W and SA specs and the M&P is 8 oz lighter than the XDM. That's a big difference?

I blame that darn grip safety!

Just kidding. I've fondled the SA and it never seemed 8oz heavier to me but I suppose it's possible.

$600 for a pro series? Ouch.

Do you qualify for first responder pricing? EMS? Maybe a volunteer fireman? Work security? Captain a boat?

First responders can get M&P's with night sights for $455. Standard M&P's are $399. Shields for $335.

I wouldn't buy a pro, I understand the difference in in the trigger. With a bit of sand paper and a stone, you can do a 10 minute trigger job on the M&P and have the trigger smooth and breaking like glass. You know, like the factory SHOULD do while they have it in their hands....

Good luck in your decision, then buy the other one anyway. Life is too short to limit how many guns you own!!! :D

That is odd. I haven't fired the original model but have fired several XDMs. They didn't seem a half-pound heavier than my M&P9. In one case I fired the two guns side-by-side on an indoor range that specifies 5-rounds only. Never noticed any difference in weight in the course of about an hour of shooting. Of course the guns were lying on the bench when not being fired - not worn on the belt. Putting them in a holster on your belt would tell the tale quickly, but the numbers for both guns clearly state 32 oz. vs 24 oz.

I just purchased an M&P 22. I need to get a 9mm companion and can't decide on the M&P or XDM. I also need to purchase a holster for the 22, and was wondering if the M&P 9mm and 22 would take the same holster? Is it correct the XDM weighs 32 oz and the M&P weighs 24 oz? A half pound difference? I think the XDM looks cooler, but having a 22 and 9mm M&P makes more sense. Help please.

I have never owned an XDM, but for what it is worth my Shield 9 mm is more accurate than my XD 45.

Strange but my conceal weapon shoots tighter groups than my full size XD45 and my Shield has XS sights.

Personally, I would buy the M&P for myself and the XDM for my wife that way I would end up with both guns. :)

What is the issue or problem with a grip safety....we all seem to love our 1911's dearly and they use a grip safety....

I don't get it. And I own both XD and M&P's ...don't see it as a problem.

Like the magazine safety, everyone has an opinion. ;) You would have to have a pretty lame hold on an XDM or XDS to not deactivate the grip safety, but some people worry about that. Then there is the "It's-just-something-more-to-go-wrong!" crowd. :D

You have answered your own question, but in case you forgot I'll remind you, get the M&P. You're welcome :)

I've had the XD and Ihave the M&P full size and compact 9mm and 22lr. now. I shoot the M&P's better. The recoil is more managable with the M&P's. The XD's barrel is considerably higher in the gun than the M&P's. I like the looks better, I like the options better. Two people I shoot with have changed over the the M&P's also for some of the same reasons. I'm looking for a new CORE now.

I wonder what the answer to your question would be on the XDM Forum? ;) Just sayin that the opinions on this forum might be a bit biased. :D

Agree. That's why I asked the question on this forum. I think I like the M&P better than the XDM. I thought a little positve reinforcement would help me convince myself that I should purchase an M&P - that I don't have time to shoot and don't need. BTW - I can't believe the prices quoted above. I thought $600 OTD was pretty good for a gun that lists for $679. I generally use galleryofguns for my purchases. Is there a better source on line? I live in Northern VA, just outside of DC. Most of the LGSs sell for close to list?

Do they even let you have guns that close to DC?? (just kidding) Don't know what's available out there but Bud's has been a good source for me when I haven't been able to find what I want (for the price I want) locally. Discount Guns for Sale - Buds Gun Shop
