I'm looking at the M&P Shield. Does anyone have any suggestions for a Laser Sight ? I've seen the CT LG-489 and the Laser Max. Both seem very nice. Is either one better or worse than the other ? Thanks for the input.

I have no experience with either products you are asking about, but I do have several CT Lasergrips, and they're fantastic. Unfortunately, they are not available for the Shield. I've heard good things about both products you are seeking, with CT being a bit more expensive. I'm sure others with more knowledge will chime in shortly. I am going to put a nice night-sight on my Shield and keep it as low profile as possible instead of going the laser route. YMMV. Regardless, as I've recently discovered, training with and without your laser is imperative; lasers don't always activate or shine through dense materials (fog, smoke, mist, gun fire, etc.).

I have the Laser Max, but I can't really compare it with the CT, since I haven't used the CT. The laser Max is okay, but not perfect. The switch is easy to activate, yet not too likely to accidentally activate. The fit to the gun is very good. I've seen people complain that theirs can be wiggled around, but mine is rock solid and seems to be part of the gun. The setting of the beam DOES seem to move around a bit from shooting. I've only been shooting with the laser on about 15-20 rounds out of each range trip. Every time I go to use it, I have to readjust the beam by an inch or 2. The adjustment is a lot coarser than you'd want it to be. Just the slightest bit that you can turn the adjustments changes the beam by a couple of inches. Because the laser is so far below the bore, parallax is a problem. It sits about 1 3/8" below the bore axis, vs your iron sights which only sit 5/8" above it. Doesn't sound like that much difference, but it means that your elevation setting is only accurate at ONE distance. Haven't tried calculating the geometry, but if you sight it in at 20 ft and shoot at 75ft, you'll be off by not just 1 5/8", but more like 10". You'll get the best results by sighting in as far away as possible. The parallax on the CT looks like it would be similar. The beam on CT grips is typically much closer to the bore axis. Would I buy it again? Well, the jury is still out on that. I can consistently hit head shots on a silhouette target 75 ft away--IF I've just adjusted the beam. So far I've found it more useful for dry firing practice than for shooting.

I had one of the first LaserMax units on my Shield and it could be wiggled very slightly. The company came out with a newer version, which they swapped out for free and it's rock solid. The beam is still on POA after a few hundred rounds. They even paid for shipping back the old one.

CT also makes a laser that mounts to the trigger guard, just like the LaserMax. The reason I didn't want the CT is when you grip the gun, the laser comes on and I want to be able practice at the range with my sights, without running down the battery. After practice, it becomes second nature to turn on the LaserMax unit as you draw.

I'm a CT fan, though you won't go wrong with either.

What I like about the CT is that when you grip, it's on. I tend to use the thumb safety, so when I draw, I'm already clicking it off. I like the idea of not having to do something else if in a panic situation.

That said, I've checked out both (using Shields belonging to friends, I currently have mine "naked"), and as long as you practice and train the muscle memory, you're going to win either way.

Oh, also...not sure about LM, but I'm pretty sure that CT gives you a free set of batteries per year for as long as you own it, as long as you register the device.

Once again the Members of the Forum have come through with great answers to my questions. Great Forum. Thanks too all.

I love CT products and they have Great Customer Service...

They just replaced a grip from one of my 1911's, no questions asked with a brand new one...

I only buy CT Lasers...

Plus with the CT you just "grip" the gun and it's on, you don't have to "push" any buttons to turn it on or off...

Buy the CT, you will love it...
