I recently picked up a second six round magazine for my Shield .40 and took it to the range today for the first time.

I was having extreme difficulty loading the sixth round in the new magazine only - it was almost impossible to get it in there, and extremely difficult to seat the magazine with the slide down when fully loaded. After a few cycles it wasn't getting any better, so I popped off the bottom plate to see what the issue might be.

The problem was immediately apparent - the magazine spring was not correctly assembled onto the follower. Rather than having the tail of the spring inserted into the hole in the follower, the spring simply nested under the follower. It was quick work to properly assemble the spring and follower, and all was well after.

If you run across a Shield magazine that just won't load to capacity, look for this assembly error!

Thanks for the tip. I just brought home a new Shield 40 tonight. And just received my two extra mags from Grabagun today.
If anyone wants to trade their new or like new 6 round mag for a new 7 round mag, PM me.

I'll check my 7 round 9mm. All the rounds load, but it needs slapped in hard on a closed slide.

Thats normal at the start if the slide is closed. Leave the mag loaded with shells and it will get easier as you go along but its always going to take some force with the slide closed.

Nature of the beast.

40 cal 6 round magazines were available on the midway usa Clearance page, for like $25ea. I picked up 2....surprising my 40 came with two 7 round mags.... I'm sure it was somebody digging through boxes with two or three guns on the counter... oh well I won't complain... now I've got two 6's and two 7's

+1, mine are still a bit stiff loading a full mag into a "closed" gun, but nowhere near what they were when it was new.

I've read of this problem on here about mag springs in backwards with not just the Shield but other models. If ya have problems with any mag good point is to check that the spring is in correctly. Might be a good idea to check and clean like ya do with the firearm first thing after you purchase. It might save some frustration. Maybe S&W imported some Chinese to assemble their magazines:D or else just poor training. Something this simple shouldn't be assembled wrong I mean 4 parts come on now.

OBTW I guess I've been lucky none of my magazines have had the spring in wrong.:)

Yes, a fresh spring always makes getting a loaded magazine in a little tougher. This one needs a good slap though. Both my loaded 8 rounders click in easily though.

Thanks for the advice. It is loaded now but might need a few trips to the range too :).

Happy Holidays guys!

both my shield and my 45 fs have tough magazines but you can still load to capacity, though i do use a speed loader to save my thumbs makes it a ton easier
