Do you have to expose these sights to light first before they glow day/night ?

No. They have Tritium vials under the fiber optics. So, they glow all the time. You just won't notice it in the day time.

I thought the tfo glow in day. What sights glow in night and day ??

They do, they "glow" in the under daylight or artificial light by transmitting that light through light tubes, they also have a tritium dot that glows under it's own power all the time but you would only see that in the dark as it's overpowered by other light sources.

I'm in the market for new sights for my shield. I've narrowed it down to the TFO's and ameriglo sw-145. Every time I think I've decided I change my mind. Currently leaning toward the TFO's, I think the only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger is a few bad reviews I've come across. Anyone have any good sources to buy either of these... in stock?

No source, but the TFOs have to be manufactured after June, 2013 to fit the Shield properly. Truglo revised the sight for the Shield at that time, earlier manufactured dates are too wide for the Shield slide. I know some have used them anyway, but they do hang over a little. I'm trying to find a set made after June to put on my Shield, but haven't found any yet.

I emailed TruGlo and was told that all of the ones currently available from dealers should be the newer revision, the correct date code is 13 EF 06 (or later). I got mine from Botach on their holiday sale and they were correct but any online retailer should have the right ones, ebay sellers may or may not as their stock could be old.

Truglo Modifies M&P TFO To Fit Shield Better ? Tacti-Cool.com

I had my shield TFO one here: Tacticool Check out his store and go to the S&W page. He does a lot of XD stuff so it dominates his website.

He was fast and the work seems to be good quality. Free install if you buy sights from him. He finished off my Apex install as well while he had the rear sight off.

Tritium has a half life of 12.32 years. That means it will be half as bright in 12.32 years. So, it will continually become less bright as time goes by. I have a set that was made in 2007 and it is still plenty bright.

I put the Meprolites on mine from the full size M&P and they look great and are very bright at night, dont take up as much real estate on the top of the slide as the TFOs do but then i didnt care about the "day time" glow, im good with white dots in the day, good thing about the Mep sights is that the rear sight has a hooked surface on the front of the rear sight, so if you practice one handed manipulations this gives an exelent surface to rack the slide from

They are night sight... So thats different, and the fact that i wanted a rear sight that allowed one hand manipulations where as the stock ramped rear sight did not, they are tritium lamps with white ring arrond them, like trijicons but the white doesnt wear off of these like trij do

Oops, missed the night sight part. Neither did I realize that the Shield sights were different from the standard M&P sights. The regular sights have the one hand feature from the factory.

I learn something new every day.

Sights that fit the Shield also fit the M&P22. I just put some TFO's on another M&P22 this week. Yellow dot rear, green dot front. (p/n TG131 ...).
