Default Holster Review: On your 6 Designs IWB kydex for FS M&P

Hi friends,
Recently (last Wednesday!) I was introduced to a new company out of San Antonio making nice looking kydex holsters with insanely fast turnaround times. I liked what I saw on their website:

Smith & Wesson Holster | On Your 6 Designs

Since I was in need of a rig for my M&P 40 for an upcoming trip I thought I'd try them out. I was worried the company would not have enough time to construct the holster (I'm a southpaw, my holsters are never in stock) and ship it out to me in time to meet my deadline of one week.

Wow, were my fears unfounded. I ordered via the website a green kydex (colors are $5 extra on sale) for a full-sized M&P at 12:30pm and had a shipping confirmation email at 1:05pm!

So, On Your 6 definitely had my attention, but would the IWB holster be any good? It was on sale for $30 (black, colors are extra) and they were already packing the box 30 minutes after my order?

So it was with a bit of trepidation that I opened the USPS priority mail flat rate box on Friday to try the holster out.

Wow....

I don't know how these guys are making any money selling these holsters for $40 much less for $30. They are definitely selling them at cost to spread the word. These guys aren't working out of their garage, they have a nice, large retail building in a nice part of town. They are employing American citizens, not illegals in a sweatshop along the border. Very impressed.

Holster details:

On Your 6 uses a thinner grade of kydex than most holstermakers. The only other maker I've seen use this thickness is Jim Murnack at FIST holsters. The thinness is what really makes the design work. It is very springy and allows the holster to conform to the curve of your hipbone as well as offering a nice snap release when you draw.

The retention was set a bit too tight (better tight than loose) to my liking but a few seconds with my heat gun around the triggerguard had it set up perfectly for my tastes. I also curved the bottom edge of the holster flap inward (at the bottom) so it wouldn't stick out in my preferred carry position of 9 o'clock.
I was very impressed with the attention to detail, the finished edges, and the included sweat guard. There was a nice roll to the holster body near the top of the slide which provides a generous sight tunnel for your aftermarket sights.

The belt clip is very sturdy, almost too sturdy. I prefer IWB holsters with leather snap loops so I can quickly remove the gun/holster combo if entering a "gunfree" zone. The clip on this holster is so stiff it will not snap over my very stiff The Wilderness Frequent Flyer belt. I have to thread the belt through the clip as if it were a loop. Not a deal-breaker, but a slight minus.

The holster is adjustable for cant by loosening the two screws on the clip and setting the cant to your preference. I have it set at max forward cant in the photos.

I like that the holster provides a full firing grip when you grip the pistol without making you shift your grip as you draw. It's obvious the folks at On Your 6 Designs are gun toters as well as holster designers.

I plan on buying a few more rigs before they raise their prices, if you are in the market for a IWB holster that works well and won't break the budget I advise you to give these Texans a hard look.

Stay Safe.

+1 for On your 6 Designs. I would compare these to PJ Holsters, but $20 cheaper. These guys from Texas are making a name for themselves.

I make holsters... I don't know how they are making money either. I'm guessing part of it is they are making their own clip there by the look of it.

Charging extra for colors probably helps them - there isn't a lot of difference in raw material cost of basic colors for the most part. Certainly not $5... until you get into the well done camouflage print. One I am looking at right now is $47.50 for a 1'x2' piece.

Also only using one eyelet strikes me as odd, given that the holster isn't particuly molded to the shape of the gun, a single eyelet strikes me as a real stress point, and also a single eyelet I would think would allow the holster to flex around the gun and possibly prematurely wear the finish - particuly a thin material. Eyelets aren't expensive at all and drilling an extra hole isn't time consuming either.

More than anything, that single stress point makes me a little nervous. There are two points on a holster of that style, one that could be potentially disastrous at worst and embarrassing at best... the points where the plastic is joined, and the point(s) where the holster attaches to the belt.

Looks like a pretty nice holster for the money. I do like the large single clip they use.

I also notice the mag release isn't covered. Did you ask for that?

This looks like an interesting holster. I'm not a fan of Kydex, but I'm also considering switching to IWB from my normal OWB. This might fit the bill.

None of my holsters cover the mag catch on any of my guns. It has never been a problem. Do the holsters you make cover it?

Upon further inspection, this picture concerns me:

I wonder why they don't make it fit the muzzle better?

I generally do, but I'm starting to consider offering it as a configuration option.

Left handers running with a mag release on the left side of the gun away from the body (OP's rig seems to be configured that way) is where I would prefer it be covered.

I'm a lefty. I have yet to have a mag come loose, but past performance is no guarantee of future certainty.

I wonder how it would affect the way the gun carries to have that covered?

I have one of these and used it for about a 3 weeks or so. I found it sat a bit to high for me in the appendix position which is what I bought it for. It's not a bad holster by any means, just not what I was looking for. Going to order a Cooks Holster due to it being cant adjustable also.
