This probably the most embassed moments in my life, 74 years. I just acquired a M&P9 yesterday and was doing basic tear down in semi-dark conditions to see if I could under low light situations, and guess what, I could do the tear down, but with the reassembly the barrel was placed in upside down, and now, I'm looking at a "really" jammed pistol... Having owned a gunshop for 30 years, sold out in 1995, I feel like an idiot. Any, ideas of disassembly to get barrell back in battery.

Thanks, Carl

Don't be upset - could happen to anyone. Impressed that you could got as far as you did in low light. If it were me, I'd spray some CLP in the slide and gently try to wiggle the slide off holding the gun is different positions and tapping it on the side of a table. I would not try to force anything. Eventually you'll get the right combination of gravity and tapping and moderate force to get some movement. I assume the mag is out also. Just my 2 cents. Good luck and soldier on....

Didn't think that was possible.

So I assume it is locked up enough you can't get the sear take down lever down also? I know there is a way to take the slide cap off and remove the striker to allow the slide to move, just not sure how to do it. Maybe once you get the striker assembly out the slide would move enough. I'm sure someone will be along that knows how to remove the cap.

Slide has to be removed from from to take the striker and end cover cap off.

Ok, I just attempted to duplicate with my M&P45. It looks like you forced the barrel over the locking block. Try this, if the takedown lever is rotated down tap GENTLY on the rear of the slide with a non-marring mallet. The slide should come off. If the takedown lever is up then you will need to get the slide back far enough to rotate it down. If you don`t feel comfortable doing this, then don`t. Get it to a qualified gunsmith.

Oh, yeah, don`t forget to check for empty and then pull the trigger or push down the sear release lever before tapping GENTLY.

Carl,
There must be something in the sunspot cycle this week. I just read about someone else doing this and I tried it myself and you actually can install the barrel upside down!

The good news is you can easily take the slide off again if you simply remove the slide "Glock" style.

  1. With an empty magazine in the gun, pull the slide back and lock it
  2. Turn the takedown lever to the "down" position
  3. Release the slide lock and slowly let the slide go forward
  4. When the slide goes all the way forward, pull the trigger
  5. Push the mag release button
  6. The slide should now go all the way forward and come off the gun

If you don't have a mag safety, you may not need to have a mag in the magwell and you can pull the trigger by itself.

There is just enough of a lip or edge on the top front of the chamber area of the barrel to hold the guide rod. I joined quite a few years ago and lurk more than I post.

I WOULD DO JUST WHAT motorcyclejoe SUGGESTED (GUYS NAMED JOE ARE REALLY SMART….lol), EXCEPT I WOULD SPRAY THE JAMMED AREA LIBERALLY WITH KROIL, AND LET IT SIT OVERNIGHT, BEFORE I BEGAN THE GENTLE TAPPING WITH THE WOODEN HANDLE OF A SMALL HAMMER, OR AN OLD SCREW DRIVER. I WOULD HOLD THE WEAPON IN ONE HAND, ROTATING IT PERIODICALLY WITH REGARD TO THE FORCE OF GRAVITY, UNTIL YOU DETECT MOVEMENT. WIGGLE GENTLY, UNTIL YOU FIGURE OUT THE DIRECTION IN WHICH TO MOVE THE BARREL TO FREE IT. DON'T FEEL BAD. I'M 73 YO. I USED TO BE ABLE TO DISASSEMBLE AND RE-ASSEMBLE A GARAND OR AN M16A1 IN THE DARK. NOW I CAN'T EVEN FIND THE WEAPON IN THE DARK…..

I am a range instructor at my department. Last year, we had a guy do this with the full size M&P 9. Took us a while, but we were finally able to get it undone.

Don't feel any worse, I can't find the dark.

FWIW, the "similar thread" at the bottom of the page titled "barrel upside down" has posts by 4 or 5 people who did the same thing. One post from Dtrac states, as to an MP 40 " Long story short I slid the slide back a little and on the right side of the gun between the slide and body you will see a silver looking bar. I took a piece of thin wood and moved it to the rear and the slide came off, installed the barrel in correctly and works fine."

That escalated quickly . . .

YOUR RIGHT, MUSS MUGGINS. I LOOK AT IT THIS WAY. CARL HAS BEEN A MEMBER FOR 9 YEARS, AND HE HAS NEVER HAD TO ASK FOR HELP BEFORE. HE CAN'T BE ALL THAT STUPID…..

HE CAME HERE HUMBLY ASKING FOR HELP. HE HAS ALREADY STATED THAT HE'S EMBARRASSED. IMHO, ITS NOT IN THE SPIRIT OF THIS FORUM TO RIDICULE ANYONE SEEKING INFORMATION. HOW OFTEN HAVE WE INVITED NEW MEMBERS TO FEEL FREE TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS THEY WISH--NO MATTER HOW SIMPLISTIC ? ? ? I OFTEN DO IT MYSELF…..

I SOMETIMES LOSE PATIENCE WITH STATEMENTS MADE TO ME, BUT I THINK THAT WE (ME INCLUDED) NEED TO TRY TO TREAT EACH OTHER WITH MORE KINDNESS. JUST MY 2 CENTS……...

I meet people all the time who are afraid to join in on forum discussions. They are concerned that they'll ask a question and get ridiculed rather than helped. This is a perfect example of why they don't post.

The guy made a mistake and asked for help. The video may have helped, but was remarkably insulting. Then several other members piled on. We all have our days. I hope none of you ever need help in the future.

I tried to get my 45 barrel in upside down, but it won't fit. I hope the OP is able to get his fixed up.

Rastoff is right: OP had the courage to ask, let's respect that and help if we can.

I've had some disassembly - reassembly disasters too.

Years ago I decided to completely disassemble my Remington model 1100 shotgun. Couldn't get the bloody thing back together.

I was at my gunsmith's front door at 9:00 pm with a paper bag full of gun parts. When he stopped laughing, he invited me in for a beer and told me I wasn't the first.

That was the kindest thing he could have said.

Forty five minutes later, I was on my way home with my reassembled shotgun.
