Do you turn your red dot off when not using it?
I have a Trijicon RMR. I was wondering if it was better to leave it on and avoid wear on the of/on buttons.
Any opinions?

Have you looked at the battery life?

Do you leave your flashlight on when not using it? If you haven't noticed the red dot sights have batteries in them! The battery powers the light! Why would you even ask????

Well...because some of the red-dots have astronomical battery life, and some, okay a lot, of LEO and others leave them on for instant use, and just replace the batteries every year. You know, like replacing the batteries in your smoke detectors when the daylight savings time changes, or every year on new years, or whatever. Knowing full well that they have plenty of life left. That, and the good red dots have "auto-off" features when the unit doesn't move for a pre-determined amount of time. Greatly extending the already amazing life. Does your flashlight have that?
Clear enough?

What is the LED RMR battery life?
The RM01 and RM02 models are rated at two years typical use.

I turn mine off. You're not going to wear out the buttons unless you use a rock to smash them on/off

I have an original Deltapoint. It has no manual on/off switch. It has a motion sensor switch. If it's sitting in the safe, it's off. I've had it for over 3 years and I'm on my second battery. (In all fairness, I don't shoot it much anymore, I have a different gun and the Core with the DP is my wife's gun now and she doesn't shoot as much as I do).

If it has an on-off switch, I turn it off.
If the sight doesn't have an on-off switch I follow manufacturers instructions.
One of the neatest things I ever bought was a little battery tester....no telling how many batteries I changed that were still good, but I didn't want to take a chance at the range or when in use .

It depends on your use. Once a month for a range trip? Turn it off.
I carry my RMR 07 almost every day. I want to know it is always on and that I haven't forgotten to turn it back on because of a brain fart. I leave it on, sometimes just adjusting the brightness depending on the environment.
It is also my primary home defense gun, so I want it on at night too. It doesn't make sense for me to be turning it off/on.
Yes, you can wear out anything, including the rubber cover to a switch, if you use it too much.
If I know I will not have the gun on me for a week, say while traveling, I turn it off and leave it in the safe.
I change the battery once a year, even though it has a 2+ year life span.

I have an RM07 on a M&P40c and a Glock 30sf. Both installed November of 2014. Both are range guns, I have never turned them off.

Yes, I do turn mine off. So far the switch hasn't broken and I am not worried about it either.

Thanks for all the replies. Based on opinions I'll leave mine on and replace the battery every year.

off when not in use. If the switch can't take it, they usually have "lifetime" warranties.

If this is a serious or potentially serious use firearm, leave it on unless it is in the safe. This is similar to the loaded chamber question: you will not have time in an encounter to chamber a round or turn on the sight. If the sight will not stay on, or eats batteries, it is not suitable for use other than as a range toy. (I am not aware of any problematic reputation with this sight, so I would confidently leave it on and swap batteries yearly or so.)
