Default No safety frame plug available... Bodyguard 380

Bummer, I just called S&W to see if I could get a frame plug for my new Bodyguard 380 with safety, because I wanted to remove it. Unfortunately, I was told there is no such thing and that the new frames with the cutout for it are just that. Designed to be used on either production model. Before you ask why didn't I buy the NTS version, I live in MA and it's not on the current roster. I wonder if a third party will make a frame plug for it?

LOL I'm left handed so it's always off! It just would have been nice to remove it and plug it like you can on the full size M&P's... I'm not worried about it coming on, as it takes effort to toggle on and off.

I saw a post somewhere, might have been here, where the owner removed the safety on his S&W .380 (couldn't recall if it was the laser or no laser model) and had all kinds of problems. He eventually put the safety back on. I'm a lefty too and just leave it in the off position. In a year of pocket carry, w/holster, the safety has never slipped into the on position by itself.

I had a, supposedly certified S&W smith, switch the thumb safety from a .45 FS to a .40 FS, both guns had issues then, luckily it was remedied by going back to the original set up on both guns.

That's strange there is no part ie plug. My body guard I got a month ago is a no safety no laser body guard and it has a plug where the safety would of been equipped.

Does S&W make their .380 w/o the safety specifically for the LAPD or am I confusing this w/another modification they made for this agency?

Last I knew, the SKU# Bodyguard made for LAPD sales was a regular gun shipped without the thumb safety (no plug of any sort to fill spot), and with the laser battery removed and loose in the box (they didn't approve use of laser). One of our guys ordered one of the LAPD SKU# models and that's how his Bodyguard arrived.

It appears no, not withstanding beating out the roll pins pulling the action out. Really hard to say. Shot some pictures for you to make an educated guess.

Thanks for the pics! It's hard to tell, but since the customer service rep mentioned they now use one frame for both models (with or without safety) I would think it's a removable plug. Unfortunately these aren't yet available in MA, so I can't handle one to take a look

FWIW, while I've replaced a broken FP in a BG slide, I've not yet had the opportunity or time to go to the BG .380 armorer class (4hrs).

Yes, I'd imagine the BG 380 is like the M&P series in that the rear of the frame has to be disassembled to a degree to slip the plug into place.

I was warned, however, that the design and frame of the BG .380 isn't like that of the M&P pistols series, meaning there's more separate parts (and springs) instead of "assemblies". I'd not be inclined to experiment in disassembling one before taking the class. I hate loose springs, not to mention risking damaging things without knowing the easiest way to remove and install them.

Kind of like how I felt the first time I studied the armorer manual for the Walther PPS.

I hate the safety ...on a DAO pistol it is so unneeded. I never use mine.
hope the no safety version comes out here in MA

Just wanted to share my experience with S&W and my attempts to make my BG380 safety less.

Right after it was announced at shot show, I called S&W for a plug. They said not available yet, call back in a couple weeks. I did, same line.

A couple weeks more I call back and am told it's not a plug, it's an entire frame. Can I buy one? Nope, all getting used up for production, call back in a couple weeks. I did, I am told they can't mail a frame and that I'll have to send the gun in for service. They send me the prepaid shipping label and I waive goodbye to the gun.

A couple weeks go by and it shows up at my door. I'm excited, what's it going to look like? I open the box, gun looks just as I sent it. Still has a safety. I call in, what's the big deal? S&W says they can't remove any safety off a firearm. But you can sell plugs so the customer can? Correct. Can I buy a frame? No. Internal part numbers only, can't be bought. What if my frame becomes damaged? It will be repaired to the condition it originally left the factory (meaning with safety). So what are my options? None.

Thank you S&W for the run around and still no help. The only option I can find is to buy another gun. Yeah that's not happening, they successfully dissatisfied this customer.

Mine has a safety. I never bother with it. I don't think about it. I do not dwell on it. I don't dream about it at night. It stays off. It has never moved on its own. I doubt it ever will. So just pretend its not there and every thing will be sunny days with butterflies and bunny rabbits .

Or I can do as I wish and probably sell the gun and just carry my beretta pico that doesn't back out pins and doesn't have a safety.

Yeah you can do that. I have a Ruger LCP with the stainless slide. It does not have a safety but in my opinion the M&P bodyguard 380 is twice the gun the Ruger is. The little Smith & Wesson is one of my favorite carry guns.

As an MA resident, i just purchased my new M&P BG380 last month. i've been to the range 3 times with it and have shot aprx 320rds. i started carrying it with safety off.

curiously enough, the only MA version on the website has a different number than mine (mine being 10178). the trigger is not only long but very hard. not having a trigger scale, i tried finding out what trigger pull difference between MA & non versions was, no luck.

i tried searching for non MA FACTORY BG trigger components, no luck. So I called S&W last week and was told that ALL BG's (regardless of state compliant or not) have the same exact trigger components and weight is between 10-12lbs.

moral of my story, having such a heavy pull, i have no problems carrying it with safety off. also, the safety is so unobtrusive it doesnt bother me that its there.

My M&P 380 has a heavy trigger pull but I don't believe its that hard. I will try and measure it as soon as I can find my scale. I have misplaced it in the garage.

A much more simpler and practical option is available. Just pretend the safety isn't there and don't use it.

Exactly!
I'll never understand why some go to great lengths to remove or disable it when, if left alone, a TS will never become an issue.

Go ahead, you can whatever you want and I'll carry what I desire as well. Thanks for the concern.
