Shield failure to feed issues
So, took my brand new performance center shield (9MM) out to the range today. Got through the first 40-50 rounds of Remington UMC (Some FMJ, and a little bit of JHP), no problems. Once I got to around 60ish rounds, the slide would start locking back often every 3 rounds or so, requiring I give it a bit of a push to get it back into battery. Each time it would lock back, it would lock back further than the slide lock catches even.
Before taking it to the range, I did lubricate it on the 7 points the manual describes (probably even a little too generously, honestly) so I'm assuming it's not a lubrication issue?
On a side note, I found the performance center gets quite a lot of copper fouling, at least for me from this first run. Not just inside the barrel, but also some fouling near the slide's port holes and even on the outside top of the barrel in a few areas, which I'm still trying to work to get off.
Anyway, anyone have any ideas as to what the cause could be here, or any of the issues I had my first time out?
Wish my first message here wasn't with problems, as I had planned to sign up to express some happier news

Did you clean it before shooting, or just oil it?
How many rounds at this point?
I would give it a good clean and lube. If you haven't cleaned it the stuff they put on from the factory is pretty nasty, kind of gummy. Even still, it's going to break in for the first 100-200. If you clean it after 200ish rounds and it's still having an issue then I would start to wonder.
Make sure you're gripping tightly and not limp wristing, and not riding the slide with any part of your hand or fingers/thumb.
The dirtiness is the down side of the Porting...but if you didn't clean it first, you may find the visit to the range after cleaning it's a little easier to clean the next time, the stuff from the factory, I think grabs the dirt more.

Call S&W and get a Fedex return label. The problem may be a bad locking block, simple but not available to purchase yourself.

Just some pictures of the fowling from just those first 50-60 rounds.

^^^^ Him speakum truth
Clean the guides and rails with a solvent, then lube them. Get down into the grooves. The barrel probably isn't the problem but clean all of it anyway. It would be nice to blame just the mag but that doesn't seem to be the problem. It's a little soon to say, "Send it back to S&W'.

I did clean it, and gave it a good lube with some Slip 2000 I've used before.
I also was firing the same way during the last few rounds (while it was having issues) as I was when I started, so I don't think it was limp wristing, probably.

I have a non PC Shield in 9mm. Given I live in CA, PC has a double meaning.
The slide "hanging up" before going into battery when new is a common problem. I too had it but only when press checking or if I "rode the slide" when chambering. It worked itself out after a few hundred rounds.
I would agree with the others. Give it a good, thorough cleaning with a proper solvent (I do this will all my new handguns), then a proper lubing with a good gun oil/grease. I also disassemble and clean all my magazines.
I am a bit confused by your comment "it would lock back further than the slide lock catches even". You mean it locks back all the way to the rear?
Was UMC the only ammo brand you shot? I'll assume it was 115gr. I've haven't shot any UMC in my Shield. I haven't had issues with UMC in my other handguns but have had intermittent problems with Winchester White Box (as an example). Point being that sometimes these things can be ammo related.
Keep us posted on your progress.
Welcome to the forum and congrats on acquiring an outstanding firearm despite the issues you've encountered.

Thanks for the feedback.
Yes, I meant it locks all the way back when the slide does get stuck. So far back, it's back slightly beyond the point the slide catch even holds it. So basically as far back as possible.
Maybe it needs a little more lubrication then I suppose, although I tried to give it a good coating before I went out to the range. Probably too much, to be honest.
My general process is:
Slip 2000 on the outside of the barrel, and a very light coating after cleaning on the inside.
Slip 2000 EWL on the rails (more like a motor oil consistency), to keep it smooth.
Some cheaper Mpro 7 to just wipe down the outside and prevent external rust.
UMC was the only ammo I fired, 115 grain. I fired some of both FMJ and JHP, since I carry JHP. Most of the rounds fired, over 50 of them, were FMJ.
However, most of the rounds fired towards the end were JHP rounds. That being said, when I started firing rounds, at the beginning of the 60-75 rounds, I did start with some JHP without problems -- so, unsure if that's in any way related.
I'll see about taking it to the range again, Tuesday night when I have some more time. I definitely want to put more rounds through it before I feel comfortable carrying it. If it reproduces, perhaps I'll need to give smith and wesson a call.

Any chance it is the ammo? I used to have failure to loads on my BG380 but only when using Aguila ammo. I thought the issue was with my mags until i switched ammo

I don't think it's the ammo because the slide is going all the way back when it was starting the lock.
I also think it's likely not the magazines either, as there wasn't a problem for the first 50 rounds. Makes me think maybe the lubrication was a little to light for it, and I should increase it for next time.
Either way, I'll make sure to continually test and confirm what I can here.

I have not been "following" the threads, but there have been a rash of stuck slide threads started on the Shield in this forum lately. You might find a resolution among the responses. Good luck.
