Please help? I am a first time gun owner. After cleaning my S&W 9mm Shield for the first time it appears I put the recoil spring in backwards. Now I can't get the slide to lock open or off of the gun.

Are you remembering to fold down the yellow lever internal? Hmm, didn't know you could put it in backwards but I only have the 45 so maybe different?

How did you manage to do that? If you were able the install the slide back on the frame I believe the rsa was compressed to flip the take down lever, so why it is not compressing now? Can you rack the slide?

I am not sure if it is actually in backwards, I was at the range when I cleaned the gun and reassembled it. There was another club member who was there, he took a look at it and thought that was the problem. I can rack the slide but it will not lock open. At first I was unable to flip th take down lever but now I have it down.

I put my slide on backwards and when I shot it, I poked a bloody hole in my right arm. I wonder if I install my trigger backwards if I'll have to push it forwards to make it go bang. Also, if I install my magazines backwards and inside out if I can suck bullets back from the target? These questions and more will be answered on the next episode of Ripley's Mythbusters or not!

When I was a new gun owner I kept the operators manual open to the appropriate page whenever I disassembled or reassembled the gun. You might want to do that for awhile, until you're comfortable that you're sure you can do it correctly.

Don't feel bad, there have been other threads here over the past few years where others have done the exact same thing.
