Sold my 1988 Gen 2 G19 a few years ago after Glock Inc Frankensteined it by putting on a Gen 3 Grip because they said the frame was cracked. It wasn't but I won't get sidetracked here.
Since that time I have purchased 3 Shield 9s and a Shield .45

Fast forward and I picked up a barely used Gen 4 for a great price last week. Shot it side by side with one of my Shields this morning. Great gun, accurate and dead reliable but to my surprise the Shield is the softer shooting gun, at least in my hands. Gotta love the Shield.

Sorry to hear what happened with your old Gen2 G19. I still have mine and it's still going strong.

Along with my Gen2, I also have a Gen3 G19 as well as a Gen4 G26 and my 2012 Shield and would have said that the Shield's recoil is on par with the G26, with the G19 being smoother...
But that's why many of us refer to it as 'Perceived Recoil'. Ten people could shoot the same 2 or 3 firearms and all ten could give a different response. :)

Glad you like your Shields... I've enjoyed mine for the past 5 years now.

My Glock started out a Gen 2. I was loading a magazine and chipped the mag well. Took it to Glock (15 miles away), they replaced everything for free while I waited.

The recoil of my Shield 45 is about the same as my Glock 19. The Shield is narrower with a different grip angle so I'm sure that's part of it.

Have a Gen 4 G26 also, and I think that too is less than the G19

I have a Shield 9 & a G19 gen4. Both are fun to shoot. Both feel different, I probably would say the G19 shoots softer but its heavier, especially when fully loaded with 15 rds.
The Shield is much easier to carry and mine has a better trigger than the g19.
I once shot a friends Bersa Thunder 380, and it was snappy and unpleasant.

I didn't shoot my new Shield 9 for many months due to my RA in the wrists and the fear of pain. After finally getting up enough nerve (and drugs) to try it, I was pleasantly surprised with the control I had. Even fired a mag one handed to see if I could in an emergency. Then went back into the house and took a Celebrex. :)

Very interesting discussion. I think the Shield is a VERY smooth shooter. While I have only shot a few rounds out of a rented G19, I have been considering a G19 to replace my P320, I felt they all felt pretty smooth.

Then again my first pistol was a Sig 40SW.

The 9mm Shield is a good shooting gun with manageable two handed recoil.

With the same 9mm ammo, my G19 is a better shooting gun with less perceptible recoil.

Try shooting each gun one handed to test perceived recoil in a five shot rapid cadence burst measuring accuracy on a paper target at 7 yards. The one with less recoil should shoot better, and faster.

Physics does not support the notion that 9mm Shield recoil is similar to a G19, but no one can control one's perceptions or emotions other than the shooter. Perception is reality.

Why are you considering replacing your P320?

On paper it seems it'd be easier to conceal. I have a small frame 5'6" 140lbs 30" (+/- a gut) and even if it'd only be during the winter, the slimmer, shorter grip G19 might print less.

Though, Sig grips always won and Glock grips out of the box just don't work-- but I'm considering modifying the grip to fit.

I have both. Like them both. To me, there is not much difference. A couple of weeks ago we set up some GSSF courses to help out a buddy who was going to shoot his first GSSF match. I shot the course with both guns. My Shield scores were consistently just a little better than those shot with my Glock 19. Love them both - but slight edge in preference to my Shield

I rented the Glock 19 gen 4 the other day and I could not wait to get back to shooting the Shield. For me, the Shield is easier to shoot, better grip, less recoil and more accurate. But, that was the first time I shoot a Glock. Every time I went to buy one I ended up with another M&P. The M&P with the least amount of recoil is the compact for me.

Overall, I find 9mm recoil to be trivial.

That said, the Glock has less perceived recoil: perhaps because the contour of the double stack mag distributes the energy over a greater area than the single stack.

As mentioned prior, perceived recoil is very subjective. For instance, when I shoot my .357Sig M&P or G22 (barrel conversion, both) I feel the .357Sig is a much softer shooting gun than the .40S&W. I feel more confident with follow-up shots also.

This could be true, but I use the hogue grip so the Shield has less recoil to me. If you want very little recoil, go with the compact M&P. It is the easiest M&P to shoot for me and the most accurate.

My interest in the M&P Compact grew once I picked up my first and second Shield.

For me to get it though, would make me wish my other compacts were full size.
