Was dropping buy my LGS just to see what they had. (And I'm in the market for a .40 and they had a Beretta 96 for $465 OTD and I wanted to take a closer look at it. [It's near perfect.])

But I saw a big ole M&P Performance Center for $375 OTD. Hmmmm….

Now my only striker-fired 9 is an M&P and I really like it. So now I'm thinking of this one rather than the Beretta or a 4006TSW CHP for $385 plus another $100 for ffl, ship, and tax.

The big reason to consider the M&P is that it is a ported, Performance Center gun. It could use an Apex trigger if I want, but that's not a big deal.

But it's dirty. Touches of rust on the tops of many of the screws; filthy barrel around the ports; needs a thorough cleaning and maybe some new springs.

My question: Is this any sort of a bargain? A hot price at $375? (Non-Performance Center police surplus are available for $250 or $300 plus at least $75 tax, shipping, ffl) Or should I pass for either the Beretta or a Sig 226 for $375 plus another $100 for shipping, ffl, tax or the 4006.

I don't mind cleaning guns or replacing springs. I just like bargains and am wondering if this is one.

Personally I would go with the CHP 4006 TSW.

I own an M&P 40c and I love it, it shoots great dont get me wrong....but at the end of the day its still a polymer striker fired gun....Not exactly my favorite thing.

You didnt mention the "purpose" for the gun so Im assuming range toy and the TSW will handle the .40 better than the M&P plus you get an all steel, hammer fired gun (which I prefer hammer fired).

If you prefer polymer or it doesnt "bother" you that its polymer the M&P is a GREAT gun, I cant really argue that but Id definitely pick the TSW if I had the chance.

I also dont think the gun is really that great a price given that its .40 and older.......40cal guns are hard for shops to sell and not many people are buying them. So if you did pick the M&P I would try and get a better price.

That barrel looks well-worn, or not well-maintained, or both. Below is a recent photo of the barrel from my M&P 40c. It has over 13,000 rounds through it, and still has most of the original finish, primarily because it has been cleaned and lubed after every use. My 40c has been a superb gun, so much so that it has been my everyday carry for the past five years. Thus, I am a big fan of the M&P 40 line. For about $150 more, you can get a new M&P 40 PC, and not worry about what kinds of abuse the previous owner has heaped on it. Conversely, if you're sure that pictured 40 PC is OK mechanically, use its appearance to negotiate a lower price. I know nothing about Berettas, so I can't help you there. However, if the P226 is in equal or better condition, that would be my choice. Why? Because all-steel SIGs are cool!

I have the CORE version of the M&P Performance Center in 40 S&W with the Apex trigger and sear kit installed. It shoots really well and the ports tame the snappiness of a polymer framed 40.

I don't like guns with compensators. I would get a M&P cop trade in gun from Sportsmans Outdoor Superstore $299 in very good condition, in the box with grips and 2 magazines with no tax and free shipping. Find an FFL that only charges 10 bucks, they are fairly common around here.

Sportmans Outdoor Superstore has the M&P 2.0 .40 Compact with 3.6" barrel no thumb safety for $299 through November, or with a thumb safety for $439. At that price I might just have to buy one.

I own several M&P’s including a “Performance Center”. I wouldn’t waste my money on another one, just buy standard. The trigger on mine was a junk even after sending it back to S&W twice; they said it was okay. I had to put an Apex trigger in it before I could use it; it’s the only M&P I have that I had to do that with. My other had triggers that were usable.

Have you ever shot a ported gun? I wouldn’t want one.

I just got a new M&P 2.0 4” in .40S&W (11684) from Buds for $330. It’s still there at that price.

No. Skip the .40. It should never have been born. Higher cost, more recoil, lower capacity and it won't do anything that a 9 won't do just was well.
