Approx. 500 rounds thru this gun and the trigger started failing to reset. Have read thru the threads on the forum for this gun and find no mention of a repeatable reset problem. The striker cocks but the trigger fails.
With magazine empty, inserted and locked I can cycle the slide back, let slide go into battery and "no trigger". Drop magazine cycle slide by hand fast, slow, whatever; the trigger will sometimes reset and I can dry fire. At the firing line the trigger will fail to reset approx. half the time. Sometimes I can work the slide just enough to see the loaded round and the trigger will reset. But sometimes not.
Looking for inside on this problem before I contact S&W.
Thanks to any and all.

What ammo are you using? It sounds like the slide isn't cycling all the way back.

Alternatively, is it the safety version? Some folk have problems with their thumb bumping off the manual safety.

Third option, the grip safety isn't operating properly or your grip is relaxing without you realizing. Seems unlikely though as you say you can repeat the issue hand cycling.

One more thing. Are you trying to ride the reset or are you releasing the trigger fully. If you are riding the reset and a return spring is weak/broken, that might give you what you see.

Thanks.....
Variety of ammo, S&B, Aguila, Federal, Winchester.....It still happens.
I will look into all the suggestions
Thanks again........Oh and since I don't own another "hammerless" semi auto, I thought that if it wasn't out where I could thumb it, it was a striker. Need to educate myself.

FORGET the trigger reset! If you let the trigger ALL the way out after a shot and pull the trigger again does it fire? Make sure the safety is off and the grip safety is in. Make sure you have a GOOD grip on the gun!
If you do all the above and it goes bang every time, then the gun is fine.
You are short stroking the trigger.
I mean no offense in any way! There have been too many people fall for the “Reset on a trigger” adds and sales pitches by gun gurus and gun manufactures. If you are not a special ops person who shoots thousands of rounds a year and practices using the trigger reset, then You could get Yourself killed in a self defense situation! Let the trigger Go ALL the way out!

LVSteve has a good point in that you could have a weak return spring if the trigger is not acting properly.
You can check the trigger function when the gun is disassembled. BE SURE!!! to let the hammer go forward Easily with your finger on it and recock the hammer Manually before you reassemble the gun! Check to be sure nothing is interfering with the trigger mechanism! Powder, dirt, lint etc.

In all my years of training, State and Federal qualifications using the trigger Reset has NEVER been mentioned. I have however seen people fail a section of qualifications because they did not let the trigger all the way out and the Range Officer had to tell them to do that.
In a self defense situation ((Under stress)) that last only a few seconds you don’t want the Gun not to go bang when you pull the trigger!

Be SAFE and Shoot Often!
