Hi, I'm considering buying a M&P 2.0 9mm compact with thumb safety. I've owned many S&W's over the years, but this would be the first striker fired. Regarding the safety of it all, how safe is it if it is dropped on the muzzle? Is the striker absolutely prevented from going forward and firing if the gun is dropped on the muzzle?
TIA

Very safe.

The trigger is connected to a transfer bar that has a loop that trips the sear. Also on that trigger bar is a ramp that lifts the striker block that allows the striker to travel all the way forward and ignite the primer. The trigger has the split design that prevents it from moving rearward unless a finger-like shape is doing the pulling.

As long as there is no finger (or analog) defeating the trigger, and the trigger being pulled to lift the striker block and the sear being tripped to release the striker, you're good.

*** EDIT ***

Here's a great graphic showing the trigger pull in action. Note all the parts above moving in concert with the trigger being pulled; none of it is possible without that first step:

Here where I live, the Oregon State Police are running M&P 2.0s. That's all the endorsement I need. Besides the M&P has been around for 16 years now. I think it's pretty well ironed out.

I carry a couple of different M&P pistols IWB with a round chambered, without the thumb safety. I don't feel uncomfortable with them at all. I bought my first one, a full size 9mm 2.0 with the thumb safety but after a while I got the frame plugs and removed it. None of the rest of my M&P's were purchased with the safety.

Many people are more comfortable with that added layer of the thumb safety, I get that and would never discourage anybody from making that choice. If you're one who would prefer it, by all means go for it.

As derek45auto explained.
It is called "striker block plunger" - it prevents striker to be moved forward without pressing the trigger.
So , YES - "the striker is absolutely prevented from going forward and firing if the gun is dropped on the muzzle"

The trigger safety is very good in preventing accidental discharge due to dropping, etc.

The manual safety is very good in preventing accidental discharge due to inadvertent trigger pull (whether by finger or otherwise).

Neither one does the job of the other.
