A few days ago I bought a new 4.0 10mm. 051822 is on the box's label, so I assume it was made in May-2022. I guess that is my problem. It was shipped before any improvements were implemented? Maybe the 4" model with thumb safety doesn't sell as quickly? I bought it from my largest LGS. Serial number starts with NMH4....

Removed factory lubed and cleaned it up. Took it to range next day. Only had Sellier & Beliot 180gr FMJ. Out of habit, I loaded just 5 rds. Bang, Bang, Bang-Jam. It's the FTF on next to last rd. I had not read of that issue yet. Saw @2000Z-71 post after I discovered my issue.

With the next several loadings, I went with the full 15+1. Shot about 130 more rds. 130/16 is roughly 8 mags. Out of those next 8 loadings, I had a FTF two times. Once with each mag. So, out of 9 total loadings, 3 FTFs on the next to last round. At least I can get off 13 rounds. ;)

I have on order the Springer magazine spring P/N SP0436 which is for the 10mm model. I figured I better opt for that than the SP0168 I have seen referenced. I think that is what people bought before the 10mm specific spring was released. ???

I saw where user @DAVE401 stated his fix with sandpaper on the edge of the mag that holds the round in place - increase the friction, so the round doesn't slide forward as easily with recoil.

If the new mag springs do not cure this, and I do the sandpaper trick, if I ever send it back to S&W, will they have an issue with the sandpaper trick?

Any other comments/suggestions are welcome. If in fact a May-2022 date is before S&W started implementing improvements, is there a chance if I ask for a new recoil spring they would send me one? I know I have read where owners got their pistol back and the repair order only mentioned smoothing the feedramp and something else, but they could tell without a doubt the recoil spring was stronger. I just hate the idea of shipping a pistol to them. Scared of theft...

Aside from this FTF issue, I absolutely love it. I carry a 2013 Shield 40, but I want this higher capacity model to carry when I am able to carry something larger. Ever since I got a Model 610 after Christmas, I have known I'd eventually get a 10 mm semi. I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone. Get a 10 mm and make it a carry piece, too.

I know I only had S&B 180 grain ammo, but the recoil was really tame. It just felt great and fired great, minus those next to last rd FTF's. I have a few different SD rounds on order. Hope to see how they perform once I get reliable function with FMJs.

There are a few Threads in this section of the Forum that pertain to F2F and magazine issues with the M&P 10mm 2.0. It seems that most of the issues occur with the 4" bbl model, and there are quite a few fixes that Forum members have tried. There are also some "not so glowing remarks" about S&W's Customer Service and Repairs when they had to send their pistols back to the mothership. With that said, I own a 4.6" bbl 10mm 2.0, and have had absolutely zero issues with it or the magazines (500+ rounds). I purchased mine in Sept. 2022, so maybe S&W made some changes by then based on feedback. I've also only used Federal Syntech Range 205 gr, Federal 180 FMJ, Sig 180 gr., and Sig Elite V-Crown JHPs. Good luck!

Thank you! I have searched and read those threads. I hope the mag springs on order will be all I need. I'll post an update when possible. Your setup looks great in those photos!

I bought a Smith and Wesson M&P 4 inch 10 mm in February 2023 and it has been outstanding in every way. Very accurate and perfectly reliable but I have shot mostly Sig 180 grain ammo at 1250 ft./s. I heard the S&B ammo and the Underwood 220 grain ammo have a bulge on the bullet that hits the magazine catch. I would try the Sig ammo for a while and see if you have good luck with that.

It amazes me when people buy a new gun (any brand) have issues and then want to guess at what is wrong and start making modifications
First thing to do is contact S&W and see what they say???

Even though SB makes great ammo, I would try several brands first. Yes ammo is expensive but so is everything else. I reload so it's not that big a deal to me.

I've read where other people changed mag springs, and it fixed this issue, so I am trying that first. I've read where others have sent theirs back to S&W and got a run around. I did ask if anyone thought (IOW, knew from experience) the chance of S&W sending me a new recoil spring if I asked for one given the manufacturing date of my pistol. If I knew for a fact that they have done that for others, I would be more likely to get them to do that for me. That worked on a Jeep issue I had when I called their 800#. To the tune of getting a free extended warranty for my many troubles on a brand-new vehicle that otherwise would have cost me $3,200...

Thanks for the ammo advice. I just ordered some Magtech FMJ.

All it costs you is a phone call to find out.
I have never had a issue with CS and have sent far to many guns back to them. They used to be the best but can not compete with Ruger, Ruger is amazing at CS

Back in the olden day's ... you were supposed to shoot about 500 rounds through a new semi-auto to "break it in " ... this might still be advisable .
I wouldn't panic just yet or start throwing money on modifications just yet .
Also trying different ammo during break-in will let you find out what the gun likes and dislikes .
If you want a free part , call and ask nicely... if you get a no ... call later and ask a different person ... I did this untill I got a yes ...but I was nice to everyone ... You never know till you ask !

That is good to know about Ruger. Refreshingly good. :)

Thank you. That is good to know! That might work for me. I am finding out too late in life I am 'too nice.' I guess I'll put that trait to good use.

More ammo arrives tomorrow, and maybe the Springer mag springs, too. I'll put some more ammo through it and see how it goes. It shoots so well, even with this next to last round hiccup, I love it.

Look on the bright side, if you haven’t solved your problem in 13 rounds, you’re probably already dead.

Seriously, I bought the 4.6” model and my experiences mirror Hawg Rider’s. I haven’t shot much over 100 rounds but no problems at all so far.

Dead or running!

Glad to hear your 4.6 is shooting well!

I got back to the range Sunday. I kept one mag stock and put the Springer #SP0436 spring in the other mag. Since the issue was with the next to last round, with the exception of a few full 15 round loadings, I kept loading 5 rounds at a time.

Previously, I had 3 FTF in about 9 loadings.

Sunday with the stock mag I ran:

5 x 5 rounds of S&B 180 gr FMJ without issue.
5, 15, 5 rounds of S&B 180 gr JHP without issue.
4 x 5 rounds of Magtech 180 gr FMJ without issue.
4 x 5 rounds of PPU 180 gr JHP without issue.
But when I went back to Magtech, I had a FTF on the last round in the mag. I ran two more 5 round loadings through it that were OK.

In total, that was 19 loadings with one FTF. 18 x 5 rounds + 1 x 15 rounds. 105 rounds total.

With the Springer sprung mag, I had no FTFs at all.

5 x 5 rounds of S&B 180 gr FMJ
5, 15, 5 rounds of S&B 180 gr JHP
5, 5, 5, 15 rounds of Magtech 180 gr FMJ
5, 15 Hornady 155 gr JHP
5, 15 PPU 180 gr JHP
7 x 5 Magtech 180 gr FMJ

23 loadings, 155 total rounds without issue. Much better!

I read somewhere here (I think) that some using the Springer springs could only load 13 and 14 rounds. Maybe that was the SP0168(?) P/N that is for .40S&W. I had no issue at all loading 15 rounds into the mag with the Springer 10mm specific spring (SP0436).

EDIT:
Out of curiosity, when the Springer SP0436 springs arrived, I measured one before and after being cycled.

Brand new it was 8.5".

The S&W springs that had been used at the range once and had been loaded full 4-5 times each measured 6.5".

I loaded and unloaded the mag with the Springer spring 5 times and remeasured the spring. It was now 7.5".

After Sunday's shooting, where the S&W spring was cycled 18 times with 5 rds and once with 15, and the Springer spring was cycled 18 times with 5 rds and 4 times with 15, neither spring changed in length.

EDIT #2:

I sure love this thing. I hope my next outing is as good as this one or better. The Magtech 180 gr may have felt a bit stouter than the S&B 180 gr, but one thing that was clearly different was the muzzle blast. Every Magtech round put out a flame that would make 357 Magnum proud!
