Swappable DPMS barrel?

Hey Gang -

Since the M&P10 is of the DPMS configuration, does that mean you can replace the barrel with any 308 DPMS barrel?

Like this one?

The rifle appears to have a lot of value, but I may want to replace the pencil barrel at some point.

And can I also just swap in a DPMS upper?

Short answer is no. The barrel uses DPMS thread but the barrel extension and bolt are not DPMS compatible. A gunsmith may be able to put the S&W barrel extension on the barrel of your choice though. The receivers are also proprietary so a DPMS upper will not work.

You're welcome. This barrel is a good one so you shouldn't have to worry about changing it too soon. My M&P has been shooting consistent moa or better groups with good ammo and handloads. With the melonite treatment is should be long lasting.

Is it indeed a Melonite treatment? Cool. I haven't read that anywhere.

I haven't found any S&W published specs that mention melonite either.

Here is the answer to the question I asked on another forum from a S&W Rep:

"Hi, The barrel does have a durable corrosion resistant coating inside and out. (Nitride/Melonite type coating.) We have found in our testing the this process is better than chrome lining, and offer protection internally and externally, and has better barrel life. The Barrel also features 5R rifling for decreased fouling and better accuracy. The M&P10 is compatible with the DPMS Lo-profile compatible rails. (Please be aware there are several types of so called "standards" for .308 AR rails. (Armalite, DPMS hi-profile, DPSM lo-profile )) Some manufacturers label them a such, and some don't offer all three heights. (This is mainly an upper receiver height difference and barrel threading.) The barrel threading of the M&P10 is compatible with the DPMS barrel threading. The two most popular .308 rail systems are from Troy or Daniels Defense. (See links below.)

And I read it somewhere else but can't remember where at the moment. My barrel does indeed seem to be coated inside and out and cleans very easy.
